Great Truths from Great Hymns

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

Summer Wednesday Connection is just around the corner! This is a midweek gathering we have observed for over twenty years. For many, it’s a highlight of their summer. We will gather on Wednesdays from June to August (except August 6) at Long Lake Regional Park’s Picnic Pavilion in New Brighton. We hope you’ll join us!

This summer, our teaching theme will be “Great Truths from Great Hymns.” Each week, we’ll look at some of the great biblical truths captured in timeless hymns of the Christian faith. Many of these hymns have stood the test of time for a reason. They are familiar melodies, but they also teach biblical truth and reinforce foundational doctrines of our faith. The goal is to see these truths from the Bible so that our faith might be strengthened and our worship enriched.

For example, consider Martin Luther’s “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” This hymn proclaims the sovereignty of God and revels in his great power and faithfulness. The opening line is drawn from Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” This hymn was written in German during the Protestant Reformation and reflects Luther’s trust in God’s sovereignty in difficulty and danger.

Luther sought to revive congregational singing among the German people by using secular melodies. He wrote, “A person who…does not regard music as a marvelous creation of God…does not deserve to be called a human being; he should be permitted to hear nothing but the braying of assess and the grunting of hogs.” Strong words from Luther!

We hope you’ll join us this summer! Dinner is served at 5:30 pm (adults - $5, kids - $3, family max - $20), teaching at 6:15 pm, and fellowship into the evening. Pastor Sam will kick us off on June 4, looking at “Great is Thy Faithfulness.”

One last note. In addition to keeping an eye on your children while at the park, be on the lookout for visitors and guests. Over the summer months, we have new folks visiting every Sunday and Wednesday. Let’s seek to help them experience the warmth and welcome of The North Church, and invite unbelievers into community as they learn more about the gospel of Jesus Christ. I hope you’ll invite neighbors and friends to join us as well. It’s a casual and unintimidating setting to be introduced to who we are.

Lastly, continue to pray for our ongoing witness among our neighbors during these summer months. There is much significant spiritual hunger and hopelessness present in our world. May we be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us with gentleness, respect, and joy (1 Peter 3:15).

In Christ,

Pastor Steven
