Kernel to Kingdom: Sowing Seeds for a Global Harvest

Dear North Church,
We approach the second Sunday of Global Focus. Our theme has been “Kernel to Kingdom: Sowing Seeds for a Global Harvest.” Acorns are small, fitting into the palm of a hand. Yet, when planted and watered, they grow into plants and eventually into massive trees. The same idea is true when seeds of the gospel are planted.
On Wednesday evening, I shared the story of Robert A. Jaffray. For those who weren’t able to join us, here is a highly abbreviated version of his life story. He was born in 1873, converted at 16, trained to be a missionary at 20, and departed to serve overseas as a missionary at 24. He served a total of 48 years in East and Southeast Asia, eventually dying in a Japanese concentration camp.
Yet, his impact in the region was massive. He helped start two different Bible schools, one in China and another in Indonesia. Both are still in operation today! He pioneered a publishing press and Bible magazine. He brought missionaries into new areas, such as Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. His 48 years of ministry reaped incredible results.
Yet, we can point to how it all began. When Robert Jaffray was 16, he heard the gospel from a Sunday school teacher at his church. He came to faith in Jesus, and this faith set his life in motion. This is the kernel that later became a great harvest in the kingdom of God.
We have our own story of sending missionaries back in 1890 when we were the First Swedish Baptist Church of Minneapolis (later becoming Bethlehem Baptist Church, and then becoming The North Church). You can read about Ola Hanson and how he brought the gospel to the Kachin people of Burma.
Pray for God to raise up the next Hudson Taylors, Amy Carmichaels, Robert Jaffrays, and Ola Hansons to bring the gospel to the ends of the earth. Pray for God to establish our children, youth, and young people with faith that is rooted and grounded in God. Pray for the thousands of faithful laborers—teaching Sunday school, sharing the gospel, leading family worship, having gospel conversations, befriending unbelievers—to reap a great harvest of souls for the glory of God.
God has been working, God is working, and God will continue to work to cause his glory to reach the very ends of the earth. Let’s plant, water, and trust that God will indeed give the growth and bring about a great harvest at the appropriate time.
In Christ,
Pastor Steven
