Thanksgiving Eve Service

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

Have you ever thought one of the following?

I wish I had a chance to share how God has been so faithful in these trials.

I wish I had an opportunity to publicly praise God for his blessings and grace.

I wish I had a venue to express how God’s word has ministered to my soul.

Hopefully, we all have. If we think hard enough, we will find that we have many things to thank God for. His word, his people, his Son Jesus, his grace in our lives, and the indwelling power of the Spirit. We have much to give thanks for. And Thanksgiving is a reminder that our thanksgiving is only fully consummated when we express our gratitude to others. It’s good to write thank-you cards, send a text of appreciation, or publicly give thanks to God for his many blessings.

Our attitude towards God is perhaps one of the most important things about us. Are we thankful? Or do we grumble and complain? Are we filled with awe and wonder, or bored with the things of God? Are our lips full of praise and worship, or do we use our tongues to curse and tear down?

Paul writes to Timothy that in the latter times some will depart from the faith and devote themselves to false teaching. These false teachers will forbid marriage and require abstinence from certain foods. In other words, there will always be some who think asceticism is the primary way we ought to please God. They will reduce the Christian life to what we can’t do. They will forbid good things made by God.

But Paul teaches Timothy that is not how we are to receive those gifts. Instead, they are to be “received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth” (1 Timothy 4:3). In fact, Paul writes, “For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer” (1 Timothy 4:4–5).

So with thanksgiving in view, let me encourage you to join us for our Thanksgiving Eve Service and Pie Social on Wednesday, November 26, from 6:30 to 8pm. We will gather, worship, and share testimonies of what God is doing and has done. Our theme this year comes out of Psalm 106:1, “Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”

As we prepare for the “open mic” testimony time, let me encourage you to reflect on these questions this week:

In what ways has God shown faithfulness to you or your family this year?

What is one thing God has taught you this year that you’re grateful for?

Where have you noticed God at work in your life or in the lives of others this year?

If you’re not traveling, I hope you’ll join us. We’ll also conclude our time together with a “potluck” pie social. We have about 30 pies so far, but still need an additional 60 or so! Consider signing up to bring a pie or two (store-bought or homemade) to share as we thank God for every good and perfect gift!

Lastly, we’ll begin our four weeks of Advent on November 30. This year, we’ll pause from our Matthew series and examine how Jesus fulfills the Old Testament prophecies as the Prophet, Priest, King, Lamb of God, and Savior. We’ll have our normal 9 & 11am services during the four weeks of Advent, and Christmas Eve services on December 24 at 3, 5, and 10pm.

With thanksgiving for you all,

Pastor Steven
