For He Is Good!

Dear North Church,

Last year, we introduced our first Thanksgiving Eve Service and Pie Social. It was a gloriously sweet time to gather, worship, and share testimonies of what God is doing and has done. We had several hundred people and hundreds of slices of pie that we enjoyed together. I hope to make this an annual tradition for The North Church, so you are all invited to mark your calendars for our Thanksgiving Eve Service on Wednesday, November 26, from 6:30 to 8pm, followed by pie!

Our theme this year comes out of Psalm 106:1, “Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” One of the great antidotes against misplaced fear and anxiety is remembering who God is and what he has done. We need to periodically lift our eyes to the hills or the horizon, remembering that our help comes from the Lord, maker of heaven and earth (Ps 121:1). The Lord promises to keep our lives and to watch over our going out and coming in forever (Ps 121:8).

The Apostle Paul exhorts the Philippians to not be anxious, but instead to pray, asking God for his help “with thanksgiving” (Phil 4:6). Giving thanks is essential and vital to remembering that God is good. We can look back and see how he has worked all things together for good and then trust him in the things that don’t yet seem good.

It can be easy to grow discouraged, despondent, and frustrated at the state of our world, communities, family, or even our own personal lives. Perhaps you’ve experienced loss, conflict, or things are not as you hoped or planned. Nonetheless, let me encourage us to reflect upon God’s goodness revealed to us in Jesus and in his overabundant blessings.

So I hope you’ll save the date and plan to join us if you’re not traveling to extended family that evening. For those in the Twin Cities, plan to come, spend a couple of hours giving thanks, and be ready to share a word of thanksgiving to God during our “open mic” time.

We’ll also conclude our time together with a “potluck” pie social. Consider signing up to bring a pie or two (store-bought or homemade) to share as we thank God for every good and perfect gift.

With much to be thankful for,

Pastor Steven
