An Important Security Update

Steven Lee

Pastor for Preaching & Vision

Dear North Church,

I wanted to share an important security update with you. Beginning Sunday, July 5, we will have a uniformed police officer and a marked squad car present on Sunday mornings. This is a proactive security measure that the elders, in consultation with Jon Hedger, our Director for Security & Safety, have decided to take to deter potential threats and help provide a safe environment for worship, ministry, and fellowship.

Churches today face a wide range of security concerns. On August 27, 2025, a mass shooting occurred at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, where two children were killed, and 28 others were injured. Then, on January 18, 2026, an anti-ICE mob stormed inside Cities Church in St. Paul, interrupting the worship service. While we don’t anticipate any protesters or attackers, we want to take reasonable precautions to protect our congregants.

In response to the protesters, on January 20, 2026, I sent an email to the congregation informing you of the new door-locking precautions we had begun implementing. We want to remain a welcoming place for those coming to worship and encounter the life-changing message of the gospel. And we want to deter any potential nefarious actors that seek to undermine our gathered worship.

We continue to trust God with our safety, knowing that he is sovereign and in control. Do not be nervous or anxious when coming to church. God is seated on his throne, unfolding his good and glorious plan of redemption. Yet, trusting God and exercising wisdom are not mutually exclusive. We wholeheartedly believe that God is our refuge and protector, and we take prudent steps to protect those entrusted to our care.

We trust the Lord and use seat belts, smoke detectors, insurance, and lock our doors at night. We hold trust and prudence together: “The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord” (Prov 21:31). Or Nehemiah’s example reveals trust and practical wisdom: “We prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night” (Neh 4:9). We believe that trusting God and reasonable security precautions are not at odds, but an expression of faithful stewardship.

I also want to clearly state that the presence of an officer does not mean that we are presently aware of any specific threats against our church. Nor is this a response to a particular incident, but rather an ongoing preventative measure. This is not a fear-based response but rather an act of faith, with prayer, where we ultimately entrust our safety to God.

Feel free to warmly greet the officer and help your kids familiarize themselves as well. We are thankful for our ongoing relationship with the Mounds View Police Department and their willingness to partner with us as we request their ongoing presence on Sundays. If you have any questions about this, feel free to contact Director for Security & Safety, Jon Hedger, or Pastor Jason Vaden.

With thanksgiving,

Pastor Steven
