Salt & Light

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Family,

Last Sunday, we studied what it means to be salt and light in our world. For many, this is a familiar passage and concept. Yet, despite its familiarity, we can also lose sight of its significance at times. We can get into a rut where we go about life, forgetting that what we believe, what we know, and how we live is profoundly different and counter-cultural.

A few weeks ago, one of our elders shared with us that he and his wife have lived in their neighborhood for more than 15 years. They have held annual Christmas gatherings for the neighbors, inviting them over for coffee and dessert, and to share the story and significance of Christmas. Like many neighborhoods, people cycle through and move away.

Yet, this past year, when one neighbor recently lost a loved one, they called this couple. They wanted them there at the funeral. Throughout the years, their faithful presence, steady witness, available ear, and welcoming smile communicated love and care. But more than that, their witness shared their faith, pointing to the hope of the gospel. In their moment of grief and sadness, they wanted Christians by their side to speak words of hope, comfort, and truth. Their years of faithful witness shined Jesus.

I know this is happening a thousandfold in and through each one of you. At work, in the neighborhood, at the gym, at the grocery store, at school, and beyond. Your faithful presence, steady witness, and willingness to point to the hope of Christ is pointing to Jesus. Join me in praying that the Lord would be pleased to save many this coming year for his glory through our collective and individual witness.

As we collectively function as the salt of the earth and shine as the light of the world, we will shine forth the light of the glory of Christ for the sake of our neighbors and the nations. Or to change the metaphor, as we continually grow as cedars of Lebanon and oaks of righteousness, we become Psalm-One-people who bear fruit in season and whose leaves don’t whither. When the winds of our world blow we will stand firm, steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord. And when hundreds of trees are clustered together, we become a garden city that gives life, shade, and respite to a weary world.

Pray for this work to abound all the more. Jesus declares, “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18).

Elder Retreat

Lastly, can you take a moment to pray for your elders? As you read this, the elders are gathered together at a retreat center in Alexandria. We hope to strengthen our teamwork, friendships, and camaraderie through extended time together. We hope to worship and pray together, seeking the Lord on behalf of The North Church. We plan to discuss our church’s mission and vision, among other things. I would be delighted if you would pray that God would meet and guide us by his Spirit. Thank you for praying for your elders and seeking God on our behalf, even as we strive to serve you with joy.

Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Steven
