An Invitation to Pray for Our Youth

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

If you didn’t know, we have a lot of children and youth at The North Church. We have crunched the numbers, and it is no exaggeration that our Sunday and Wednesday ministries impact about 700 children and youth (infants through 18-year-olds). Most Sundays, we announce the birth of yet another baby. Every Wednesday and Sunday, nearly every square inch of our building is full of children.

This is a blessing and a gift to steward. Please pray for our children and youth. Unfortunately, they are growing up in a world that seems much more dangerous, threatening, and wicked than the one many of us grew up in.

A war is being waged for children’s hearts and minds. Children are constantly being discipled by phones, algorithms, entertainment, social media, peers, and advertising. The recent news story about the Cornell case suggests our world’s view of sexuality is deeply broken. Pornography, sexualized social media, and confusion over sex and gender undermine God’s good design. We live in a therapeutic age where feelings trump the truth.

In addition, we know that “the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). We are living in a “crooked and twisted generation” (Phil 2:15). Just this week, I read several shocking news stories. One such story is an 18-year-old who plotted an ISIS-inspired attack at the Mall of America, seeking to kill dozens of people. Thankfully, the FBI stopped his plan. There have been several other gang-related shootings as well. In the midst of this, we may be tempted to fear, lash out in anger, or grow despondent over the state of the world.

Yet, let me encourage you to channel your energies into praying for God to do far more than we can ask or imagine among this next generation of young people.

‍Pray for our children to know and love Jesus and walk closely with him.
Pray for our children to have identities rooted and grounded in Christ.
Pray for our children to be guarded from sexual sin, pornography, and abuse.
Pray for our children to discern lies from truth.
Pray for our children to see marriage and children as good gifts from God.

‍In particular, would you pray for the 219 middle and high school students who will attend our Awaken retreat this weekend (Friday through Sunday). Pastors Ben, Jon, and Dan have been hard at work, along with dozens of others (such as Millie Roberts). Pray for Professor Jared Compton as he teaches our students. Sixteen families will be opening their homes to host. Dozens of counselors will be assisting. Pray for some to be saved. Pray for sweet times of fellowship, fun, and opening up. Pray for the transportation, volunteers, students, and helpers. There are dozens of details, and yet, ask God to use this to draw students closer to him.

With eager expectation,

‍Pastor Steven
