Cultivating Healthy Marriages

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
I am eager to see the marriages in our church magnify Christ. In light of preaching on divorce this past Sunday from Matthew 5:31–32, let me share several resources.
Preserving Our Marriages from The North Church Membership Booklet
God designed marriage to reflect the beauty and permanence of Christ’s loving relationship with his bride, the church (Ephesians 5:22–33; Revelation 19:7). Therefore, he established marriage to be a life-long, exclusive covenant relationship between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24; Malachi 2:14; Matthew 19:4–6). God also designed it to provide mutual companionship through life’s joys and difficulties, to create stability for raising and nurturing children, and to give strength and cohesiveness to society in general.
In our society, marriages fail under a wide range of circumstances. Many people have gone through a divorce before having a relationship with Christ and have found repentance and forgiveness in coming to Christ. Others have experienced divorce through no desire or decision of their own. Still others, even after professing faith in Christ, may have divorced because of their own wrongful choices, but have since repented and received the forgiveness offered through our Lord Jesus. Whatever the circumstances, we welcome everyone to The North Church—single, married, and divorced.
Marriage Conference Sessions | In 2023, we held the Persevering Together Marriage Conference at The North Church. You can watch any of the three main sessions: (1) Pastor Brian on Idolatry and Worship in Marriage, (2) Pastor Steven on Suffering and Sanctification in Marriage, and (3) Pastor Sam on Sin and Grace in Marriage.
Foundations for Marriage Class | If you are considering marriage, are engaged to be married, or want a refresher for your marriage, you can register for the Foundations for Marriage class (9am–3:30pm on two Saturdays, February 22 and March 1). This class will examine God’s Word, answer questions, and provide opportunities to interact together as a couple. Topics will include the gospel and marriage, roles in marriage, communication, conflict, and sexual intimacy. You can find out more information and register anytime now through February 14th here.
Biblical Counseling | If you and your spouse are stuck in unhealthy patterns of sin, you can request biblical counseling from our lay counselors at church here.
Recommended Books | If you’d like a few recommended books to read and discuss with your spouse, another couple, or your small group, see the following recommendations from Pastor Brian. They will be available in the library and bookstore.
- Love That Lasts by Gary and Betsy Ricucci
- Marriage: 6 Gospel Commitments Every Couple Needs to Make by Paul Tripp
- Gospel-Centered Marriage by Tim Chester
May the Lord cause our marriages to serve as salt and light in our world so that some will see the goodness of God’s design lived out in our marriages and families and give glory to God who is in heaven.
Pray for the Youth Winter Retreat
This weekend, we have over 200 middle school and high school students, adult volunteers, and staff at our winter retreat at Camp Lebanon. Pray for the safety of the students, drivers, and volunteers. Pray that the students will see more of Christ over this weekend. The theme will be STAND! Pastors Jon and Ben, along with seminarian Boaz Prince, will be teaching from the Book of Jude.
In Christ,
Pastor Steven
