The Resurrection That Reorients Our Lives

Steven Lee

Dear North Church,
As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ this weekend, let me share five implications. If the resurrection never happened, there would be no good news, no celebration, no hope, and sin and death would reign. Christians would be deceived and should be pitied. This is the argument of 1 Corinthians 15.
Yet, because the resurrection is true, it transforms how we live and think. In fact, it changes everything about our lives, giving us great and unspeakable joy. So here are five resurrection realities that reorient our lives.
- The Resurrection Gives Birth to Faith and Life
First Corinthians 15:14 says, “And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” The converse of this statement is that because Christ lives, the proclamation of the gospel brings life and faith. Dead people get raised to life with words. Such is the miracle of salvation. Sharing the gospel leads to eternal life. Our labors in sharing Christ—building relationships, praying, studying the Bible, inviting others to church, and sharing our testimony and the gospel itself—are never in vain. God is using our small, faithful acts of obedience to draw the lost to himself.
- The Resurrection Makes Faithful Witness Possible
Christians are false witnesses if Christ is not raised from the dead: “We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised” (1 Cor. 15:15). Because the resurrection is true, we rightly represent God to a lost and dying world.
- The Resurrection Confirms Our Sins Are Forgiven
If the resurrection is false, then we are condemned to hell forever: “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins” (1 Cor. 15:17). Yet, the resurrection vindicates Jesus and confirms that his offering was indeed perfect and acceptable to God for the forgiveness of our sins. The resurrection confirms we are washed and cleansed of our sins.
- The Resurrection Ensures All Those in Christ Live Forever
First Corinthians 15:18 says, “Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.” Without Christ’s resurrection, there is no hope in death. The resurrection confirms that all who die in Christ will live forever with him. Jesus serves as the firstfruits, confirming that we too will rise with him (1 Cor 15:20).
- The Resurrection Makes Life Beautiful
The Christian life is meaningless if the resurrection is false: “If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied” (1 Cor. 15:19). But because the resurrection happened, we live enviable lives. Knowing Jesus Christ surpasses anything else in the universe. We can glorify God in everything we do. We get to enjoy all of his good gifts and give the Maker rightful praise. We live glorious and beautiful lives because we know who we are, what he has done, and where we and the world are headed. Rejoice that we have an eternal hope because of the resurrection.
As we gather on Good Friday and again on Easter Sunday, may wonder, awe, joy, and thanksgiving fill our hearts and minds, overwhelming us with rejoicing in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. And, be on the lookout to welcome and witness to those yet without Christ.
With joy in Christ,
Pastor Steven
