Introducing The North Institute

Josh Bremerman
Pastor for Discipleship
Dear North Church,
I want to introduce you to a new initiative launching this Fall: The North Institute. No, we are not starting another Bethlehem College & Seminary, but this overarching name encompasses all of our ongoing efforts related to adult education here at The North Church. The North Institute intends to teach on areas of belief and practice in order to equip adults at our church to treasure Christ in all of life.
The Bible does not shy away from connecting belief and practice. For example, Paul writes, “We have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:9–10). Paul seamlessly weaves together knowledge of God with the result of bearing fruit. Spiritual wisdom and understanding leads to worthy walking.
So, how do we intend to go about this? The North Institute includes four elements:
- What We Believe | For new believers, people newer to our church, or anyone ready to think more deeply about their faith, this class teaches through our Elder Affirmation of Faith in order to help participants consider major questions about the Christian faith and how we answer those questions at The North Church. This class will be offered on Wednesday nights in the Spring of 2026.
- Core Classes | We plan to offer three “tracks” of core classes: Bible, Theology, and Christian Life. These classes seek to answer the question, “What should we know about the foundations of Christian faith and practice?” The first two core classes will run through this school year, starting in September 2025, and you can even register now. The Bible Track will run on Wednesday nights at 7pm, considering topics such as how to read and study the Bible well, the story of the Bible as a whole, and the message of each individual book. The Theology Track will run on Sunday mornings at 11am, looking at doctrines all Christians believe, doctrines we hold dear at The North Church, and how we received those doctrines through church history.
- Equipping Classes | Ongoing, in-depth classes on parenting, prayer, one-anothering, and other elements of the Christian life will attempt to apply the beliefs we hold and the disciplines we practice to concrete areas in our lives.
- Seminars | Through seminars, we will focus on specific topics in three areas of Christian formation: (1) Theological Issues (for example, the diverse excellencies of Christ); (2) Practical Issues (for example, navigating culture—sports, films, etc.); (3) Group-Specific Issues (for example, Faith in the Workplace). The first of these seminars will be offered this November 7th–8th on the topic of “Finishing the Race: Aging Well.” Be on the lookout for more information in the future!
We endeavor toward these ends knowing that “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” (1 Corinthians 8:1), so our focus in all of these things will be that our “love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment” (Philippians 1:9). I want to invite you all to consider ways you might search out the glory of God with your mind this year—to the everlasting fruit of your joy in Christ.
Grace to you,
Pastor Josh
