Shifting Into Summer Rhythms

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

As Ecclesiastes reminds us, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven” (Ecc 3:1). There is a time for hibernating in the cold months of winter and a time for being outdoors, hiking the trails, and enjoying the lake. As we transition into our summer rhythms, I want to remind, encourage, and inform you about a number of topics.

Summer Wednesday Connection | For those of you newer to The North Church, we hope you’ll consider joining us at Long Lake Regional Park. We will gather nearly every Wednesday evening this summer (except August 5) for a meal, worship, teaching, and extended fellowship into the evening. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and enjoy time with other folks from The North Church. For the old-timers, be on the lookout for new folks joining us for the first time.

Neighborhood Night Out | As mentioned earlier, the only Wednesday we won’t gather at the park is August 5, to make space in your schedule to participate in or host a neighborhood gathering on Tuesday, August 4, for Neighborhood Night Out or Nite to Unite. This is a national evening to meet neighbors, host a block party, and interact with first responders in your local city. Prayerfully consider how you might get to know your neighbors with their eternal good in mind.

Summer Sunday Schedule | Starting this Sunday, we will not have any Sunday school classes (nursery for infants through age 3 will still be provided at 9 and 11am). In light of that, we invite families to worship together in our services. For little ones who may find it difficult to sit through the service, we encourage you to plan ahead with a few resources (e.g., picture book, crayons, notebook, snacks, etc.). We’ll also have sermon sheets available in the kids’ hallway for children to take notes. For more on why we do this and tips to help, refer back to my April 17 email.

Preaching Schedule | Providentially, Pastor Jon Nowlin will be preaching on “Let the little children come to me” from Matthew 19:13–15. Parents, prepare your children to hear a word from the Lord (and for adults as well)! This summer, we will continue in our Matthew series. Here are some of the upcoming passages and preachers:

  • May 24 – Jon Nowlin on Matthew 19:13–15
  • May 31 – Joshua Greever on Matthew 19:16–30
  • June 7 – Guest preacher Jared Compton on Matthew 20:1–16
  • June 14 – Andrew Cagle on Ephesians 4:11–16
  • June 21 – Josh Bremerman on Matthew 20:17–28
  • June 28 – Steven Lee on Matthew 20:29–34

Some may be thinking, “Is Pastor Steven going on vacation?” Not quite; we’ll mostly be around. I love preaching and working through Matthew’s Gospel together. Yet I also love hearing my fellow pastors preach, and I also need to sit under God’s word for my soul’s edification. This break from the pulpit will allow me to attend to other matters at the church. I know these preachers will serve us well from God’s word.

Global Partners on Home Assignment | Summer is also a time when many of our global partners are on home assignment, renewing visas, connecting with partners, or visiting children. Keep an eye out for returning missionaries. Welcome them, ask about ministry, and pray for the advance of the gospel. Here are the global partners who will be back at various points this summer: Steve & Lindsay Discher, Tim & Amy Moline, Craig & Tracy Sorley, Allan & Daylinda Badayos, Dan & Louise Hubert, Dave & Laurie Roberts, Jon & Carrie D, Amanda Ferris, and Dustin & Kellie S.

Lastly, let’s continue gathering together with God’s people under his word for the upbuilding of our souls. If you’re traveling or away on Sundays, we hope you’ll worship with other brothers and sisters wherever you are and keep up with our Matthew series through our sermons page or by subscribing to “The North Church - Sermons” podcast on your phone’s podcast app.

Eager to gather this Sunday,

Pastor Steven
