Did God Actually Say?

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
Now that our Wednesday Connection gatherings have concluded for the year, it means that Summer Wednesday Connection is around the corner. For many old-timers, this is a welcome tradition (going on 20+ years). For many others who are newer to the church, this may be unfamiliar.
Nearly every Wednesday in June through August, we’ll plan to gather at Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton at the picnic pavilion. This is a casual midweek gathering for a shared meal, worship, teaching, and fellowship together as a church family. It’s also a great opportunity to invite friends, neighbors, or guests to meet some folks before joining us on a Sunday.
Parking can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early. Many also bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets to spread out on the grass, as picnic tables are limited. A simple dinner is served at 5:30 pm, worship begins at 6:15 pm, followed by a 15-minute teaching from the Bible, and then extended fellowship until dusk. For those with allergies or dietary restrictions, you may want to pack your own dinner.
Our teaching theme this year is “Did God Actually Say?” The phrase comes from Genesis 3, where the crafty serpent questions Eve about what God actually said. His question doubts God’s goodness and leads Adam and Eve to disobey God and eat of the forbidden fruit.
Each week, designated teachers will seek to unmask and expose common cultural slogans that are contrary to God’s word. They’ll help us to see why these counterfeits seem compelling, but how God’s word ultimately reveals a better truth. The goal is to help us think more biblically and combat the lies that we are bombarded with regularly in our world. I hope that it equips us with a verse or two to expose the lies and to remind us of God’s promises.
For example, here are some common slogans or ideas that we’ll seek to address:
You can be whatever you want.
Follow your heart.
There is no such thing as truth.
Authority is inherently bad.
Love is love.
This won’t be highly philosophical or sophisticated, as we’ll seek to make it so that children can benefit from the teaching as well. In addition to the teaching, we’ll also have a few family-friendly activities for children, the playground and Gaga Ball pit are well utilized, and pick-up frisbee or soccer games pop up as well.
If you’ve never come, let me encourage you to come at least once this summer. Plan to stick around for the evening so you can meet some new people and make some new friends. While it may be intimidating if you’re new, we hope this can be a more unhurried environment where you can connect with others within the church.
Lastly, we will not gather at the park on August 5. We encourage families and individuals to prayerfully consider hosting or participating in a neighborhood gathering on Tuesday, August 4, which is typically Nite to Unite or National Night Out (depending on your county). We’d love it if hundreds of us got to know our neighbors and local communities with the aim of love, friendship, and open doors for the gospel.
Eager to gather with you all,
Pastor Steven
