An Encouragement to Vote!

Dear North Church,
Over this current election cycle, I have spoken with two candidates running for office. One candidate is a committed Christian who is eager to craft reasonable legislation for the common good. He has a busy full-time job outside of politics, yet he seeks to serve our community. He shared that this can be a thankless job—working full-time, then door-knocking after work, and then rinse and repeat. Yet he’s seeking reelection so he can advance good legislation or stand up against bad legislation. It was a good reminder to pray for him once again.
Several weeks ago I preached on our duties to God and Caesar from Matthew 22:15–22. Since then, several people have shared that they are praying for those who are running for office, especially as they see political signs around town. I’m so encouraged! Asking God to glorify himself in an election is never in vain and never a waste of time.
Meanwhile, I want to encourage us not only to pray, but also to vote.
I’m hoping most of us already do, but I can imagine it is discouraging at times. We may grow cynical: I get to choose between bad or less bad. We may think it’s a waste of time: good candidates never get elected anyway. We may doubt the process. While our discouragement is not unexpected, let me encourage us to hope in God even as we cast our votes.
Romans 13:1 reminds us that God establishes governmental authority to advance what is good for society. Because government is from God, we are to pray for those leaders (1 Peter 2:13–17; 1 Timothy 2:1–2). Therefore, we have responsibilities to participate in our governmental system: “Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed” (Romans 13:7).
I’m not saying you must vote, but I personally think you should vote. Take time to research the candidates, consider the issues, and vote according to your conscience and God’s word. If you need help, voter guides are available online (here is one from Minnesota Family Council).
Lastly, consider Proverbs 29:2, “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.” Pray for God to give us righteous candidates—those who will expose fraud, reject bribes, promote law and order, rule justly, use equal weights and measures, and fear God.
And however elections go, we know that Jesus is still seated at the right hand of the Father, ruling and reigning, and calling his people to glorify him in all of life.
With hope for the future,
Pastor Steven
