Corbett Update and Sermon Resources

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

Below are three things I want to draw your attention to.

Praising God for Ryan Corbett’s Release

As many have seen, Ryan Corbett was released from an Afghanistan prison this past week. Praise God! Many of you know their history and the good work they have been doing in the Middle East. Ryan was imprisoned in Afghanistan for 894 days but was released this week in a prisoner trade. We are praising God for his good provision. Pray for the Corbett family as Ryan reunites with his wife and children, as he recovers physically, and as they reflect on these experiences.

Pray that Ryan’s suffering and imprisonment will testify to Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:11 says, “For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.” Pray that the seeds of the gospel planted will bear the fruit of faith among some.

Please note that the Corbett’s organization has asked that no social media or public posts be made connecting the family to any specific churches or organizations to protect their family, other families who serve the same people, and their in-country friends. Let’s praise God and celebrate his release.

Resources for Fighting Anger

Last Sunday, Pastor Nick shared an important word from Matthew 5:21–26 on unrighteous anger. For those struggling with unrighteous anger, here is a recommended resource: Uprooting Anger: Biblical Help for a Common Problem by Robert D. Jones (available at the bookstore and in the church library).

May we be eager to repent of unrighteous anger, reconcile with those we have wronged, forgive those who sin against us, and live at peace with all.

Resources for Fighting and Fleeing Lust

This Sunday, I will preach Matthew 5:27–37, a section that discusses lust, divorce, and oaths. Lust is a massive issue in our world today. Let me share one preemptive encouragement and a few resources.

If lust, pornography, or other sexual sin is a problem for you, let me encourage you to seek out help. Bring this struggle into the light (1 John 1:7). Don’t fight this battle alone. I encourage you to share with a trusted friend, small group leader, mentor, or pastor/elder. This is one significant way to expose the deeds of darkness and begin to walk in the light. Lust and pornography have become ubiquitous and even accepted in our culture. Let it not be so among God’s people who are called to holiness like our heavenly Father.

Here are a few resources to work through with a friend, mentor, or fellow small group member. Again, don’t fight this alone.

If you are stuck in these sins or are struggling to grow, we have a lay counseling team at church who is eager to help. You can learn more or request counseling here.

These books will be available at the bookstore and library in the upcoming weeks. I plan to share more on this topic this Sunday. Pray for God’s Spirit to meet us as we gather under the authority of God’s word.

In Christ,

Pastor Steven
