Invitation to Knowing Christ

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

Some of you know that I’ve been working on my Doctorate of Ministry (DMin, not to be mistaken for demon) with an emphasis in preaching at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. I have finished my coursework and drafted several chapters of my ministry project. My project aims to teach the diverse excellencies of Jesus at The North Church.

The phrase “diverse excellencies” comes from Jonathan Edwards’ sermon “The Excellency of Christ,” where he remarks, “There is an admirable conjunction of diverse excellencies in Jesus Christ.” These “diverse excellencies” are the seemingly contradictory qualities in Jesus. Edwards argues that these paradoxical attributes uniquely reveal the majesty and beauty of Jesus. He is both the Lion and the Lamb. He is infinitely high and exalted and infinitely humble to condescend to mankind. He embodies perfect justice and perfect grace.

One aspect of my ministry project is to teach these paradoxical qualities of Jesus. This teaching aims to give us greater joy in Jesus, conform us to the image of Christ, and spur on evangelistic zeal. Few things are more worthwhile, beneficial, and joy-producing for the believer than contemplating the qualities and characteristics of Jesus. In many ways, this is what we have been doing in our Advent series.

With this in mind, I invite you to the Knowing Christ Seminar on January 23–24 (Friday, January 23 from 6:30–9pm and Saturday, January 24 from 8:30am–Noon). I hope to teach on the idea of paradox in theology and the diverse excellencies of Christ to help us grow in our appreciation of Jesus’ unparalleled greatness.

Normally, our seminars have a minimal cost ($10) to help offset some of the resources and refreshments, but we’re making this seminar free so more can attend, though we’d still like folks to RSVP online. We hope many of you will come and learn about the diverse excellencies of Jesus (and provide data for my ministry project through a survey).

And as we continue through Advent, may we see more of Jesus, grow in our love for him, experience his peace, and be eager to share the good news of Christ with our neighbors and the nations.

Seeking to see more of Jesus,

Pastor Steven
