Update from Indonesia

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

Thank you for praying for my time in Indonesia! I believe the Lord answered many of your prayers. My daughter Noelle and I made it there safely without any trouble, and we stayed healthy throughout our trip. We were able to spend time with our Global Partners, and I was able to give four messages at the missions conference of Jaffray Makassar School of Theological Philosophy.

My four messages were on the theme: “Go. Do. Be. Like Jesus.” They even had a theme song that we sang each day! The students seemed engaged and eager to receive God’s word. Speakers from Australia and other parts of Indonesia gave breakout seminars on topics related to evangelism and missions. I also participated in a Q&A with the students where they asked questions about life and ministry.

The Jaffray Makassar School of Theological Philosophy was founded in 1932 by Dr. Robert A. Jaffray, a Canadian missionary. It has 460 students, and its mission remains unchanged from its founding. They seek to carry out Christ’s Great Commission to the world for the glory of God. During this missions fest, the students rehearsed how the gospel first came to each of the regions and tribes of Indonesia and prayed for its continued spread to the ends of the earth. Be encouraged that fellow believers half-way around the world share our same ambition to spread a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ!

It was a joy to spend time with Blake and Melody Walburg and their five children in Makassar City in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Blake serves by teaching Bible and theology at the school and also leading an evangelism team through their local church and sending organization. Melody homeschools their five children and cares for their home. It was sweet to see how they are serving Christ in a very different context. Pray for faithful and fruitful ministry as they continue to raise children, teach and disciple students at the school, coordinate evangelism teams to the community, and prayerfully ponder the future.

I’m pictured here with the president of the school, Dr. Robi Panggarra. He was a gracious host who expressed his thanks to you, The North Church, for allowing me to go and serve their school and students. I also met several missionaries from the US who are serving at the school and in the region through evangelism, church planting, and other ministries to strengthen the local church and mobilize local believers to go to the unreached and unengaged. Pray for the hallowing of God’s name in Indonesia and beyond.

Again, thank you for your prayers! It was a sweet opportunity to be joined by my daughter and to see the Lord’s work among the nations. We should be greatly encouraged by a school that is magnifying Christ in all of life in a country that is a Muslim majority (~75%). Nonetheless, they serve as bold and courageous witnesses for Christ. May we do the same here as we serve as salt and light to our neighbors and the broader community.

I look forward to gathering together as a church family this Sunday as we continue our series in Matthew and steadily approach Good Friday and the celebration of Christ’s glorious resurrection on Easter Sunday. May we never tire of celebrating that Christ is risen and that he’s coming again! We have much to celebrate and to be thankful for. Prayerfully consider who you might invite to our upcoming Good Friday and Easter services.

With thanksgiving,

Pastor Steven
