Oaks of Righteousness

Listen on

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision

22Well this morning we're studying Isaiah 61. We're in the middle of a three week break. We finished Genesis that took us about a year to get through that. We're gonna start Matthew in two weeks. And so this morning we're looking at Isaiah 61. And you may be wondering why this chapter in this book at this time, if you've been around, you know that we've used the phrase, oaks of righteousness to capture my aspiration for the north church here in this particular season. I long for every single person and even those watching online to be established as massive oak trees whose roots go deep into God and into his word.

11I want us to be Psalm one, people who bear their fruit in season and whose leaves do not wither that when the winds of culture blow that we would be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that our labor in the Lord is not in vain. And then when you gather all those trees together, what do they become? A, a garden city, a forest, and the neighbors and the nations might find shade and shelter, refuge and respite in the north church, in us as a people. And all of that I have captured in the phrase oaks of righteousness, which is why we're preaching Isaiah 61. 'cause it's the only time that phrase appears in the Bible.

59So would you join me now as I pray? Father in heaven, would you be pleased to glorify your son and to illuminate our minds and hearts to behold the wonder of who you are and what you're doing right now in our world? Help us. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. Back in July, many of you know there was the Republican national convention that was held in Milwaukee and just last week the Democratic National Convention was held in Chicago. And I'm not gonna talk a lot about politics, but these two parties could not be more polarized. But what they have in common is that they are both setting forth a grand vision for your life, for this country and for the future.

58I didn't watch any of it because I find it to be mostly ridiculous, but I read all sorts of notable quotes for this illustration. So here are some of the things that were said in the various speeches at both of these conventions. We can heal the wounds that divide us. We can heal a planet in peril or America hope is making a comeback or I hope you will support me in the future because I will bring back the American dream. The discord and division in our society must be healed and we must heal it quickly. And lastly, I want you to know, I promise to be a president for all Americans. I don't know about you, but I don't have much hope in politicians fixing our world, fixing our country.

53They have as good of a hope of uniting this country as convincing Minnesotans to not talk about the weather or, or to get you if you go to the fair to not eat way too many fried things, right? It, it's just not going to happen. We know that most of these words, probably all of these words ring hollow. The truth is we need politicians who fear God, which we do not have. Our world is divided, it's fractured, it's broken, and we do not look to politicians to fix the future. And in fact, we don't need to look to politicians to fix the future. We already have a grand vision for our world. And that grand vision is Isaiah 61 this morning.

41It's one of the most amazing chapters in the Bible. You, you should put it right up there on your, you know, route, roar, uh, of chapters of the Bible with Romans eight and Philippians two and Colossians one and and whatever else Isaiah 53. Let me just give us a little context if you've not studied Isaiah. Isaiah is the first of three major prophets in the Old Testament. In the book of Isaiah describes judgment for Israel and then judgment for the nations around them and kind of sprinkled throughout are these kind of glimmers of hope that we often go to at advent. It also details Jerusalem's fall and then hope in the midst of exile.

22And then it talks about the suffering servant. And then it concludes right at the end there, chapters 56 to 66, those 10 chapters there of a restored world where all the wrongs are made right? And our chapter Isaiah, Isaiah 61 sits right at the center of that. And it's this vision of this restored world. It speaks 700 years before Jesus about Jesus and it would ultimately be fulfilled in Jesus. This anointed one will usher in God's new creation. And my aim this morning is to remind us of the glorious calling that we have as God's people in the midst of this broken and sin marred world. We have been given marching orders and we have been given a glorious vision.

14So we are now to walk in it, but we can't walk in something that we don't see rightly, which is why we're studying this chapter. We are oaks of righteousness in this desert wasteland and we are to provide beauty and shade and shelter for the glory of Christ. So I, I'm gonna move through this in three parts, the grand vision of Isaiah 61. So we're gonna walk through the chapter then Jesus' fulfillment of Isaiah 61, how, how does this point to Christ? And then how we live out Isaiah 61, the application if you will. Now in the grand vision of Isaiah 61, the, the chapter itself can be separated into kind of three sections.

59There's this beginning, middle, and end beginnings, these first three verses. And this grand vision begins with this unidentified speaker. And in verse one it says, look with me in your bibles, the spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me. This word anointed in Hebrew, it's AK is where we get the word Messiah or chosen one. God directs and empowers this anointed one by the Holy Spirit to do and to speak and to act for him. Now what is he to do? This is where we see this grand vision unfolded in these first three verses, follow along as I point out the seven acts of new creation.

43The first is to bring good news to the poor. Second, bind up the broken hearted. Third, proclaim liberty to the captives. In other words, to open the prison to the bound. Number four, proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, which is also known as the day of vengeance. Number five, comfort all who mourn. Number six, grant those who mourn a beautiful headdress. And finally number seven, to exchange mourning for the oil of gladness or a faint spirit for the garment of praise. What are those seven things trying to say? The thrust of those seven things is that this anointed one is coming to preach good news and renewal.

34Everything that is wrong is now going to be made right. All those who are contrite and lowly and suffering and oppressed and discouraged and despondent and brokenhearted are going to hear the preaching of this anointed one. And they're gonna say, that's good news. What he's saying right there. That's what we need. This chosen one is going to undo all of the brokenness in our world. That's the grand vision that's being put before us. One could summarize it as everything wrong is going to be made right Once again. Now, if we look forward in the New Testament, we know that this is not referring to literal prisoners which Jesus never set free or just those who were economically impoverished, but rather he, he has all the people in view of that are marginalizing excluded who look to God for help, including Jesus disciples, the poor, the broken hearted, the captives, all those who are spiritually captive to Satan and imprisoned by sin.

42This grand vision of renewal points to God's glorious plan of redemption and salvation that Jesus would usher in. Now look with me at verse two. It says to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. What is that? Uh, I think what he's doing there is he's referring back all the way to Leviticus 25 where it describes the rules around the year of Jubilee. And if you don't remember what the year of Jubilee is, but it happened every 50 years or so after 49 years, seven times seven, the 50th year would be the year of Jubilee. And that's when ancestral lands would be returned. All your depths would be forgiven, slaves and prisoners would be set free.

29You would get a fresh start. It it, it's like back in the day when we, we used to have computers that would kind of slow down and start lagging. We would do something called defragging it and none of you, some of you remember this and then if it wouldn't work, what would you ultimately do? You would do a factory reset. You could do that on your iPhone, right? You do a factory reset, you kind of set it to where it began. Once again, that's the picture that we have here. The year of Jubilee is like factory resetting the economy. No more debt lands returned. Indentured servitude, servants, excuse me, are set free.

06But this is also called the day of the vengeance of our God. It means that when God is setting everything right, those who benefit from oppression will experience this jubilee as judgment rather than restoration. All the wrongs are going to be made right and wrongdoers will be repaid. Now verses two and three, picture this exchanging of mourning, which is mentioned three different times for celebratory clothes. It's like you're trading in your funeral garments for wedding clothes. These garments of praise, the oil of gladness, a beautiful headdress. What what's happening here in this grand vision that Jesus is ushering in ashes are being turned to beauty.

55Not just that you, you're gonna find comfort in the midst of grieving, but in fact he will take the very ashes of the ruins of this world and make it beautiful. God is bringing about restoration and renewal and recreation. All that is wrong is going to be made right once again. And notice all of the purpose of this restoration, renewal in verse three, that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord that he may be glorified. God's salvation is breaking into our world, establishing his people as permanent fixtures in his land and were planted by God in order to glorify him.

41So this grand vision of the future begins with God's anointed one to make everything that is wrong, right? Once again, this picture is of recreation or renewal. Now we move to the middle section verses four to nine. Look at verse four. They it's referring to God's people. These plantings shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up former devastations, thus they shall repair ruin cities the devastations of many generations. Notice the overlap of all those different words. Build, raise up, repair God's people are to rebuild these ruins that they can be habitable once again. Now this is poetic language.

26This is a poem, so I don't think it's corresponding to any specific war or ruins or cities, but rather it captures this broad general idea that everything that Satan has destroyed is now going to be made right? Once again, everything ruined by sin is gonna be reestablished and renewed and made right? There's this new era of history that is being ushered in by God. Now look with me at verses five and six, strangers shall stand in 10 flocks. This section gets to be a little bit unusual. It, it's not completely obvious what's taking place. Foreigners shall be your plowman and vine dressers, but you shall be called the priests of the Lord.

09They shall speak of you as the ministers of our God. You shall eat the wealth of the nations and in their glory you shall boast. What does that section mean? It it describes this role reversal that's going to take place instead of Israel being enslaved by the nations around them, where they bring tribute, they get heavily taxed to all these foreign nations. Instead, strangers shall tend your flocks. Foreigners shall be your plowman. Now, does this mean that Israel has conquered these foreign nations? I I don't think that's what is in view that these foreign nations actually come voluntary because God's people will be priests.

50You see that in verse six. You shall be called priests of the Lord. They shall speak of you as the ministers of our God. So in the same way, the 12 tribes of Israel, the the Levites, the priests, they were not given any land to to manage, but all the other nations around them would give to the Levites and the Levites would serve as priests. He's saying God's people are gonna serve this way. All, all the nations around you are gonna come joyfully, gladly bring you tribute because you are gonna minister to them. God's presence, God's blessing. That's who you will be as a people, priests of our God, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.

33And then verse seven, instead of shame, there shall be a double portion. Instead of dishonor, you shall rejoice. You'll possess a double portion. They shall have everlasting joy. Uh, the blessings just keep, keep getting kind of heaped. More and more double blessing, double portion, double inheritance, shame and honor will become everlasting. Joy. This is again casting forward, this grand vision of what God is doing in his world. All that is broken is going to be made right. Once again, he's not just gonna restore what you had, he's gonna double it. He's gonna make it even better. That's the grand vision of the world where we're headed.

18Amen. Now verse eight and nine reminds us of God's love of justice, his hatred of robbery and wrong, and how he's going to establish his everlasting covenant with his people. God will fulfill his promise to his people with the covenant that he made that we saw all throughout this series in Genesis, Abraham or Genesis 12, covenant made with Abraham to use his offspring to be a blessing to all the nations that are around him. The nations will see the unique relationship that Israel has with God and now the church has with God and they will recognize his mighty work among them and give him glory.

06So this middle section of this grand vision envisions God's people as builders and as priests. So we've seen trees, we've seen builders, and we've seen priests. The nations are to look in and see this unique role God's people have in his kingdom. And then we come now to the end in verses 10 and 11. It concludes with rejoicing. Rejoicing in what God is doing in the Lord. Verse 10, the anointed one greatly rejoices in Yahweh because he's clothed him in garments of salvation and a robe of righteousness. What does that mean? Well, to clothe someone in garments means they've been empowered to accomplish the task and they've been given the authority for the task.

58If you wear a police officer's uniform and you have the badge, it means you have the authority that that uniform conveys and that badge conveys at graduation. Some of you had some graduations, you wear the goofy hat and the big robe to signify that you now have these academic credentials. If you do martial arts and you have the black belt, it means you are an expert. There's a certain level of authority. Back in Genesis, Joseph was given pharaoh's rings, robes, chain, and chariot. It was to say Joseph has the power, has the power and the authority of Pharaoh himself. And here the anointed one wears the garment of salvation and the robe of righteousness.

47What does that mean? That Jesus has been given all authority over heaven and earth, that whoever comes to him, he grants salvation and he gives righteousness. This is that grand vision of where all of human history is headed. This anointed one is decked out with the glory of a bride and groom. You see how he talks about that the most expensive clothes that you probably will ever wear or have already worn was probably at your wedding. Women wear the finest dress. Men, we just wear what we're told to wear. But women, they wear really nice dresses, really nice jewelry guys. You even put on some good shoes at that point, right?

36The anointed one is clothed by God in the finest of apparel, namely the authority to grant salvation and forgiveness. That's what he's clothed in. And at the end here in verse 11, we get this kind of sprouting garden imagery for as the earth brings forth its sprouts as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations. I think this is hearkening back to verse three, where we are plantings of the Lord, oaks of righteousness. But now God is going to cause not just normal fruit to spring forth, but it's righteousness, it's praise.

18God is ushering in this plan of redemption so that what is sprouted forth is righteousness and praise to the glory of his grace. And verse 11 is not just of this newly planted garden, but what's the picture of revelation? It's a restored, renewed, bigger and better garden of Eden. That's where we're headed. Revelation 22, 1 and two describes this new creation with a river that runs through it. Trees on either side that bears fruit and its leaves Were for the healing of the nations. God is rebuilding Eden through his people, the plantings of the Lord so that we would be these oaks of righteousness that dwell in his new heaven and new earth.

09So that's the grand vision of Isaiah 61, new creation, renewal, salvation God's people as trees and builders and priests. Now we, we move to part two, Jesus fulfillment of Isaiah 61. Many of you probably know this, some of you don't. But if you don't turn with me to Luke four, actually every, all of you turn with me to Luke four. The anointed one in Isaiah 61 is none other than Jesus. We know this because scripture interprets scripture and Luke tells us that Isaiah 61 is a messianic passage. So Luke chapter four, and we'll read in verse 16, all the way to 21. This happens right after Jesus' baptism, his temptation in the wilderness.

59He's about to start his ministry. And then Luke four verse 16 says, and Jesus came to Nazareth where he had been brought up and as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day and he stood up to read verse 17. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He enrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written. The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

42And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, today, this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. This is Jesus' mic drop moment. If I were to continue reading, the people would eventually be filled with wrath against Jesus. This is the hometown boy. This is Joseph's son. How dare he say what I think He's saying that he's the anointed one. He's the one endowed by the spirit. He's the one ushering in God's kingdom and they try to throw him off a cliff. Jesus is indeed claiming to be the anointed one, the one endowed with the spirit, the one ushering in new creation to bring about salvation and righteousness.

41As CS Lewis famously said, he is either a liar, a lunatic, or he is Lord. Who does Jesus think he is? Jesus claims in no uncertain terms that he is the Messiah and the rest of Luke and all the gospels which we'll see in Matthew as we start preaching through it point and confirm that fact. Yes, he is indeed this anointed one endowed with the Spirit who speaks and acts for God because he is God in the flesh. He is Emmanuel God with us. Notice where Jesus stopped reading. What does he not say in the exact next line of Isaiah 61? He does not read the day of vengeance of our God. Jesus began his mission, but it has not been fully finished or consummated.

44The primary mission that he gave to his church is to bring about salvation. John three 17, Jesus himself says, for God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. So Jesus would come to usher in God's grand vision of this new heaven, new earth, this new kingdom that would come, but we're living in the already. And yet there's portions that are not yet like the vengeance, the justice of God being poured out the wrath of God. And so even this morning for some of you or some who are watching, who are not trusting in Jesus, our desire is that you would surrender to Christ.

32Today can be the day of salvation. You can become a planting of the Lord if you surrender to him, confess your sins and recognize your deep and profound need for Jesus that you've been living your own way and you can't figure out a way to this grand vision yourself. You don't have the instructions, you don't have the wherewithal, you don't have the ability. Don't put your hope in politics or technology or anything else in our world. There's so many people do that. And it's like getting on a rollercoaster, hoping that it's gonna take you to a new destination. You're just gonna go in a circle and then you're gonna end up more nauseous than when you began.

16The grand vision of Isaiah 61 is that salvation has come and we're living in it right now. Jesus said in your hearing, this scripture has been fulfilled. I have begun this work of ushering in this kingdom. If you're brokenhearted, come to Jesus and he will give you comfort. He will call you to cast off everything. You will lose everything in the process and you will gain everything in the process as well. And more hope has arrived in the person and work of Jesus. The main point of our passage this morning is that God is doing a new work and he's already begun that work and he includes us in that work as well.

11He ushers in this new kingdom, new creation. He's renewing and rebuilding the ruins of our world through the plantings of his people. Revelation 21, 5, Jesus says, behold, I am making all things new. And he's doing that right now in and through the church. So I'm gonna move to part three. How do we live out Isaiah 61? Now I have two applications for us, two ways I want us to live in light of this, rejoice and rebuild, rejoice and rebuild. The first is rejoice in your salvation marvel and rejoice in the salvation that you have received in Christ. If you're poor and needy, brokenhearted and mourning weighed down by this world, so often we walk through our lives just so overwhelmed, crushed by cynicism.

17You watch what's going on in your world and you're like, they're, they're not gonna fix our country. There's no hope there. There are wars raging everywhere, and yet we have this grand vision of what God is doing. And you can rejoice in your salvation. Christ has come and Christ is coming again. Christ has come to make all things new. You are right now, living in the year of the Lord's favor factory reset on our hearts so that we can delight in Christ once again. This work has begun right now and it will surely come to pass. And so if you're in Christ, you are his oak of righteousness. You're planted in his garden and you will bear fruit, the fruit of righteousness and of praise.

14Therefore, one of the things we should do is the very thing that we've been designed to do, which is to praise the Lord, delight yourself in him. Even this week, I, I felt anxious as I was preparing this sermon and I didn't know why. There, there was no specific reason. And so I was praying Psalm 51 12, restore to me the joy of my salvation and uphold with me. Uphold me with a willing spirit or Nehemiah eight 10, the joy of the Lord is your strength. If you lack strength, if you lack hope, if you lack clarity about the future, if, if you just feel so burdened about what's going on in your family, in your own life and the world around us.

10And we rightly feel burdened, rejoice again in what God is doing and what he has already began in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is reality. What everyone says out there is not truly reflective of what is going on. Isaiah 61 is what is true and right and is going on in our world right now. Fight the fight of faith in our rejoicing. And so some of us, we need to fight for this joy day in and day out like George Mueller every morning. His main job was to find his joy in God. That was the first thing he had to attend to before he did anything else. Make my soul happy in Jesus. And we need to pray that way this morning.

00Secondly, we are to rebuild the ruins. Rebuild the ruins. If you look out in our world, there are ruins everywhere. Uh, I was doing some looking babies born in the US to unmarried mothers has gone from 5% in 1960 to nearly 50% today. Birth rates are down, homelessness is an epidemic. Mental illness and addiction are epidemics in most of our urban centers and in our rural areas as well. Human trafficking is pervasive. Pornography flourishes not only in the dark corners of our society anymore, but it's in the mainstream. There are wars raging overseas. Our world groans under the weight of sin. Uh, an example of this is at the Democratic National Convention, planned Parenthood Parks, its mobile bus out front and they give out Opry stone and the other drug I can't pronounce, so that people could have medical medication induced abortions right there.

08So come celebrate our grand vision of the world and kill your baby in the process. You may think, what can I possibly do about all of these massive problems going on in our world? And j just the mention of rebuild the ruins feels paralyzing. Pastor, I get it. Some of you may be wondering, is the world supposed to get better and better until Christ returns or is it getting worse and worse? And so maybe we just let it get worse, and that's a bigger question for another time. But what I know without a doubt is this, Jesus Christ rules and reigns from on high right now. Amen. His power extends out over all of this earth.

57There is not a corner of our universe where Jesus doesn't look at it and say, that's mine. I wanna bring comfort and peace and hope and love to all those broken people and all of these broken corners of our society. I have come in power by my grace, by my love to pour this out. And I'm using my people, the plantings of the Lord, these oaks of righteousness. To bring that about the gospel is advancing and saving souls. And nothing, nothing, nothing can stop the advance of Christ's church until it reaches all of the nations, all of our neighbors into the very ends of the earth. Every knee will bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth.

46And every tongue will confess. Jesus Christ is Lord either willingly or under condemnation and under his hand of wrath. And so when I say rebuild the ruins, I don't mean go out and fix the world. What I mean is begin planting those little oak trees and start with what do they grow from Acorns, right? Start with the acorn. It begins as a sprout, a twig over years and years and decades. And so in the same way we begin with the building block of society, namely the family. What you do in helping cultivate strong God-fearing families, discipling this next generation, mentoring a younger person, pouring out your life and your energy and your riches in the church is going to bear fruit for all eternity.

42I believe this with all of my heart. If I did not believe this, I would quit my job and go do something else. It's just not worth it. There's just too many sinners in the church. There's too many problems going on. But if this is God's vehicle to bring global transformation and God's church cannot, will not fail, Satan himself cannot withstand the onslaught of God's people, then there's nothing greater to give your life to. And so what does this look like? It it means raising kids that love Jesus. It means serving in our children's ministry. It means being a godly father that puts off the riches and climbing the ladder so that you could focus on the things that matter.

28It's being mothers that are content that see their work as valuable, truly valuable in Mongolia. I think it's the king gives a mother a second tier prize if she has four or more children, and then she gives them the first tier prize if they have six or more children. And, and the idea there is they're trying to raise the birth rates and, and to convey that actually having children is one of the most glorious things that you can do. Uh, I believe with all my heart, and we've talked about this with Aaron and our pastoral staff, that the next Hudson Taylor, the next Amy Carmichael, the next John Piper is here in our church among our children.

10And we have a chance to raise them up so that they would look back and say, oh, I grew up in this church where people were not perfect, but oh, they loved Jesus. And people showed me Christ week in and week out. Uh, I was noticing that on Wednesday, if you were at the park, four of the six people who were leading us in worship were homegrown people from the North Church, Bethlehem, the kids that had grown up here, gone through our middle school and high school ministry who now love Jesus, who were serving us and leading us in worship. And so I want to call many of us to consider partnering with us in rebuilding the ruins of our world by laying a foundation for our children and youth.

54It doesn't mean you have to serve in a formal way. It may mean that we, if you need five more people, as you heard earlier, if you can't serve, pray, pray with us. That's something that we can all do. And that's something that some of you will only do. We, we, we've run the numbers. We have 700 young people, infant through 18 that come to this church, 700 pray that they would make a disproportionate impact on the Twin cities and in our world and in all the Fortune 500 companies and in the home and among the nations. So rebuilding the ruins means serving and praying and giving to advance Christ's work as we live as builders and trees and priests in our neighborhoods and among the nations.

51We have been given a glorious calling here this morning. Glorious. We're not on the defensive. We're out there building trees, planting trees, excuse me, building buildings, rebuilding the ruins. And God is going to get glory from those labors. We don't have to fix the world. God's doing that already. Jesus is at the helm. What we get to do is do our part. And we don't do this alone. We need each other. You've seen those pictures where there's a tree kind of standing all by itself on the top of a mountain, and there's a certain kind of minimalistic beauty about it, right? Like, wow, this one tree out of nowhere springs up out of this rock or whatever it is.

44But that's not what we're called to do. We are oaks of righteousness. The Isaiah pictures as being this garden or forest so that we become shelter and shade for the world. So pray with me that the North Church would be a place of respite, a place of sanity amid chaos, a place of life and truth in a world of lies. And we're praying backstage. We're praying in the prayer room. What we want people to walk away from when they come here on a Sunday is not wow. The the music was really upbeat and loud. Oh man, they played such good games at Youth group. Oh, those smoke machines were off the charts. What do we want people to walk away from when they walk into this place?

35The spirit of God was there. Jesus was there. And we get to be that not just gathered here. When we gather, God is in our midst. Jesus is in our midst. We go out and we shine forth the light and the glory of Christ. Let's pray. Father, only you can do this work and you are doing this work. The spirit of the Lord is upon your son Jesus. And you are making all things new. You are restoring our world, making all that is wrong, right? Once again. And so help us this morning to be those who rejoice in the Lord afresh and again for some for the first time. And that we would put our hands to the plow in praying and serving and giving so that we might repair the ruins of this world.

37Oh, that we would be shade and shelter, refuge and respite for a needy world, for the nations and for our neighbors. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.
