The Lord’s Victory at Summer Camp

Ben Katterson

Pastor for Middle School & Families

North Family,

Each June the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders go away for Middle School Summer Camp. We spend Sunday through Friday morning playing games, worshipping Jesus and studying his word. It is kind of like the “desolate place” that Jesus refers to in Mark 6:31. In Mark 1:35 Jesus himself retreated to a desolate place to commune with his Father. We seek to follow his wonderful example.

This year 85 campers came. The theme was God is Faithful to His Word. Pastor Jon Nowlin taught us from the book of Joshua. Seven adult leaders came to be cabin counselors and 18 high school students served as assistant counselors.

The elements at camp that weave a meaningful, often significant, week are a multitude. Let me explain: The location is a camp by a lake with trees and fields, away from the frenetic hustle and bustle of life. The staff, both high schoolers and adults, are intentionally recruited and eagerly serve, looking for any and every opportunity to leverage moments that God has provided in order to open the Kingdom of Heaven to these campers. The agenda we set is crafted to maximize every minute for God’s glory. The word is proclaimed in a manner fit for adolescent hearts and exalts God through clear exposition. All of this forms a grand conspiracy for the eternal joy of these campers. But there are two other things at play.

Unbeknownst to them, the campers themselves are part of this strategic opportunity. Notice that the only camp that The North Church coordinates is for Middle School students. These adolescent students are at a point in life when adulthood is dawning in their lives and maturation sprouts tiny buds. At this point in their lives, more than ever before, they are asking like the young man in Deuteronomy 6:20, “What is the meaning…?” They are transforming before our eyes, in the hands of the master builder, into young adults with a greater understanding of the world and appreciation for what is amazing. And just at this point we can direct their eyes and ears and hearts to the most amazing thing that ever was or is (or will be).

But one other person loves to come to camp. Time and again, year after year, to the joy of campers and staff alike, Jesus loves to come and walk among us and dwell with us at camp. Our efforts would be in vain without him. All of our plans would fall flat. The “horse” of camp is made ready, but we know all too well that “victory belongs to the LORD” (Proverbs 21:31). We pray fervently and frequently that he would be among us. I watch him touch campers' hearts as they read his word while sitting under a shade tree. I see students raise hands to honor him as they sing his praises. I see them rejoicing in tears, receiving his forgiveness for their sins. They taste and see that he is good as they splash and play in the lake. He opens their minds to know him and his ways as they study in small groups.

And we know that so many of you pray. Thank you. Thank you for a brief word to Jesus, here and there throughout your day on behalf of these students. Thank you for wrestling with us against the rulers and powers and authorities that are at these kids’ throats. Fruit from our week of Middle School Camp is already discernible. We pray that it will grow, multiply, and remain. May Jesus be pleased to shape these young people to be branches abiding in the vine, oaks of righteousness, his planting, for his glory.
