Giving Thanks to God on Independence Day

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

Today is Independence Day in the United States, marking the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Over this weekend, many of us will enjoy brats and burgers, lemonade, fireworks displays, and spending time with family and friends.

It is good and right to thank God that we live in a country such as America. Yes, we are sojourners and exiles here on earth, and our ultimate citizenship is in heaven (1 Pet 2:11, Phil 3:20). Yet, we can give thanks that we live in a particular place, with a particular culture, with a particular set of rules and laws. Though no place will be perfect until we live in the new creation, there are certainly some places, more than others, where Christians can freely worship, gather, and live in allegiance to King Jesus.

We can be thankful for American freedoms. We can be grateful for those whose sacrifices enable us to enjoy American blessings and privileges. In an age where it is in vogue to denigrate America, there is no other time or place I’d rather live. My guess is that most of you would agree. And amid our festivities and celebration, we can give thanks to God for the country in which we live, even while our ultimate allegiance belongs to King Jesus and his everlasting kingdom.

As we celebrate and give thanks, take a moment today to pray for our nation.

Pray for Repentance of Our Nation's Sins

In addition to praying for our sins, we can pray on behalf of our nation for our collective wickedness and cast ourselves upon the mercy of Christ. We are a nation that has indulged in idolatry, sexual immorality, pride, abortion, racism, greed and materialism, blasphemy, and the rejection of God’s word and design. But praise be to God, for he is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness (Ex 34:6). May he cause a great awakening of our sins, and may we turn to God afresh as a nation.

Pray for Our Leaders and Legislators to Rule Rightly

This is a good day to pray for President Trump, Vice President Vance, his cabinet members, Congress, Supreme Court justices, lower federal courts, our Minnesota State legislators, and even our city officials. Paul urges us to make supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings for all who are in high positions so that we may lead peaceful and quiet lives, godly and dignified in every way (1 Tim 2:1–2). Pray that they rule with wisdom, enact justice, and do good. Pray that they would establish and enforce laws that stop evil and encourage what is good.

Pray to Be Salt and Light Wherever You Are

Lastly, pray for God to use you wherever he has placed you. You can be an earthly citizen for the good and flourishing of our communities. We work, run businesses, teach, serve, and labor to be a blessing to others. We are to seek the welfare of our cities and communities so that our neighbors might be blessed through us (Jer 29:7). We are to do good to all, especially to those of the household of faith. While nations rise and fall, legislators get voted in and voted out, most of our daily lives revolve around home, school, work, and neighbors. Let’s shine the light of Christ in each of those places for the glory of Christ.

So on a day such as this, I’m grateful for America and the freedoms we enjoy. Despite the challenges our world and country face, we live in perhaps the greatest country at the greatest time on earth. And for all of us who are in Christ, we have a greater ruler—King Jesus. We have a greater hope—the hope of the resurrection. We have a greater citizenship—citizenship in heaven.

With thanks to King Jesus,

Pastor Steven
