00(instrumental music plays) Have you ever been needed to be convinced that a good gift that you received was actually good? You looked at it, you considered it, and you thought, "Okay." Or maybe it- it really was a good gift, but you just weren't sure. That happened to me on my 50th birthday. I was very satisfied with my Timex watch from the '90s. Indiglo was the greatest invention on Earth. 1992. It was really good. The whole la- back of the screen lit up. And my family w- was not satisfied for me in that, and they thought I should have a smart watch. Um, and they- they gave me one, and marketing had not yet caught up with me to see that I needed one, so they needed to do some extra work to convince me that this was a good gift. And it is a good gift.

20Please, please hear me rightly. It's a wonderful gift. Today is not about time pieces. It's about Christmas. And I think that same heart reluctance that I had upon opening that gift happens to us at Christmas. A few weeks ago, Pastor Steven mentioned in his sermon that familiarity breeds contempt. It does with Jesus, and how much more at Christmas. When we were singing songs just a few minutes ago, did any of you say, "I need more help to exalt in the newborn king? Help me, God, there's just- there's a lack there. I'm familiar with this. I know these songs. I need my heart to connect with these realities." Well, that's why we have this sermon series. We are looking at some of the most- the greatest realities. We're trying to help our brains connect with the baby in the manger to see that he is the prophet's, that he's the priest, that he is the king, that he is the savior, that he is the lamb of God.

34Now, for some of you, many of those categories make sense, although you might be scratching your head, "Jesus the high priest?" You might need a little bit more convincing that that aspect of Jesus' coming, his character, his ministry is really good and is really great. You might either need the cobwebs brushed out of your brain, or you may need a whole new category created for you. Jesus, the great high priest. That's where we're going this morning. And rather than jumping all over the Bible, God has provided us with a beautiful gift in the Book of Hebrews. Now, there's actually six chapters that focus and weave in and out of this high priest.

2417 times that's mentioned and talked about in those chapters. And we're only gonna look today at a half a chapter. It's packed, it's glorious, and there's so much more. So as we look at this, you may wanna say, "Ha, maybe in the next couple days and weeks, I need to spend some more time in Hebrews to see more about this great high priest." Our outline is going to be very simple. I'm actually gonna back up and read for you a little bit more of the chapter than what was read, but if we'd read the whole thing, it may have been a little tricky. So I'm gonna try to read it with some explanation, and then we're gonna get to the text that was just read for you.

03But our points are very simple. Point number one, why do God's people need a high priest? And we're gonna look at Hebrews 9:1-8 very quickly to help us understand that. Then we're gonna move on to how did the Old Testament priests' ministry fall short? What was lacking? Why do we need a great high priest? There were several high priests. Why do we need a great one? Which is also really important for our hearts. And finally, why is Jesus, the long-awaited Great, probably you could capitalize every one of those letters in Great, magnify them to a really large font, the Great High Priest. Why is Jesus that?

51We need help to get our minds around that, so before we dive in to this text, please pray with me. Oh great God, your word says great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. And so would you help us to start to plumb the initial parts of the depths of the unsearchable realities of our great God, our great high priest? Would you help me to communicate this clearly? Would you help us to lock in and to start to see some of these things? Would your word revive our hearts? The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. Would you revive our souls this Christmas through your word as we just keep looking at different aspects of your greatness?

48We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. So keep your Bibles open or open them again to Hebrews 9, and we're gonna scan back up and begin at verse one. Our aim initially right here is, why do we need a high priest? Why do we need a high priest? I'm gonna read and comment, and read and comment a little bit in this section. There's two things... Hebrews is, is a great book and it banks all on the Old Testament, and we just dive in and we are running, moving at 65 miles an hour here. So, I'll try to help us catch up. Hebrews 9:1 says, "Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness."

32Those are two hangers for you to put your mental thoughts on, and what he's talking about in the old covenant is when God brought his people out of Egypt in the book of Exodus, he made a covenant with them. And there was two things in that covenant; there were regulations for worship, that's a hanger number one for your thinking, and secondly, an earthly place of holiness. Okay? And he's gonna explain what that is right now. So, if you're wondering, "What is that?" Here we go. Hebrews 9 verse two, "For a tent was prepared." Now what you need to understand is God has been eager to dwell with his people from the very beginning.

22If you were to look at my bible as an illustration, the first couple chapters was the garden, God was dwelling with his people. The last two chapters of Revelation are God dwelling with his people forever, those that he's sanctified and redeemed. And because of sin, in Genesis 3 right off the bat, Adam and all of us fell. We were banished from God's presence, and the whole major chunk of the bible is God's rescue mission to bring us back into his presence. And Exodus advances that story in a really significant way. You see, God saved his people, made a covenant with them descending on Mount Sinai and it...

10The place was just burning up. The whole mountain was filled with smoke as God moved into the area, moved onto the mountain. And in chapter 25 of Exodus, God says that he is going to move into the neighborhood. He's going to dwell in a tent. He's gonna be amongst his people. Now you, you need to grasp how big this is. As I was preparing, I have a window in my office and I look at my neighbor's house, um, when I look out my window, that's mostly what I see. And I thought to myself, "Imagine if God moved next door." And my heart was like, "Ooh!" The holy, awesome God wanted to dwell amongst sinful people, and he chose an earthly place of holiness, a tent. The transcendent, holy God is separate from s- sinful humanity in every way; morally pure, righteous, holy in his knowledge. The great God who descended on the mountain in fire was the same God that wanted to move just a stone's throw away from s- from sinful people. Have you been in a tent before?

28There's not much fabric separating you from the people in the next campsite. God wanted to dwell amongst his people in all of his great holiness. What he goes on to do, and our video people are gonna help put a picture up on the screen, the next section of the text helps us look at this tent and see aspects of it which are gonna help us in just a minute when we talk about Jesus' ha- high priestly ministry. Verse two says, "For a tent was prepared," the first section. So, what he's talking about is, you see the little high priest there, there's a cover, a curtain covering that completely, but it's removed so that we can see in. He would enter into that first room right by where he's standing facing ours, he would turn around and go in.

21"In which were the lampstands..." See if you can see that on the screen, especially you kids. "... And the table and the bread of the presence. It is called the holy place." So, there was like an outer room, a receiving room so to speak, a second room in which very significant priestly tasks were done in God's tent. And he's talking about the first section, he's gonna mention that a little bit more in a second. "Then behind the second curtain..." Now you also need to know that spans the whole back. A priest, and actually only one priest, would need to go through that curtain. This is the curtain in the bible where it says that the veil, or the curtain, was torn from top to bottom. This is the curtain that separates the holy place from the most holy place.

13Behind the second curtain was a second section called the most holy Place. "Having the golden altar of incense, the Arc of the Covenant covered it on all sides with gold. Above it," that is the arc, "were the Cherubim of gold-" you can maybe kind of make them out, "-overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail." So he's... The author is focusing our attention on this tent, and especially I want you to notice the words "above it." He doesn't say it here, but the person that knows their Old Testament would know that that was the throne of God. The book of Samuel, Samuel 4:4, is one of the places that mentions, "The Lord of hosts is enthroned on the cherubim."Okay? So amongst all the earth, we have this very small square room inside a tent where God's holiness dwells.

27God among his people. Just really quickly compare it, garden, free-flowing people and God, now after sin, a tent, and a small room in that tent. Why is the tabernacle important? It's important to know that this is the only location that God can dwell in his- amongst his people and he had very precise regulations in order for that to take place. We can read on but... and we will. The reason that God had priests was because God's people could not dwell with their holy God. Even the priest, if they did something wrong in God's presence would die. Yes. God's great holiness demands mediation. It demands help. It demands somebody going in there for us to make it possible.

39And that's where the text goes next. These preparations have thus been made. The... so once this tabernacle was built, the priest goes regularly into the first section. Those priests, plural, go regularly into the first section of performing their ritual duties. So they would go on a regular basis, but only a very small number of them would go in regularly. They would take care of the bread of the presence, they would tend to the lamps, they would burn incense which in the bible is often connected to prayer. Their ministry was in that first section. But if you look at verse 7, "But into the second..." remember that's the most holy place where God is enthroned above the cherubim where he chose to manifest his presence.

24He fills the universe, but he particularly made his presence known above the cherubim. Only the high priest goes. He and only, but once a year. Not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. Okay? There's gonna be pay off. Stay locked in with me. There's gonna be pay off for this in just a moment. Notice some of those details. In this holy place, only one person goes. Only once a year and he just can't waltz in there. He's gotta perform sacrifices. You can read more about them in Leviticus. And he has to actually bring the blood with him in to cleanse the alter, and it was not only just for him, it was for all the people. So just do a little math with me. God desires to dwell with his people.

23(laughs) Israel is only one nation on the planet at this time when this was taking place. Of all the nations, only one nation had only one person that could only go in there one day a year to do this. And they did this year after year after year after year. Is that gonna work? Is that gonna work to bring God's people into God's holy place to dwell with him forever? I may be getting slightly ahead of myself but let's first ta- start by talking about our own hearts. Are you pretty casual with God? Do you use his name casually? Do you sing about him casually? Do you have small thoughts about him?

17Or like the people that stood on Mount Sinai when it was burning up. They were like, "Whoa." Or like Isaiah who thought he would actually die when he had a vision of God's presence. Does God's holiness grip you? If God's holiness does not grip you, well, you will not see your need for a priest. How often do we just talk about heaven and going to heaven and, "I'm gonna get into heaven." The holy God dwells in heaven. That's what heaven is, forever with the Lord. We certainly can dwell there if we have Jesus as our high priest, but we shouldn't think casually about it. That's where God's presence dwells.

09Why do we need a priest? Because we can't do it on our own. We cannot live in the holy presence of God. We are desperately in need of help. The second section goes on to explain why we need this high priest. Thankfully, if, if you were to go back, but you don't need to turn there. Hebrews 5:1 says, "For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins." We need that. We can't even dwell in the same campground as God. We need it. So how did the Old Testament high priest ministry fall short? Look back at Hebrews 9:8 with me.

10"By this, the Holy Spirit is indicating that the way to the holy places is not yet opened."... as long as the first section is still standing, which is symbolic for the present age. Now there's some things that we might stumble over there. Really what he's saying, in really simple language, is because there was a tabernacle, it was painting a picture. Something is not right. We cannot enter into God's holy of holies. We cannot do that. This thing still standing, this ministry still taking place, shows us that something is not right. Throughout the centuries and throughout the years, high priests would go in and perform these rituals and it didn't change things, it didn't get any better. But even worse, some of our human high priests were no good at all. In one of the darkest seasons of Israel's history, when Samuel was just born and entering into the tabernacle at that time in Shiloh, Hophni and Phinehas were sinful, self-centered, self-focused priests. They interrupted God's people actually making sacrifices to God so they could take. They committed adultery with the people at the temple. It was very ugly.

37So it's not only that the priestly system didn't work, it's that sinful priests just don't cut it. And God gave one of the promises at that time that there would be a great high priest to come. 1 Samuel 2:35 says, "And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest." So when you think about Christmas, when you think about the baby in the manger, know that this was the inauguration of a faithful high priest ministry. 30 plus years of perfect living. "Who shall do according to what my heart, what is in my heart and mind. And I will build him a sure house and he shall go in and out before my anointed forever." No human priest did anything forever. And the beautiful thing about the way that God works is he is both the anointed, which we'll learn about next week, and he's the faithful priest.

37Jesus is amazing. Continuing with what fell short in the second half of verse 9 of Hebrews. "According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed till the time of reformation." If you're familiar with the Old Testament, there were all these regulations. People became unclean by touching a dead body and all sorts of other various things, and they needed washings and purifications but they only went skin deep. Have you realized that yet? Do you realize that you cannot clean yourself up? That there's something deeper?

24That there's something within your heart that cries out, "I need deeper cleansing?" Even King David, after he sinned in his heart and stole Bathsheba from Uriah, he cried out in so many different ways and said, "Purge me with hyssop. Cleanse me. I need something deeper." Why didn't he just say, "Well, I'm just gonna wait for the Day of Atonement and it's all gonna be taken care of"? Because that didn't take care of it. It didn't go deep enough. There's a problem with humanity that needs to go deeper. We have a heart need that needs to be cleansed. Do you see that yourself? When we baptize people, we say, "Are you now trusting in Jesus Christ alone?"

17And I think this is a really helpful time for us to examine, is that true of me? Am I actually exclusively trusting in Jesus' righteousness or am I smuggling in some of my own good works? Did I start relying on Jesus and now I'm kind of picking up the slack? Which is, there is no slack, but we can sinfully think that way. Or are we thinking, "I'm just doing my religious thing. I'm a good person. I'm better than my neighbor." No you're not. Is your heart pure? Do you not covet? Does your mouth which overflows your heart, is it perfect? Every word that you've ever said that reveals your heart, have they all been pure? There's only one that was true of and that was Jesus.

07That was Jesus. The ministry fell short because it could not bring people into God's presence and it could not affect our hearts. It could not change or transform our hearts. So now to the passages that was read for you. Why is Jesus the long awaited great high priest? Please look back at Hebrews 9:11 with me. "But when Christ appeared as the high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent, not made with hands, that is not of this creation, he entered once for all into the holy places. Not by means of the blood of goats and calves, but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption." We're gonna look a little carefully at some of these key phrases.

07First, note Christ appeared in order to bring about the good things that have come. Now he probably has in mind either the whole ministry or he's gonna move into the heavenly, um, into a heavenly picture of, of a tabernacle, which we'll talk about in just a second, so exactly how he appeared, it-We're not a hundred percent sure, it's probably a whole expansive thing, but I think at Christmas, we can see, we can look at the incarnation, the birth of Jesus and say, "The- the high priest has appeared of the good things that have come." And he lived a perfect life and died a sacrificial death, fulfilling his high priestly ministry. He has appeared, the good things that have come have appeared.

56Now, he's talking about a more perfect tent. If we're reading in the whole wider context of Hebrews, he's talking about a heavenly throne room. We hear in the Old Testament that Moses was supposed to exactly follow the instructions that God gave him for his tabernacle, his tent and the courtyard and the- the different furniture, and the sacrifices, because they are a shadow, they point to, or they're an imperfect look at true heavenly realities.

31And verse 12 is a phrase-by-phrase illustration of this ministry. Now I say the word illustration because I think we could say, "Wow, I didn't read about this. Like, so Jesus did something after he was on the cross? And he moved into heaven and brought blood and did these kind of things that this text is talking about?" I don't think so. Here's why I don't think that there actually is a heavenly throne room that Jesus brought his blood into. It's not like he suffered and died on the cross and then he brought his blood into heaven. I don't think it's that because as we read the historical account of Jesus' death, he says, "It is finished." And at that point, the curtain was rent, it was ripped. He provided the way in, it was finished, it was done. What the author of Hebrews is doing, and other commentators a- agree, thankfully I'm not on my own on this one, um, that- that this is a picture, he is overlaying the old with a picture of the new and just saying, "Look at all these amazing things that Jesus did."

46Notice, once for all. Once for all. You know, we oftentimes throw around the mic drop moment. I mean, can you imagine the lineage of year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year of the Day of Atonement, and then Jesus is like, "Once." That's amazing. Such a great sacrifice, such a great priest, with his own blood. He did not bring in animals. He did not look for the most, uh, spot-free, blemish-free goat. Something about that should just make us say, "Not that, we need something more." God had a body. He took on flesh at Christmas, he had blood pumping through his veins for 33 years and he spilled that blood on the cross.

45That blood is sufficient. And his blood was not for himself. If you remember, that's a phrase we read earlier. Hopefully every high priest was humble enough to realize, "I cannot enter in to God's holy presence on my own. I need to, in a sense, be a priest for myself and sacrifice for myself." That was not true with Jesus. He did not need to bring anything for himself. He was the perfect spotless sacrifice, fully able to appease God. Hebrews 7:26 speaks of him and says, "He is a high priest who is holy, innocent, unstained, and separated from sinners. And he secured eternal redemption." The beauty of it being a one-time sacrifice is that the effects go on for eternity.

46He doesn't need to keep doing it. We only need Christ. We only need Christ's sacrifice once. We only need to put our faith in that historic phenomenal event. And what are the effects of that ministry? The last two verses in our text explain that. Look at verse 13 with me. It's gonna make an argument for the lesser to the greater, and it's gonna say that actually the Old Testament did have some effects, it did purify people enough for God to dwell amongst them in a tabernacle, but there's so much more. "For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer sanctify for the purification of the flesh." What that's saying is, if those things actually had some good effects, if they actually purified people in their washings and their different things and made them able to dwell in the same camp as God, how much more? That's one of the author to the Hebrews favorite ideas, favorite phrases.

54How much more? If that worked in its limited ways, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself without blemish to God purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God? In case we missed it in the first go-around a verse earlier, two verses earlier, he goes back to the blood of Christ, which our God poured out unto death. Then it notes through the eternal spirit, I love this, this is so encouraging.Jesus really was a human, fully God, fully man, and he needed to rely on the Holy Spirit to suffer and die on the cross. And so that sacrifice was empowered by the Holy Spirit. You need the Holy Spirit, believer, as well, to empower you for ministry.

52It underscores the fact that he was without blemish. Remember, he was holy. What brings us into the holy place of God? The Holy Lamb of God. The Holy One. The Holy High Priest. And then this is... This is the jackpot. It purifies believers' consciences from dead works. It purifies our consciences from dead works. It works a deep forgiveness. It works a heart cleansing. And now it's- each of us is at different places. Some of us are like, "I don't need God. I'm good enough by myself. I'm not even sure I believe he exists." Beware, he exists. You will stand before the judge of the universe. Some of us are like, "I desperately need Jesus!

48He is my only hope." That is exactly what we should be aiming for, but sometimes those people who have renounced sin and are fighting sin, and are seeking to, to put o- off works of death and put on works of righteousness are plagued by dirty consciences. They have thoughts of this thing that they did and it just keeps coming back and haunting them. Or they just keep their v- they have very sensitive consciences where they see, "Oh, I totally need his her- heart purification. My heart is not right, I just keep seeing it." And for those people, those who are trusted exclusively in Christ and who are doing away with sin, for those people, they need to realize the effects of Jesus' cleansing are amazing. Your heart, your conscience can be purified so that when he transforms your lowly body and brings you into his presence, you can live forever in the presence of a holy God.

58Because of our great high priest, and why did he do that? To enable us to serve the living God. Service doesn't come before salvation so we can earn our way to God, service comes after salvation so that we can serve him. So his fruit can fill our... His spirit can fill our lives and fruit can pour out. We can have the joy of ministering. We have a high priest who enables us by his sacrifice to minister. That was God's intention all along. He came to the people of Exodus to save them that they might be his holy people, a kingdom of priests. Our high priest makes that possible. So what are we supposed to do with all this?

49(laughs) Thank you for clicking in for this wild rollercoaster ride. Two pastoral calls from this text. The first would be pursue Gospel freedom. Go to the high priest to receive the freedom that the Gospel gives. If you are not trusting in Christ, run to Christ! Go to this great high priest who can offer so many benefits for you. He is the only way! He's the only one that brings us into God's presence, and we will all stand before his presence. We need that high priest. And for those who I mentioned earlier who just struggle with the conscience that just feels so off or wrong, time doesn't allow me to address that, but I would say reach out to somebody who knows the word, that can help you preach the Gospel to yourself, that can help you understand maybe what are the things that are in the way. That can help you go to God maybe to receive forgiveness or who can help you live in light of forgiveness that he has purchased for you.

06And I would also say rejoice in the long awaited high priest. There aren't too many Christmas songs that sing about Jesus' high priestly ministry. You might have to do a little work to continue to put the cobwebs out of your brain, but lean into that. And humbly bring yourself before God and say, "You know what? I need your help. I need your help to rejoice in the greatest gift that was given to us at Christmastime, Jesus." The one who lived a perfect life, died a substitutionary death on behalf of those who would trust in him. That is a truly great gift, and we need God's help. We n- we may just need to say, "God, help me.

55Help me to see it afresh." Let me go to him in prayer right now with you. Father, thank you for opening up our mind's eye to see more about your high priestly ministry today. We have a desperate need for you to do a heart work in us, to see your holiness. For some of us, to see our sinfulness, to see that we need a mediator, someone to go before us, someone to help us. Great God, would you help us to deal with all the implications of living in a sinful world? Would you help us to see afresh the great gift of Christmas? And thank you for the communion table which enables us to look at something again that we do often from a fresh angle.

54Thank you that we can do that at Christmas. Thank you that we can look at the cross and see the Christmas star put on it so that we can make the connection that our gift at Christmas came to die. We pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen. (piano music plays)
