All Things New

Dear North Church,

I find a certain measure of joy from taking something broken and in disrepair and fixing it to make it work once again. I have recently had to fix a refrigerator, troubleshoot some old plumbing, and replace an air conditioner fuse. Each of these fixes took what was not working and brought it back to life.

There is something satisfying about restoring something to working condition. There is a reason some people intentionally buy old cars to restore them to their former glory. Some people go out of their way to buy antiques that possess a certain charm and character.

We see this principle in the Scriptures as well. God does not “factory reset” humanity or the earth every couple of millennia. After the flood in Exodus, God promises never to destroy all life like that ever again. Instead, God is right now restoring all things through the work of the gospel. In Revelation 21:5, Jesus declares, “Behold, I am making all things new.”

He takes hearts of stone and replaces them with hearts of flesh. He takes sorrow and turns it into joy. He redeems and reconciles sinners by his grace. He takes tragedy and uses it to reveal his provision, glory, and grace. He is working in and through the hardships of life. He takes uncertainty and uses it to build in us trust, dependence, and prayer.

God reminds us that he is presently, powerfully, and actively at work in our lives. He reveals his goodness, provision, and kindness. God does not look at our broken and fractured world, longing to hit “reset.” He is not wishing he could throw it all away in place of something new. Instead, he is unfolding his glorious plan of redemption. The gospel is transforming lives. His grace is saving sinners. His kindness is drawing more to repentance. His mercy is manifest to those in great need.

The Lord is working. He is active. He has not left us to ourselves nor has he abandoned us. So be encouraged as we move into this summer season, that God is making all things new. He uses us to share this good news with the lost. He is reconciling all things to himself. He gives and he takes away. He draws near and he works by his grace.

So in the same way that I love to fix something to make it work once again, God takes the chaos and challenges of our world to reveal the unfolding work of grace he is accomplishing in this world. So take heart. The Lord Jesus Christ declares, “Behold, I am making all things new” (Rev 21:5).

With hope,

Pastor Steven
