Promises Fulfilled in the Coming Christ

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
We live in an age of instant gratification. Nearly everything is “on demand.” I can order millions of products and get them delivered within 48 hours. I can run out to the store and get exactly what I want. I can pull into a drive-through to satisfy my hunger in minutes. It becomes easy to expect everything to come instantaneously.
Yet, the best things in life rarely work that way. The Thanksgiving turkey wasn’t cooked in the microwave; it took hours to defrost, brine, and roast just right. A store-bought, mass-produced pie can’t compare to the family recipe made with love and labor. Lust offers a moment, while marriage and family are built over a lifetime. You can buy something cheaply made to the lowest specifications possible, but the handcrafted piece from an artisan will have a different level of quality and beauty.
As we enter into Advent, we step into a season that is not marked by instant gratification, but anticipation, waiting, and fulfillment. God’s promises took thousands of years to unfold and be fulfilled. The arrival of Jesus was the culmination of a long season of waiting and anticipation, the climax of the story arc of redemptive history. And in that waiting, God was working, steadily unfolding his plan of redemption.
During this season, we’ll pause our Matthew series to consider how Jesus fulfills key Old Testament prophecies. These prophecies didn’t get “microwave results.” Instead, they ripened over thousands of years, through waiting, anticipating, praying, and trusting. Our Advent series invites us to experience the wonder, awe, and beauty of how Christ has come to fulfill the Scriptures for us.
As those on this side of history, we get to celebrate, enjoy, and see his power, greatness, glory, and beauty in what he has already accomplished through Jesus. And we also look forward, eagerly waiting and longing for his return, when he will make all things right once again.
Consider inviting friends or neighbors to join us over Advent. Details are available at thenorthchurch.com/christmas. Feel free to use this graphic to post to social media or to send as a text. Christmas Eve Services will be held on December 24 at 3, 5, and 10pm. These will be family-friendly services without nursery care.
Lastly, as we approach the end of the year, thank you for your continued generosity and giving to support the ministry of the church. Your giving enables us to reach our neighbors, support global partners, and serve our community. Please consider a year-end gift to help us finish well, and if you’re not yet giving regularly, we invite you to begin.
With thanksgiving,
Pastor Steven
