Divine Appointments

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision
Dear North Church,
I recently taught a workshop on how to have spiritual conversations. It reminded me of an experience I had several years ago. I was at a shelter, seated at a table of homeless men and women who had just been served dinner. After they finished, they would sleep on mattress pads and then leave by 7am the next morning. As I sat down, I realized I had very little in common with these men and women. I asked them if I could share a story about a harrowing experience that I had. After telling the story, I shared that it was a moment of crisis and despair. I asked if any of them could relate.
Many of them could, and some even shared their own stories of facing crisis. I ended up talking for more than an hour with one man. We talked about what his tattoos meant and the circumstances around why he got them. We talked about his life prior to homelessness. He owned nice cars, drove a garbage truck, and was married with twins. He was now divorced, estranged from his children, and recently sober. From there, we got to talking about what sustains him and gives him hope in the midst of all of these difficulties. Then we got to the topic of Jesus. He had heard of him but didn’t know anything about him.
Throughout the evening, I shared the gospel with him. I shared an overview of the Bible. I gave him a Bible and told him how it all fit together. Near the end of the night, he professed faith and said he’d read the Bible I had given him. Then he said something to this effect: “I think God sent you here tonight so that I could hear this message.” I agreed. It was a divine appointment neither of us expected.
This story reminds me that God is always working, orchestrating opportunities, opening doors, and placing people in our lives who are primed and ready to hear about Jesus. With that in view, let me encourage us to pray for specific people in our lives (e.g., neighbors, coworkers, classmates, family) and for opportunities to engage in spiritual conversations.
Some of you may want to consider participating in a National Night Out or Nite to Unite gathering in your neighborhood. That takes place on Tuesday, August 5, and you can find out more here. You’re also invited to join Pastor Jason on Sunday, August 3, for a National Night Out Exchange event, to discuss how to strategically build relationships with neighbors to share Christ through the National Night Out initiative.
Whatever we do, may we be on the lookout for the lost. May we see unbelievers with the eyes and attitude of Christ—with compassion. And may we be ready to speak truth to those who are desperately longing for meaning and hope.
In Christ,
Pastor Steven
