Preparing for Easter

Dear North Church,

As we prepare for Easter, we slowly move towards a timeless celebration of the heart of our faith. These are things of “first importance,” that Christ died, was buried, and was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures (1 Cor 15:3–4). This doesn’t mean other things are unimportant, but that the testimony of Jesus’ resurrection is the most important.

Paul argues in 1 Corinthians 15 that if Christ has not been raised from the dead, the implications are terrible for believers. If there is no resurrection—as the Sadducees argued—then our faith is in vain, preaching is in vain, we misrepresent God as liars, we are still in our sins, those who have died will not rise again to life, and there is fundamentally no hope in this life or the one to come (1 Cor 15:12–19).

But the glorious celebration of Easter is this: Christ is risen! The resurrection is at the very heart of our faith. It’s the foundation—without it, everything collapses. If it didn’t happen, then we have wasted our lives. Yet, the resurrection did happen. There were over five hundred witnesses. The disciples never recanted. They were willing to die for their beliefs and testimony. And we now celebrate this glorious reality, that Christ is risen from the dead.

So what are the implications of the resurrection being true and real? Here are just a few. Death now has no victory. Death no longer has the final word. Death, for believers, becomes a doorway to eternity with God and Christ. We do not grieve as those who have no hope.

We are justified. Our sins have been forgiven. The payment for our sins was accepted. The resurrection vindicates Jesus and confirms that his sacrifice was accepted and all-sufficient for his people. We now walk as those who are simultaneously sinners and saints, those who are God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved (Col 3:12). Our identities are now in Christ.

And we can go on. We have new life. God sanctifies us by his Spirit. We have hope for the future. We have a mission to spread this good news. Our suffering is not meaningless, but is producing in us greater holiness and longing for life with God forever.

As Easter approaches, may our hearts be full of great hope because Christ has indeed risen from the dead. Despite the challenges in our world and in each of our lives, we have an enduring hope because right now, Christ is alive, seated at the right hand of the Father, ruling and reigning on high. And someday, he will return, coming on the clouds, to make all things right once again. Maranatha, come Lord, come quickly!

With hope,

Pastor Steven
