Attention Economy and Calendar Highlights

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
We live in an attention economy. This means that digital platforms—news media, social media, advertisers, companies, etc.—all want your attention. Social media feeds never end. Videos play one after another. Push notifications on your phone pull your attention hundreds of times a day.
On every fast-food receipt, you’re prompted to take a survey about their service. After you go to the doctor, you get an email asking, “How did we do?” After talking to the electric or gas company on the phone, you’re prompted, “Would you like to stay on the line for a short survey?” Every interaction seems to come with a questionnaire.
What do we do when we are constantly bombarded at all times?
Psalm 46:10 reminds us: “Be still, and know that I am God.” The most important thing we can do today is not check off a dozen boxes on our to-do list. It’s not replying to emails or texts. It’s not even keeping up with the news or latest events. It’s stopping long enough to remember that God is real, he is our heavenly Father, and he longs for us to carry out all of our work with a conscious acknowledgment that he is present and at work in and through us for his glory.
So when we are tempted to feel divided by a dozen or more concerns, take a moment to stop, slow down, and be still before the Lord. Give thanks for life, breath, and new mercies each morning. See his gracious hand in your life. And ask him for help: “Lord, help me to prioritize rightly, work diligently, and to say ‘no’ to the things that don’t need to be done.” Entrust to him the things beyond our control and faithfully carry out the things within our responsibility.
Jesus reminds us: “Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matt 6:34).
Several Upcoming Calendar Highlights
Below are several highlights and reminders—not to make you anxious—but to help you prioritize and be prepared.
- Bethlehem College and Seminary Focus Weekend on Sunday, October 18 – I have invited seminarian Nate Cordano to preach that morning to highlight our ongoing partnership with the school.
- Global Focus on October 25–November 1 – We will consider God’s work among the nations and in global missions. Pastor Nick will preach Sunday, October 25, and we have a guest speaker, Brooks Buser, former missionary and president of Radius International, on Sunday, November 1. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 28, for our Global Focus Connection.
- Pastor John Piper Preaching on November 8 – I have invited Pastor John Piper, pastor emeritus of Bethlehem Baptist Church, to preach that weekend. Coinciding with that, The North Institute will host a seminar on Christian Hedonism on November 6–7 with various speakers from The North Church.
- Thanksgiving Eve Service on November 25 – We hope you’ll join us again on Wednesday, November 25, for our Thanksgiving Eve service where we will celebrate God’s goodness in worship, a devotional word, testimonies, and open mic time for sharing about God’s grace, and a pie social and fellowship afterwards.
Eager to gather together once again this Sunday to sit under God’s word and to love one another as his people. I hope you will come eager to see more of Christ.
In Christ,
Pastor Steven
