Global Diaconate and Celebrating 20 Years for Pastor Jon

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

Some of you may not know that we have the Global Diaconate. I’ve asked Pastor Nick, Pastor for Global Outreach, to share an update about this ministry for our encouragement and prayer. It is one of the ways we seek to address poverty and crisis around the world in the name of Jesus, and fulfill Galatians 6:10, “As we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” May God use this ministry to advance his kingdom and cause many to come to saving faith.

Global Diaconate Update from Pastor Nick

As we begin 2026, I am grateful for the way the Lord has provided for our church this last year through the generosity of his people. One of the ways we seek to steward the resources you give is to bless those in financial need. Even as the apostle Paul prioritized the preaching of the gospel, he was eager also to remember the poor (Gal 2:10) and help get aid to Christians in need (Rom 15:26).

One of the ways we do this is through our Helping Hand Ministry, which seeks to coordinate financial assistance to those connected to our church body here in the Twin Cities. But you may be less aware that we also seek to distribute financial help to the poor on a global scale. We call this the Global Diaconate. This committee aims to partner with trusted connections around the world to address poverty and crisis issues on a larger scale by disbursing strategic financial grants in the name of Jesus Christ.

This year, the Global Diaconate distributed $45,000 worth of grants to various projects. This included ten gifts to nine different countries through four North Church global partners and five trusted partners. 43% of the total funds were distributed through our own global partners and 57% through other trusted partners. All of the trusted partners we worked with this year were either recommended to us by our global partners or were personal connections of committed members of our church.

The grants were very evenly split between community development projects and disaster relief situations. The community development projects focused on support for clean water, education, medical care, and orphan care. The disaster relief grants were used to provide emergency supplies like food, water, temporary shelter, medical treatment, and rebuilding supplies to the most needy who were affected by the earthquake in Myanmar, the earthquake and double typhoons affecting the Philippines, and Hurricane Melissa in Cuba. If you would like to see more details on each of the projects or would be interested in giving to the most recent relief efforts in Cuba and the Philippines, please learn more in the Global Diaconate section of our Global Outreach webpage.

I’m thankful for the team that served along with me this year to assess proposals and steward the resources of our church to bless the nations: Derek Dearth, Pam Larson, James Morgan, Steve Prater (committee chair), Tim Richterkessing, and Warren Weber. If you’d be interested in hearing more about the Global Diaconate and the projects we’ve invested in, feel free to contact Steve Prater.

Pastor Jon Nowlin Celebrates 20 Years on Staff

Join me in praising God for the good gift of Pastor Jon Nowlin to the staff of The North Church. I often say that Pastor Jon is the most experienced and wise youth pastor in America. He is discerning, thoughtful, careful, diligent, and eager to shape and shepherd our youth with God’s word. He is patient, gentle, and kind. He is blessed with a godly helpmate in Mandy, and four kids who, by God’s grace, are walking with the Lord. He celebrates two decades here on staff! I am immensely thankful for Pastor Jon and for how he loves, serves, and influences our youth, holds fast to God’s word, and seeks to reflect Jesus in all that he does. Join me in thanking God for Pastor Jon. Send him a note of encouragement or grab him a box of his favorite candies, Hot Tamales, if you’re so inclined.

With thanksgiving,

Pastor Steven
