A Pastoral Transition, Summer Preaching Schedule, and Pastor Jon’s Sabbatical

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
I encourage you to read this email. There are several important items to keep you informed, solicit your prayers, and involve your participation. Thanks for praying and asking God to do far more than we can ask or imagine. God is good, and he does good! I am grateful for his presence and power among us and trust he will continue that good work until Christ returns.
Pastoral Transition: Aaron Rothermel
Pastor Aaron has shared with the elders that he has accepted a position with Together For Good (TFG). He will conclude serving at The North Church on Monday, June 9. Pastor Aaron has served our children’s ministry for the past four years, and we are grateful for his contributions and labors. We are also thankful for his wife, Liz, and their children, who have embedded themselves at The North Church.
Pastor Aaron shares the following note:
I arrived in late fall 2020 as the Pastor for Children and Families. I love this church and have been delighted to see many of you flourish using your gifts. I am sensing that the Lord is leading me into a new season as I serve with Together for Good, a Christ-centered organization dedicated to creating pathways for local churches to come alongside vulnerable children and families. As the Minnesota Site Director, I will lead the Minnesota team and build key partnerships to connect those who need help with those who can help. Our family will remain at this church we love, as I step off staff and away from serving as an elder to focus on this new role. I am eager to continue to serve alongside you as we each use our varied gifts with the strength God supplies (1 Peter 4:10).
Join me in thanking God for the Rothermels. They plan to continue attending The North Church, though Aaron will no longer be on staff or on the elder council.
As we look ahead, pray for God to bring the right individual to serve in this critical role as Pastor for Children and Families. The job description and church profile will be linked below if you want to pass them along to prospective applicants.
On a related note, please also prayerfully consider serving in our children’s ministry next year. I would love to retain many of our volunteers to ensure we can start our fall ministry on time and fully staffed. We have several hundred children learning about Jesus from the Bible through our Sunday and Wednesday classes, and I would love to see that continue without any interruption. If you are interested in serving, please contact us.
Summer Preaching Schedule
Sometimes in the summer, we take a break from our existing sermon series to focus on other topics or books. This summer, we will continue to preach through Matthew’s Gospel. I plan to step away from the pulpit for several weeks, but our other pastors and elders will continue to provide faithful preaching from God’s word.
Here is the preaching schedule for June:
- June 1 - Nick Whitehead (Matthew 9:27–34)
- June 8 - Joshua Greever (Matthew 9:35–38)
- June 15 - Josh Bremerman (Matthew 10:1–4)
- June 22 - Brian Liechty (Matthew 10:5–15)
- June 29 - Steven Lee (Matthew 10:16–23)
Kids in Service
Summer provides a special opportunity for families to worship together. At our Sunday 9 and 11 am services, we will continue to offer childcare for the youngest ones (infant through 3 years old), but will not have other children’s classes available. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to model worship together and begin training children to participate. While it may come with some wiggles and whispers, it’s worth it. Children learn to value what we value—not just by what we say, but by what we do. When they see parents worshiping, praying, and listening to God’s Word, they’re being shaped. Even if they don’t understand everything, they’re catching the joy of gathering together as God’s people. So parents, you’re invited to embrace this summer rhythm as an opportunity to help your children participate in corporate worship.
We plan to make activity sheets available each week. Parents may also want to plan for Sunday by reading the Scripture passage together that week, bringing doodling or note-taking resources for the sermon, learning the songs in advance, and strategies to help restless children stay attentive.
Pastor Jon’s Sabbatical
Many of you know that Pastor Jon Nowlin will be on sabbatical from ministry from June through August. Pray for their family as they step away from the regular demands of ministry. Pray for their time connecting with extended family, caring for parents, celebrating milestones among their children, and that they would be able to commune deeply with Jesus.
Lastly, join me in praying for our continued ministry, witness in the community, and as we transition towards our summer rhythms. Let’s continue to gather together, pray for each other, worship together, and delight in Christ.
With thanksgiving,
Pastor Steven
