Love God and Neighbor

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
On Sunday we looked at how Jesus fulfills the Law and Prophets from Matthew 5:17–20. Hopefully, this sheds light on how we relate to the Law of Moses and the Old Testament. We understand the Old Testament in light of Jesus’ fulfillment and his apostles’ teaching.
While I shared a chart on how to understand the Mosaic Law through the lens of Christ, it’s also good to remember that it’s not complicated.
If we fast forward to Matthew 22, we see Jesus’ words: “And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 22:37–40).
The law can be summed up as loving God with our heart, soul, and mind, and loving our neighbors as ourselves. Thus, obedience to God is manifest in faith, trusting and loving God, and love for our neighbors. It’s not a complicated equation that requires endless wrestling. Rather, we seek to honor God in everything we do and to love our neighbors as Christ has loved us.
Thus, faith is not a private affair of the mind but manifests in actions that love God and neighbor. It is to be displayed and lived out in our lives. God’s law has now been written on our hearts and minds (Hebrews 10:16). Christians possess the Holy Spirit that guides us to love God and love others. So by all means, don’t be paralyzed by the complexity of the Mosaic Law. Rather, love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.
This means we take small, simple, and faith-filled steps of obedience to love God and others. With that in view, you’re invited to participate with us on Wednesday, January 22 at the Minnesota Capitol for the March for Life (for those who are able) and join us in supporting the ministry of New Life Family Services, our pro-life partner serving those facing crisis or unwanted pregnancies. Join us in praying for God to make abortion unthinkable in our nation and world.
I look forward to gathering as we dive into the next section of Matthew 5. Pastor Nick Whitehead will guide us this Sunday.
Grateful for Jesus,
Pastor Steven
