Singing as a Means of Grace

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

I recently talked with one of our Global Partners who ministers among Muslims overseas. He shared that he often prays for these Muslims to encounter the risen and exalted Lord Jesus Christ. He noted that it is clear that Muslims do not know the God of the Bible. He mentioned one noteworthy difference: Muslims don’t sing.

In contrast, all Christian and Christ-centered worship includes worship in song. All of our services at The North Church feature singing prominently. We want to stir our minds, hearts, and affections in worship of the Most High God. Consider all the biblical texts that call us to worship in song:

  • “Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!” (Psalm 95:1).
  • “Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day” (Psalm 96:1–2).
  • “Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” (Psalm 100:1–2).
  • “Praise the LORD! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting” (Psalm 147:1).
  • “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them” (Acts 16:25).
  • “…be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart…” (Ephesians 5:18–19).
  • “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16).

Worship in spirit and truth is one way to approach God with reverence, obey his commands, and enjoy his presence among us. We aim for our worship to glorify God, focus on the gospel of Christ, be rooted in Scripture, be marked by congregational participation and prayer, edify God’s people, and reflect undistracting excellence. We combat sin by remembering and rehearsing the gospel, exhorting one another, and celebrating what Christ has accomplished.

Pastor Josh recently encouraged small groups to make singing one key element of their gatherings. He shared two quotes. Jonathan Edwards wrote, “The best, most perfect way that we have of expressing a sweet concord of mind to each other is by music.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “The more we sing, the more joy will we derive from it.”

With this in view, I hope you come each Sunday ready and eager to use your voice to join together with all the saints to celebrate and enjoy God’s goodness, to glorify Christ, and to obey his commands.

I hope many of you will join us for our Night of Worship & Prayer on Wednesday, May 14. Dinner will be served in the gym from 4:45–6 pm. Then we’ll have a time of extended worship and prayer in the sanctuary starting at 6:15 pm. Join us in seeking the Lord and praying for his will to be done in our world for his glory.

With joy in Christ,

Pastor Steven
