Our Commitment to Child Safety

Dear North Church,
A spiritual battle rages for our children.
To some, that may seem like a huge overstatement. Yet, recent news would say otherwise. In Colorado, House Bill 25-1312, makes “deadnaming” and “misgendering” children—this means not using a child’s preferred name or pronouns—a factor in child-custody disputes. Parents who refuse to use their child’s chosen name or pronouns are exercising “coercive control” and are thus liable to lose custody of their children.
The bill, ironically called the Kelly Loving Act, allows the state to revoke custody from parents who misgender their children. Similar legislation in Canada resulted in a father’s six-month prison sentence and $30,000 fine for “misgendering” his teenage daughter.
With the political bent of Minnesota, I would not be surprised if similar legislation were proposed and passed here. There is an ongoing ideological battle for children’s hearts, minds, and bodies. Abortion ends the lives of children before they can begin. Chemical castration and gender mutilation surgery destroy young lives and futures. Our world sexualizes children with LGBTQ curriculum and teaching sexually explicit material in public schools. Unrestricted access to social media and pornography severely damages the minds of children.
A spiritual battle rages for our children.
First, amid this spiritual war, pray for the protection of our children. Pray for wisdom for parents and grandparents. Pray for our leaders to make laws that uphold God’s good design for the family and parental authority for the common good.
Consider Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:5–6 where he says, “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” Jesus cares about children. He will defend the rights of the vulnerable and weak.
Second, educate yourself about our policies and our Commitment to Protecting Our Children. We aim to protect children from false ideologies, but also to guard them from physical harm or abuse at The North Church. We screen all our volunteers who work with the vulnerable, train volunteers to be on alert for concerning behavior, and regularly review our policies and practices.
Additionally, we want your help in protecting the children among us. Our motto is, “If you see something, say something.” If you notice concerning behavior, please notify leaders or volunteers. We also have child protection videos that everyone is encouraged to watch (video 1 and video 2 ).
Thank you for your partnership in making The North Church a place of welcome and safety for children to grow in their love and knowledge of Jesus. We desire to cultivate a culture not of fear, but one that is proactive and protective, prioritizing our children’s well-being. Thanks for your participation and prayers to this end.
Praising God for the little ones,
Pastor Steven
