O Magnify the Lord With Me!

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Family,
One of the reasons I’m eager for us to gather together at Thanksgiving is because of passages like Psalm 34:1–3.
1 I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
Psalm 34, which is an acrostic, is an invitation from King David to give thanks to God. While the latter half of the Psalm resembles wisdom poetry, these opening three verses are a declaration of confidence in God. He has been and will be faithful. The Psalmist invites others to join him in blessing, boasting, and magnifying the Lord together.
How does this inform how I think of Thanksgiving? God is great. We know this. He needs no help from us to display his glory and grace. Yet, the point of praise and worship is to give expression of God’s greatness together as God’s people. Our praise doesn’t make God bigger or better, but it makes others aware of God’s greatness, grace, and kindness toward his people.
This is how I often experience it. Most Sundays, I can look out at the congregation and recognize people who I know are going through difficult situations, suffering, and grieving. I know of families who have lost loved ones. I know of families walking through significant physical suffering. I know of families that are fractured and broken. I know of marriage and parenting struggles. I know of physical illness, longstanding heartache, fear, and anxiety. Yet, I'm so encouraged when I see those same people worshiping God! To see singing amid grief is a sweet testimony of God’s goodness. This happens every week.
Our upcoming Thanksgiving Eve Service allows us to give voice to these various expressions of praise. During that evening, we’ll have an “open mic” moment for congregants to share a one-minute testimony of praise of how God has met you this year. We’ll also have a few planned testimonies of God’s power and grace at work in our church family. So I hope you’ll join us.
Consider reflecting on these questions in the coming days or over your Thanksgiving gatherings and celebrations:
- How has God been faithful to you or your family this year?
- What is one lesson God has taught you this year that you’re thankful for?
- Is there someone you’re especially thankful for because of how they’ve impacted your faith or reminded you of God’s goodness?
- How have you seen God’s hand at work in your life or the lives of others this year?
So I look forward to gathering together on Wednesday, November 27 at 7pm, with our pie social to follow. Just a reminder, there will be no other Wednesday Connection activities that evening (no meal, no choirs, no classes, no Bible studies, or nursery care). We have fifty-five pies being brought so far and still need more; sign up to bring one to share (or just bring one either way).
May we magnify the Lord together,
Pastor Steven
