What Is A Christian?

Sam Crabtree

Pastor for Care

A twenty year old woman recently asked me that question. How would you answer? She asked a good question, because the Bible itself exhorts us to ask ourselves if WE are Christians. Are you a Christian?

Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves…unless indeed you fail to meet the test (2 Corinthians 13:5).

Because she asked, I have compiled 73 answers (so far) and collected them in the notebook pictured above. I have been mailing her one answer a day for her reflection and self-examination. Here are some selected answers from among the seventy-three answers.

  • 2. A Christian is trusting in Jesus Christ alone for the forgiveness of sins and the fulfillment of all God’s promises, including eternal life. Is it her intention to follow Jesus as her Lord and obey his teachings for the rest of her life?
  • 13. A Christian loves Jesus.
  • 17. A true Christian demonstrates faith through repentance and growing behavior patterns of obedience to Christ viewed as evidentiary fruit rather than means to earn salvation.
  • 18. Christian hearts have eyes. “A Christian is someone who has been spiritually awakened to see Christ as their supreme treasure and, in that realization, gladly embraces him.” - John Piper
  • 38. A Christian welcomes and receives Jesus as comely and attractive, preferring him to other loves.
  • 39. By faith a Christian receives (looks to) Christ Jesus as a propitiation (appeasing the wrath of someone powerful, i.e., God) by his blood.
  • 40. So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples” (John 8:31).
  • 44. A Christian treasures Jesus above all things and will gladly count all things as loss to know him more.
  • 49. A Christian is one who knows he has offended God, knows his offense produces an infinite debt, and knows he cannot pay this debt and therefore cannot save himself from the judgment to come, but… sees and graciously accepts the help of the One who can.
  • 51. A Christian surrenders to Jesus the keys to every room of his house/life, the steering wheel of his life, his calendar, his money, his time, his tongue, his relationships, his career, the passwords to his secrets, and the focus of his thoughts.
  • 52. A Christian is one who finds happiness in God, and pursues more happiness in him, confident he will find it in him.
  • 64. A Christian cannot NOT see the glory of Christ.
  • 65. A Christian doesn’t drift away from the message of salvation accomplished by Jesus on the cross. “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by the angels proved to be reliable… (What message? Luke 2:11 - “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord!”)…and every transgression or disobedience…(of every Christian)…received a just retribution…(the punishment of Jesus on the cross)…how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation" (Hebrews 2:1)?
  • 69. A Christian is dramatically unlike the perishing. "Those who are perishing refuse to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness" (2 Thessalonians 2:10). A Christian doesn’t refuse to love the truth.
