Light in the Dark

Dear North Church,

I, like many of you, witness increasing polarization in our world. As horrific as the assassination of Charlie Kirk was, it was revolting (but not shocking) to see many cheer and celebrate his death on social media. These were medical professionals, educators, and businessmen and women. These were not just fringe radicals, but people who are our neighbors and coworkers. Even if they are a small minority, the fact that a subset of our society cheers the murder of a Christian conservative who sought to have debates on college campuses is alarming.

The intended effect of this assassination is to say, “If you speak out, you too will be cut down.” Yet, as Christians who possess the words of life, who have God on our side, and who are commissioned to proclaim Christ, we cannot and will not back down.

Instead, let us, with fresh courage, conviction, and love for the lost, speak the truth in love. Let us engage our neighbors and coworkers in dialogue to seize the opportunity to “make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15). In a weary world, we have hope to share! Consider the following:

God Is On Our Side | There is an amazing story of the king of Syria seeking to hunt down Elisha, the prophet of God (2 Kings 6). The king sends a great army of chariots and horses to capture Elisha. They go under the cover of darkness, surround the city of Dothan, and intend to capture Elisah. In the morning, Elisha’s servant sees the great army and despairs. What does Elisha say? “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them” (2 Kings 6:16). This word from Elisha remains true. In the words of Paul, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). Do not fear; God is on our side.

Shine as Light in the Darkness | Now, more than ever, our world needs a gentle and respectful Christian witness. Jesus tells the church, “You are the salt of the earth … You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13–14). Engage your neighbor or coworker over coffee. Draw them out with questions. Lean in when your temptation is to withdraw. People are looking for answers, hope, and transcendence. Listen to their questions and be ready to point to a better story, the message of Jesus Christ.

Social Media Isn’t Real Life | Unfortunately, many saw the video of the assassination minutes after it happened on social media. We are being shaped by what we see. We can begin to believe that the loudest, most provocative, and least reasonable voices online reflect everyone around me (on either side). Social media amplifies distrust, division, and discord. Let me encourage us to log off (or turn off the TV), take a walk, pray, and limit our media intake that is shaping our hearts and minds.

God is Working | John Piper once tweeted, “God is always doing 10,000 things in your life, and you may be aware of three of them.” This is also true in this situation. We see evil rear its ugly head. Yet God is doing a billion things in our world at this moment. Pray for God to use this for eternal, lasting, life-saving good in the lives of millions. Pray for God to awaken the world to its deep hunger for truth, hope, and life, found only in Jesus. Pray for God to give you renewed joy in standing up and standing firm as a witness for Jesus Christ in our world. Pray for our church to shine in the darkness. Pray for God’s mercy upon our nation.

“Therefore, my beloved brothers [and sisters], be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58). Let’s continue to treasure Christ in all of life, and invite others to join us in doing the same.

In Christ,

Pastor Steven
