Praising God for Carmen and Our Children

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
Can you imagine caring for an infant child, but they never grow up and remain a baby forever? For some, this sounds terribly exhausting—who would want never-ending diapers and sleepless nights? For others, it sounds delightful—those chubby cheeks and infant squeals that go on endlessly. Yet, this is not an imaginary scenario, but a lifelong calling to care for the little ones and the least of these among us.
Last week, I mentioned the joy and opportunity we have to verbalize “evidences of grace” that we see at work in those around us. I want to take this opportunity to recognize Carmen Tomaszewski’s 25th year on staff as our nursery coordinator.
Carmen and her husband previously served as missionaries in South Africa. Some time after returning, Carmen began serving to oversee our nursery ministries at Bethlehem, first at the North Campus when it met at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, then in our current building, and finally at The North Church. She has been a stalwart in overseeing and leading the charge in caring for, welcoming, and praying for the babies in our nurseries. She has helped us put Jesus’ words into practice: “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 19:14).
As of July 2006, when her records begin, Carmen has written letters welcoming a total of 786 babies. The largest number of babies in any one year was 61 in 2011. I praise God for using Carmen to staff and lead our nurseries. This is not just childcare; these volunteers are praying over our children and teaching them songs, verses, and Bible stories. These volunteers welcome children and bring them to Jesus. Our aim is that they would grow and look back and say, “There was never a time I didn’t know that God is big and good.” Additionally, we hope this ministry frees many weary parents to worship and to be renewed as they embark on discipling the next generation.
So I praise God for Carmen Tomaszewski’s 25 years of faithful service in our nurseries. Would you join me in thanking Carmen for her labors?
As many of you know, discipling children is one of our priorities as The North Church. Satan hates the nuclear family, hates children growing up with the knowledge of God, and the world continually seeks to undermine the simple faith of children. In more recent years, many destructive ideologies have focused on leading children astray. We are engaged in a spiritual war.
With that in mind, let me encourage us to pray for the next generation. That parents would model a vibrant and living faith and prioritize the right things. That grandparents would be a positive spiritual influence upon their grandchildren. That teachers would teach and reinforce what is good, true, and right. That mentors would point young people to faith in Christ. That the hundreds of children at The North Church would grow up to be oaks of righteousness, steadfast, immovable, and always abounding in the work of the Lord (Isa 61:3; 1 Cor 15:58).
I have great hope in the next generation who will carry on this faith, because we have a great and glorious God. He is in control, he is at work in our children and youth, and he invites us to be good stewards of all that he has entrusted to us. So pray with me for the next generation to hold fast to God’s word and be trained and equipped to engage in the spiritual battle until Christ returns.
With great hope in tomorrow,
Pastor Steven
