Identifying Evidences of Grace

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
I can easily identify areas for improvement in myself and those close to me. I am often my own worst critic, and I can quickly point out others’ weaknesses. As you can imagine, this is not always welcome. Some may call this a growth mindset or high conscientiousness; to others, it's a downer and a bit annoying. I wonder if any of you can relate to me.
Fifteen years ago, someone introduced me to the idea of “evidences of grace.” We were in a small group together, and we would take the opportunity, on someone’s birthday, to point out several evidences of grace that God was producing in them. The primary verse this friend pointed to was 1 Corinthians 1:4, “I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus.”
If you know about the Corinthian church, you’ll recall that they had some major problems. There was division, jealousy, and infighting: “‘I follow Paul,’ and another, ‘I follow Apollos’” (1 Cor 3:4). There was ungodly boasting and pride (1 Cor 4:6–7). There was sexual immorality present in the church (1 Cor 5:1). They humiliated the poor when observing the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor 11:17–22). Despite knowing all these problems, Paul begins his letter: “I give thanks to my God always for you.”
That is remarkable! I want to be more like Paul in this regard. I want to be quick to see God’s grace at work in others, in Christ’s church, in my family, and even in myself. Sure, there is always room for improvement, and we will forever fall short of perfection in this earthly life. Yet there is real grace at work in and through faith-filled believers, producing fruit to the glory of God.
So let me encourage you to take a moment sometime this week to reflect on how God has been at work in and through you and those around you. For example, consider the following questions:
- What is one difficulty or struggle where God has met you?
- What is one sin struggle that is less prominent today than a year ago?
- How has God’s word and spirit spoken to you recently?
- In what area do you feel more hopeful today than you did months ago?
- What is one way you have seen God’s shepherding care?
If I reflect on the past nine years that I have been at The North Church (and formerly the North Campus), I have seen God grow us to be more steadfast and immovable in him. I have seen him help us to speak the truth in love, with candor and gentleness. I have seen him produce in us unity, harmony, and like-mindedness, even when we disagree. We have increasingly become a warm, welcoming community for outsiders. And I see a great and increasing evangelistic zeal for the lost. Praise God for his grace in and through us.
How have you seen the Lord working in you, your family, your community, and in our world? And as we give thanks to God for his many gifts of grace, may we pray all the more. Ask for more of Christ. More of his grace in and through us for his glory and for our good. Join me in asking God to use this summer to refresh and renew us so that we walk by faith and are fruitful and faithful in all that we do.
Giving thanks for his grace at work in you,
Pastor Steven
