2025 Is a Gift from God

Dear North Family,

The start of a new year can elicit a range of feelings. For some, there is great excitement at the endless possibilities. On a recent evening, my wife remarked at the dinner table, “2025 is going to be a big year for us.” We’ll have one licensed driver in PSEO (Lord willing), two in high school, one in middle school, and two others bringing up the rear. Perhaps some of you are in a similar situation. 2025 looms large, full of energy, anticipation, and activity. You have new opportunities at work, babies and grandbabies on the horizon, or big life transitions that lie ahead.

Perhaps for others, you’re crawling into the new year. Sickness and disease continue their unwelcome stay. Caring for aging parents is a labor of love that is equally rewarding and exhausting. Maybe you’re neck deep in dirty diapers, soiled car seats, and barely getting enough sleep. Or perhaps, 2025 is just another year. It will look a lot like 2024 except that you’re one year older and pessimistically, one year closer to death.

Regardless of how you feel about the new year, let me suggest that this year is a glorious gift from God so that we might make much of him. James 1:17 reminds us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” 2025 is a gift from the Lord. You have life and breathe to worship, trust, and walk by faith. He has given us another year to lavish his grace upon us. His mercies are new every morning and he will give more fresh mercy for each morning of 2025 (Lamentations 3:23).

While we may have resolutions, goals, and aspirations for the new year, consider that you have been gifted another year to treasure Christ in all of life. Let our heart's prayer be, “So teach us to number our days, that we may get a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). 2025 has been ordained by God for us so that we might love, know, and trust him all the more (Psalm 139:16).

So whether we have big plans or small aspirations for the coming year, whether we launch off into 2025 with energy or at barely a crawl, know that God is with us. He tells his children, “The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore” (Psalm 121:8). Whether 2025 is your final year of life (it may be for some of us) or just another year nestled between many others, 2025 is the year of the Lord. God is sovereign over our world and our days, and he governs the world according to his infinite wisdom and power.

In the midst of eating healthier, losing a few pounds, taking your vitamins, recommitting to your Bible reading plan, or setting professional goals for yourself, make this a year where we are mindful that we live, move, and have our being by the grace of God (Acts 17:28).

So join me in seeking to walk by faith, trust in God’s sovereignty, and rest in Christ’s grace as we treasure Christ in all of life for his glory and our joy in 2025. I look forward to worshiping together as we continue our series in the Sermon on the Mount this Sunday. May the Lord continue to make us oaks of righteousness who are steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord our labors are not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

With affection in Christ,

Pastor Steven
