P.R.A.Y., Indonesia, Matthew, and Easter

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

P.R.A.Y. to Fight Sinful Anxiety

On Sunday, I shared the acronym P.R.A.Y. to combat sinful anxiety. Prayer is the primary weapon given to us in Philippians 4:6–7. According to 1 Peter 5:7, we are to cast our anxieties on God, because he cares for us. We can Present our anxieties, Recall God’s provision, Ask for our needs, and Yield to God in faith.

P – Present Our Anxieties to Our Father. Instead of trying to solve our problems in our own strength and wisdom, we first present our anxieties to our Father in heaven, remembering we have a Father who cares for our needs.

R – Recall God’s Provision and Blessings. Next, we actively recall God’s goodness and provision. We pray with thanksgiving for all he has given to us, especially the gift of Jesus Christ as our Savior (Romans 8:32).

A – Ask for What You Need. Then we ask God for whatever we need while keeping in mind the priorities of the Lord’s prayer (e.g., hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done). This is how we cast our anxieties upon the Lord.

Y – Yield to God in Faith. Lastly, we yield to God in faith, anticipating his peace and resisting the temptation to take things back into our own hands and labor according to our human wisdom. We trust the Lord to lead and guide us, taking action by faith.

On Sunday I did not have a chance to address anxiety disorders. For those who experience anxiety with underlying physiological causes, let me point you to this testimony from long-time member, Jon Morgan. He shares his story of experiencing debilitating anxiety and the use of medication to help him overcome a season of darkness.

For those interested, biblical counseling is available through the church for members and regular attendees. Fill out this form.

Request for Prayer as I Travel to Indonesia

Would you pray for me as I travel to Makassar, the capital city of South Sulawesi, Indonesia? I have been invited to be the keynote speaker at a missions conference at the Jaffray Makassar School of Theological Philosophy. I will give four messages to about 400 undergraduate and graduate students. Our Global Partners, Blake and Melody Walburg, serve at the school (Blake teaches Bible) and have invited me to come and speak.

This school was originally founded by a Canadian missionary Robert A. Jaffray in 1932. I previously shared that I have a personal appreciation for Jaffray’s ministry as he was responsible for evangelizing my great-grandfather in China (if you’re interested, you can see what I said at the Serious Joy Bethlehem Conference for Pastors in 2022).

Will you pray for the name of Jesus to be hallowed and for his kingdom to come? Pray for these students to be encouraged and exhorted to follow, love, and serve Christ in a Muslim-majority country. Also, please pray for our health and safety, as I will be accompanied by my oldest child Noelle on this trip.

Upcoming Preaching in Matthew

This Sunday, Pastor Josh Bremerman will guide us through the first section of Matthew 7:1–6, and then the following Sunday, March 30, Pastor Nick Whitehead will preach Matthew 7:7–12. They will be faithful guides as we continue our series through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.

Good Friday and Easter

Good Friday and Easter are right around the corner. Be praying about who you can invite to join us at our Good Friday Services (6 and 8 pm) and Easter Sunday services (8, 9:45, 11:30 am). Assuming the weather cooperates, we’ll also have a sunrise service at 6:10 am in the parking lot. On Easter Sunday, we’ll be in Matthew 8:1–17 and will see Jesus’ power to heal and save. Join me in praying that the Lord would work in the hearts of many this Easter season.

May his kingdom come, and his will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

With thanksgiving,

Pastor Steven
