Rocket Fuel for the Next Generation

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

Recently, I was in Cape Canaveral and witnessed a rocket shooting off into space. It was quite an amazing spectacle. We felt and heard the sonic boom, and the rocket disappeared into space. This required a powerful yet controlled explosion to propel the rocket through our atmosphere.

It got me thinking about the vision of The North Church. Our prayers and labors are the rocket fuel that launches the next generation to new heights. The things we do, the decisions we make, the prayers we pray, and the strategies we implement will impact generations to come. It’s like putting a small sum into a Roth IRA to enjoy compounding interest over four or five decades. We have the opportunity to set up the next generation to reap the spiritual dividends of our investment right now.

We have a constellation of opportunities before us as a church. First, we have a wealth of riches in our children. We are raising the mothers and fathers, church leaders, missionaries, entrepreneurs, and homemakers of tomorrow. We have more children than most churches have people. We have more middle schoolers than the median church size in America (~65–85 attendees).

Second, the Rice Creek Commons development is underway right across Highway 35 in Arden Hills. It is a 427-acre parcel that will be developed over the next several decades with an anticipated 3000 new residents. We have an unparalleled opportunity to be salt and light for Christ near this new development.

Third, we have opportunities to spread through church planting, sending Global Partners, and our college ministry, Campus Outreach. Fourth, we partner with other like-minded ministries to advance joy in God through big-God theology (e.g., Bethlehem Baptist Church, Bethlehem College and Seminary, the Treasuring Christ Together church planting network, and Desiring God).

What might the Lord have planned for The North Church, being adjacent to the Rice Creek Commons? What might the Lord have planned for us in giving us hundreds (~6–700) of children? What might the Lord do through our participation in spreading a big vision of God to the neighborhoods and the nations?

Here’s my ask. Let your prayers be rocket fuel for the next generation. If you’re not giving, let me invite you to invest in this kingdom work for the sake of the next generation. If you’re not serving, we have a place for you to use your gifts to edify others and build up the church. The Lord is on the move. We see amazing testimonies of salvation (note the baptisms this past week, videos linked below), increased spiritual vibrancy and joy, and eagerness to hear and study God’s word. May the Lord multiply his grace to us through our collective prayers, labors, generosity, and gifts.

In particular, join us in praying for God to bring us the right person to serve as the Pastor for Children and Families. Pray also for the 80 middle schoolers who head off to summer camp this Sunday. Pray for elder Joshua Greever as he speaks to campers from the Book of Ruth.

The future is bright because Jesus possesses all authority in heaven and on earth. He delegates that authority to the church to go and make disciples, baptizing, teaching, and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom. Jesus empowers us for this mission so that the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea (Hab 2:14). May our prayers and labors establish the foundation for the next generation to know, love, and treasure Christ all the more.

Let’s go!
