Proclaiming Christ in Worship

Dan Holst

Pastor for Worship

Worship

For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:5–6

At The North Church we aim to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord. We believe that God is the one who is at work, shining the glorious light of the gospel of Jesus Christ into our hearts as we steadfastly fix our gaze on him.

As the pastor primarily responsible for planning and leading our corporate worship services, my aim is to always foreground the panorama of God’s manifold glory through preaching, prayers, ordinances, scriptures, and singing so that the eyes of our hearts see him afresh and our souls respond accordingly. Why? Paul gives us his answer in 1 Corinthians 3:18: “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” Transformation is the result of looking, and looking, and looking at him.

For more than two decades it has been my joy to partner with hundreds of you - leaders in music and worship - to function as servants for Jesus’ sake. The very essence of what we do is point away from ourselves and direct attention to the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Some of you are newer to The North Church and to you I say, “Welcome. We’re glad you’re here!” Each week we publish information on Sunday’s sermon text to read in advance. We also provide you with the order of worship (a kind of roadmap for each Sunday’s service) and Spotify playlists for familiarization of the songs we’ll sing each week. I encourage you to listen and sing along before you arrive on Sunday morning.

Additionally, some of you have been gifted by the Lord to join us in leading music and worship. We rely on singers to serve in our Worship Choir and instrumentalists to fill out the sections of our North Church Orchestra. Kindergarten through 12th grade choirs also rehearse and serve regularly. Our goal for these Youth Choirs is to create space within the church for students to grow in musical literacy, vocal confidence and maturity, making biblical worship a priority. Further info on all of these ensembles can be found on The North Church Worship page.

Finally, if you are a Kindergarten through 12th grade choir family or you are an instrumentalist or vocalist here at The North Church, we'd like to invite you to the Worship Ministries Kickoff event THIS Sunday, August 30, at 10:30am in The North Church Chapel (D500-504). In addition to snacks you can savor, we'll cover scheduling, registration and some exciting anticipated worship ministries changes in the upcoming school year. Join us!
