His Blood is Bibline

Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
English Preacher Charles Spurgeon famously said of John Bunyan, “Prick him anywhere—his blood is Bibline, the very essence of the Bible flows from him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is full of the Word of God. I commend his example to you, beloved.” He was commenting on the richness of Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, which was so saturated with Scripture.
Last week, I shared two of our values. These are the things that guide our decisions as a church. Namely, we seek to be God-centered and Christ-exalting in all that we do. Another value that we have is to be Bible-saturated. We want to build our convictions on the truth of God’s word.
But more than just having biblical convictions and biblical beliefs, we want to be visibly and tangibly Bible-saturated (2 Tim 3:16). We want the Bible to be the focus of our gatherings, as it is the only way to hear from God. We want to study the Bible in our children’s Sunday school classes. We teach our students to read and study the Bible in middle and high school. Our small groups discuss the Bible. Our men’s and women’s Bible studies, well, study the Bible. We want to be Bible-saturated people so that we would hear from God and obey him, as well as see and become more like Christ.
The sad state of churches today in America is that nearly every single one will say that they care about the Bible. They would say they preach from it, teach from it, and care about it. Yet, how they handle the Bible, the emphasis they place on it, and its prominence in ministry reveal how they really feel about it.
Our desire at The North Church is for our corporate gatherings to be full of the Scriptures, saturating our announcements, prayers, sermons, and songs (1 Tim 4:13). We want to be like cows who continually chew the cud of God’s word, regurgitating it, consuming it again, and allowing the Bible’s language and words to flavor our hearts, minds, words, and souls.
And as we step out into a world that searches for hope, peace, and meaning, may we get pricked and bleed Bibline. May we be ready to share the reason for the hope that is in us (1 Peter 3:15). May we be eager to stand firm for truth and share the gospel with those in need. So join us as we seek to get more of God’s word into our veins, enlivening our minds and hearts and emboldening us to shine the light of Christ to those around us.
Grateful for God’s word,
Pastor Steven
