The Joy of Church Membership

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
At the Quarterly Strategy Meeting on Sunday evening, I shared the following reflections from the preamble of our Member Covenant. The preamble reads:
Based on the profession of our faith in the Lord Jesus, and having been baptized as believers, we do now joyfully enter into covenant with one another as members of The North Church. By God’s grace and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we commit to…
Let me share a few observations.
First, to be a member of Christ’s church, one must confess that Jesus is Lord. This profession is to be in word and deed. Our lives and behaviors should not contradict our confession. Romans 10:9 teaches, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Salvation comes by faith in Jesus Christ and serves as a prerequisite to church membership.
Second, members of Christ’s church must be baptized. Jesus commands his disciples to go, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matt 28:19). Peter preaches, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts 2:38). The normal pattern in the New Testament is for believers to be baptized in water by immersion. This portrays our death and resurrection with Christ, the washing away of our sins, our new birth in Christ, and our initiation into Christ’s church.
Third, we voluntarily enter into this covenant. This is an agreement we have with fellow members. We voluntarily bind ourselves to certain expectations and obligations to each other, like a man and woman getting married. We get to care for each other’s souls and uphold the church’s purity. No one pays a large sum of money to gain membership, nor can it be sold on eBay or passed down to your children. This is a joyful and voluntary agreement to care for each other in this local church, not the one down the street.
Fourth, we commit to these things by God’s grace and with the help of the Holy Spirit. We don’t exercise sheer willpower or grit, but rather seek to love others by God’s grace. The same God who saves us also sanctifies us in community with one another. The same Spirit that regenerates us is the same Spirit that enables us to love each other, forbear with one another, to forgive each other, and to be long-suffering. We get to love even the prickly people among us.
So it is a joyful privilege that we have to be part of this church family. Don’t take it for granted. Don’t neglect the goodness that God has in store for you here. God intends to use you and your fellow members to sharpen you, spur you on to love and good works, sanctify you, and grow you into the likeness of Jesus. I hope you’re on the lookout to know others, to be known by them, and to participate in the life of the church body. Don’t remain anonymous, but strive to use your gifts to serve others as an expression of our love for Christ and his body.
Praising God for you all,
Pastor Steven
