Love and Serve One Another

Dear North Church,

One of the things I love about The North Church is our willingness and eagerness to serve one another in love. This attitude of heartfelt affection is one of the distinctive characteristics of a healthy church family. Jesus says that it should be what we are known for: “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

In our current cultural climate, it’s easy to grow inward. It’s easy to think about ourselves. The world is eager to encourage our selfishness. We have everything “on demand,” from media and entertainment to overnight delivery. Social media allows us to cultivate our image. Our world tells us that what we need is more “self-care” and “me time.” What ails us is that we are serving others “too much” and we need to serve ourselves more. Our world idolizes the self and our own comfort.

Yet, when we come together as a church family, we lay down those idols of self. We may sing some songs that we don’t love, but perhaps are ministering to someone else in the congregation. We gather with people that we wouldn’t otherwise know or spend time with. We pray for each other. We bring meals to one another. We give to enable ministry to the neighborhoods and to the nations. We don’t mainly come to church thinking, “What can I get today,” but rather, “How might God use me to serve and bless others today?”

I know this is the overwhelming heart and desire of The North Church. For this, I am so grateful. We have hundreds who serve in a multitude of ways: ushers, welcomers, security teams, communion servers, custodians, nursery workers, small group leaders, children’s ministry teams, prayer team, student leaders, those who open their homes, counselors, musicians, singers, AV teams, offering counters, and the list goes on and on. Praise God!

And, I want to invite you to prayerfully consider serving if you’re not already. I firmly believe that we are healthier when every member serves in some capacity. Paul writes, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Cor 12:7). I want to fan the flame of love and mutual service so that we continue to shine the light of the glory of Christ. So that we continue to take our eyes off ourselves and look out for the interests of others. I’m eager to see us encourage each other in love and service.

With this in mind, consider stopping by one of the Fall Focus ministry tables that are in the Commons. Last week, we featured various ways you can serve (ESL, ushers, greeters, information booth, Children’s Ministry, and security team). This week, we’ll be featuring small groups and adult Sunday school classes. Would you prayerfully consider serving and participating if you’re not already? By this, the world will know that we are Jesus’ disciples.

With thanksgiving,

Pastor Steven
