An Invitation to Cry Out to God

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
As we come to the end of a year, it’s natural for us to reflect on areas we want to grow. For me, the same few areas always come up. I want to be a more loving husband, a more patient and encouraging father, a better pastor and preacher, and a more devoted pray-er. I am acutely aware there is room to grow. I suspect I’ll never feel that I have “arrived.” And while I live and walk by the grace of God to be who I am, I continually strive by God’s grace to keep growing. I wonder how many of you can relate.
As we consider growing as pray-ers, I want to encourage us to see that with God, all things are possible. While I’m naturally bent toward being a realist—seeing the problems, obstacles, and challenges to get to the destination—it’s good to remind ourselves who it is that we pray to. We have the ear of God! We know the Creator and Sustainer of everyone and everything. The Lord of the universe, who rules and reigns on high, is who we know, who we can pray to, and who is for us. What an amazing gift!
With this type of access to the God of the universe, do we then ask for much? Or are we guilty of not having because we do not ask (James 4:2)? Instead, remember that all things are possible for God (Mark 14:36). When we are tempted to doubt or despair, we ought to remember, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). God can save whoever he wills—do you pray and ask? At the virgin birth—where Mary said, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”—the angel replied, “For nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1:34, 37).
So let me invite us to cry out to God in 2026. Ask the Lord to do far more than we can ask or imagine. May he awaken many to saving faith from among our families, friends, coworkers, and enemies. May he have mercy upon us as a nation, awakening great repentance. May he grow our love, devotion, prayerfulness, joy, and produce a great harvest a hundredfold. May he save our children and grandchildren. May he turn back the wayward ones who have wandered away. May he awaken us to his goodness and glory afresh.
May our collective prayer be like that of Jeremiah: “Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you” (Jeremiah 32:17). Let that be our corporate prayer, and may the Lord do much for his glory and our joy in him.
Preaching Update | This Sunday, December 28, Pastor Josh Bremerman will conclude 2025 by looking at Jesus’ words to the church at Laodicea in Revelation 3:14–22. In 2026, we’ll resume our series in Matthew’s Gospel, with the following schedule:
- December 28: Revelation 3:14–22 with Pastor Josh
- January 4: Matthew 14:1–12 with Pastor Sam
- January 11: Matthew 14:13–21 with Pastor Steven
- January 18: Matthew 14:22–36 with Pastor Steven
- January 25: Matthew 15:1–20 with Pastor Nick
Year-End Financial Update | Lastly, join us in praying for an overflow of joyful generosity to meet our church’s year-end expenses, and read a financial update from Pastor Jon. May we excel not only in love, faith, speech, knowledge, and earnestness, but also in our giving and generosity to support the work of Christ’s church (2 Cor 8:7). Thank you for regularly giving and praying, and asking God to supply all our needs according to his riches in Christ. We have $230K remaining to cover our estimated 2025 ministry expenses, and $530K is needed by year-end (12/31) to meet our budget and replenish operating reserves to start 2026 financially strong. May God continue to enable grace-driven generosity for his glory.
Praying with you,
Pastor Steven
