Our Vision and Mission

Dear North Church,

Around this time of year, we chart out plans for the future. Kids take those “First Day of _____ Grade” photos with big smiles and new backpacks. Parents figure out rhythms for another school year. At work, there are new goals or targets to fulfill. The fall is a time to ramp up for the coming year.

This is also true at The North Church. Let me take a moment to share where I believe we are headed as a church.

Where Have We Been?

We are growing spiritually. We recently baptized several people, and several more are planned for September. We have welcomed new members into the church. We had 60+ people seeking to join a small group. We had a record number of women studying Romans 8 this Summer. Marriages were served through our Foundations for Marriage Class. We continue to have hundreds of children and youth engaged on both Sundays and Wednesdays. We have many signed up to participate in The North Church Institute classes on the Bible and theology.

We have a good team. I love our staff team. We have a gifted team of pastors and elders who love God and his church. We have an amazing support staff that labors behind the scenes to serve thousands. We have hundreds of volunteers who make things happen week after week. We have generous people who serve, who give sacrificially, and who are eager to see Christ exalted.

The decisions we make today will impact future generations. Like setting a small sum aside to enjoy compounding interest in a Roth IRA, we have the opportunity to set up the next generation to reap the spiritual dividends of our investment right now.

Where Are We Headed?

First, we have a wealth of riches in our children. We are raising the mothers and fathers, entrepreneurs, homemakers, and church leaders of tomorrow. We have more children than most churches have people. We have more middle schoolers than the median church size in America (~65–85 attendees). We are planting and watering so that decades from now our children will be tall and mature oaks of righteousness. Lord willing, they will have strong branches, deep roots in Christ, vibrant leaves, and bear the fruits of the Spirit. Pray that they would be steadfast and immovable.

Second, the Rice Creek Commons development is across the street. It is a 427-acre parcel that will have a similar footprint to St. Paul, Minnesota. This is an unparalleled opportunity to be in proximity to this brand-new mixed-use development. Pray that we shine the light of the glory of Christ for the sake of our neighbors. What the Twin Cities need is more churches to be lighthouses in the darkness. Pray that we continue to preach the unvarnished truth of God’s word, celebrate the glory of God, and welcome the spiritually dead to find hope, healing, and forgiveness in Jesus.

Third, consider the opportunity we have to spread through church planting locally, sending global partners overseas, and influencing students through Campus Outreach at the University of Northwestern and Bethel University. How might we help others treasure Christ in all of life through our partnership with Bethlehem College and Seminary and the Treasuring Christ Together church planting network?

Labor Today, Pray for Tomorrow

What might the Lord have planned for The North Church? I don’t know. What I do know is that he sovereignly placed us adjacent to the Rice Creek Commons. He has given us hundreds (600+) of children to disciple. He has blessed our church planting efforts. We have a sweet partnership with Bethlehem College and Seminary. We get to influence college students through Campus Outreach. And we are eager to support our existing global partners and to send more to proclaim Christ among the nations.

Join me in praying for what God may do through our collective labors. Pray for the Lord to continue to give us more visitors, more would come to saving faith in Jesus, and many to experience deep heart transformation. Pray for God to raise up more laborers to go into the harvest, both to evangelize locally and among the nations.

Please continue to invest in the future and in this community. Pray for God to lead us as a church to establish the next generation to treasure Christ in all of life. We want all hands on deck and engaged in this work. Put your hand to the plow and join us in praying, planting, and watering so that the Lord might give growth.

I don’t know what the reward or the result of all this is, but I mainly want to hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” At the end of the day, I want to be found faithful with what was entrusted to us. So join the elders in praying for God’s Spirit to blow and move among his people for his glory, for our good, and for the advance of his kingdom.

Looking to Jesus,

Pastor Steven
