A Reminder and Notes for Fall

The Sovereignty of God

Hope

Dear North Church,

Several weeks ago, I preached a message titled “God or Caesar?” from Matthew 22:15–22. If you missed it, I invite you to watch it. One application from that sermon was “remember God is sovereign over all.” This is an important and comforting word no matter our current circumstances. Whether you are experiencing troubles, trials, sufferings, or joys, God is good and with his people.

The government has limited authority over a restricted sphere, but God has unlimited authority over an unrestricted sphere. He is, right now, upholding our bodies and breath. This is a comforting word because it’s easy to lose sight of his goodness when we experience trials or suffering.

Yet the Psalmist reminds us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth give way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea” (Ps 46:1–2). We don’t need to fear, even when disaster strikes—like the mountains being drowned in the sea—because God is still seated on his throne. He reminds us that he is trustworthy, faithful, and working all things together for our good (Rom 8:28).

So take heart this week. As many of us begin another school year, and all the busyness that comes with it, we remember that God is actively drawing us closer to him, inviting us to trust him, and that he will never leave us or forsake us.

‍Notes for Fall Launch

‍As we move towards Fall, I have a few notes for us. First, join us in welcoming newcomers and visitors to The North Church. I often talk about the “warmth and welcome” of our church, which is only possible when we make meaningful connections with others.

A good problem we have is that we are growing. We have more and more visitors and newcomers every week. We had over 1500 people this past Sunday and over 700 at our final summer Wednesday in the park. The handful of designated welcomers can’t possibly greet and connect with every visitor who walks through our doors.

Would you make it your mission to greet and welcome at least one new individual or family each week? If they’re new, can you help connect them or show them around (e.g., children’s wing, Sunday school classes, Discover The North Church class, or welcome area). If they’re not new, make a new connection with someone in our church family.

These next several weeks will feel like an “all hands on deck” time as we greet folks, welcome visitors, and make meaningful connections with guests. Also, pray that many come to saving faith in Jesus. We regularly have unbelievers among us who are seeking truth and longing to be known by others.S

econd, Pastor Andrew has listed the remaining needs in our children’s classrooms on Sunday and Wednesday below. Would you prayerfully consider serving in one of these settings if you’re not serving anywhere already? We would love for several others to join us in discipling the next generation so that they will be oaks of righteousness in the decades to come. It is a joy and privilege to invest our time and energy in helping our children and youth love and know Jesus. Send Pastor Andrew a note if you’re at all interested or curious.I look forward to gathering once again this week as we look to the launch of all of our Fall ministries.

With affection in Christ,

‍Pastor Steven
