This Is My Beloved Son

18Would You join me as we pray and ask the Lord for help. Father, open our eyes so that we would see the majesty of who you are and the glories of Jesus and liven our hearts to worship afresh and cause your spirit to descend so that we would be filled with your spirit and see you more clearly as a result of studying your word. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

57As some of you know that on Friday night we had the inauguration ceremony of our very own Dr. Brian tab to be the third president of Bethlehem College and Seminary. And I know some of you were there. It had all the pomp and ceremony that you might expect. The professors were in their regalia. That's a new word to me. It's the goofy hats and the long robes in attendance were delegates from other institutions. There was a word of partnership from the new president of desiring, God, my good friend Marshall Siegel. There was a charge given by the chancellor, Dr. John Piper. I had the privilege of praying the prayer of installation.

43There was the investiture where they ceremonially placed the presidential medallion on Brian. So this is kind of like what you imagine. Kirk cousins with the chains, right? Like he, he's gets this big medallion around his neck, inaugurations call for all the formality and ceremony to mark the moment. And just a couple of months we're gonna have an even bigger inauguration, aren't we? The inauguration of the new president of the United States. At that inauguration, the president will recite his oath of office, it's gonna have a inaugural address, it's gonna have prayers and a congressional luncheon, maybe even a parade.

27The more prominent the position, the more pomp and circumstance and ceremony that surrounds that inauguration. And yet in contrast in our text this morning, this is the inauguration of Jesus Christ. And it did not begin with any earthly honors. There was no crown for the king. There was no parade for the Messiah. There was a no anointing for this high priest. There was no ceremony for the Christ. Our passage describes the inauguration of Jesus. In rather pedestrian terms, it's rather anticlimactic. Jesus comes to John in the middle of nowhere in order to be baptized in a dirty river. Where's the processional? Where's the crown?

20Where's the parade? Where's the medallion or the regalia or the orchestra or the trumpet blasts? Where's the ceremony or the crowds of adoring fans? Where's the flags and the feast and the fanfare and the fireworks? None of it. This was rather anti-climactic. And if you look in our text, John was even a reluctant participant. He's like, I'd rather not, but if you insist Jesus, so was this moment insignificant? Sure Jesus got baptized and sure the spirit descends. A voice from heaven speaks. That's unique. But have you ever slowed down to ponder why is this moment in our Bibles and is it indeed a big deal?

08What is happening and what does God reveal about Jesus? That's the question I want to answer this morning. What is happening and what does God reveal about Jesus? And our plan is to look at it in two parts. Verses 13 to 15 is the pre baptism conversation that happens between Jesus and John. And then in 16 and 17 we get the post baptism affirmation from the Spirit and from the Father. So look with me now in this first part, John objects and Jesus answers in verses 13 to 15. Verse 13 says, then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan, to John to be baptized by him. So John is hanging out in the middle of nowhere, eating his locust, snacking on his honey.

57And Jesus takes the initiative to go to him. John objects, verse 14, John would've prevented him saying, I need to be baptized by you. And do you come to me? John's incredulous. Now, we just saw last week the Sadducees and the Pharisees come to John and they were unworthy of baptism because they were unwilling to repent. But now John says, the tables are turned. I am unworthy. Jesus, I was unworthy to hold your sandals must let much less to baptize you. He's shocked that Jesus comes to him. Now, he's already said He who is coming after me is mightier than I. So uh, the question before is, is why does Jesus seek out John's baptism?

43Why does Jesus seek out John's baptism? This is further complicated by a couple of verses in John chapter one. I'll read it for you, John chapter one, verses 31 and 33. John says, twice I myself did not know him and he was referring to Jesus. What he means by that is he didn't fully recognize that Jesus as the Son of God or as the Messiah until after his baptism. So why is John reluctant at this moment to baptize Jesus? Uh, I think it's because this, John knew that Jesus was morally superior. Jesus didn't need a baptism for repentance because he was a righteous man. And even when John was in the womb of his mother, Elizabeth, he leapt for joy in Jesus' presence.

32And so he knows at this moment that the roles should be reversed. But Jesus answers in John 15, excuse me, Jesus answered in Matthew three 15, let it be so now for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented. This is of actually a very difficult verse. The the phrase to fulfill all righteousness is confusing. It's debated. The commentators are divided on what it means. And it doesn't say to fulfill scripture, which we've seen like a specific Old Testament passage. It doesn't say to fulfill the prophets like, oh, some guy said something. But it says to fulfill all righteousness.

19And there's no direct Old Testament quotation that follows. So let me tell you what I think it means from a broad level and then let try to show you from the text. Jesus baptism fulfills all righteousness because it was God's will for John to baptize Jesus and to do God's will is righteousness. Doing God's will is what is right. It's righteousness. So Jesus knew that he needed to be baptized at this particular moment. And he knew that because he knew his Old Testament, which we'll see in just a moment. So even though Jesus didn't need a baptism of repentance because he was without sin, he didn't need to confess any sins, he needed to be baptized in order to do God's will, which fulfills righteousness.

09It was right. Now, where in the Bible then does it suggest that Jesus needed to be baptized? Before we answer that question, we have to understand what Jesus baptism means. He doesn't confess sin. He doesn't need to repent. So something else is happening in Jesus' baptism. Jesus baptism is how he identifies with sinners. Now, we've seen throughout Matthew, we've seen throughout the gospels that Jesus before he can save his people, he must be like them fully human, which is why he comes as Emmanuel, the word become flesh. He emptied himself. Philippians two says, by taking the form of a servant being born in the likeness of men.

55And so Jesus baptism identifies him with sinners in need of a savior. And so what verse speaks to something like that? Well, Isaiah 53 verse 12 speaks in that way it speaking of this suffering servant who is to come. And I'll read Isaiah 53 12. It says, therefore I will divide with him a portion with the many. And he shall divide the spoil with the strong because he poured out his soul to death. But what about the suffering servant? He was numbered with the transgressors, yet he bore the sin of many. So Jesus takes on the role of the suffering servant of Isaiah, and he identifies with sinners.

42One verse earlier in Isaiah 53 11, it says this, by his knowledge, shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted, righteous, and he shall bear their iniquity. So Jesus comes as the righteous one who has no sin, but he identifies with sinners so that he can then make payment for their sin. Jesus did not need to repent, but the nation of Israel needed to repent. And Jesus inextricably binds himself with his people. So let, let, let me try to illustrate it 'cause I know this can be a little bit confusing. Hurricane Milton just blew through. And so if you are the governor of the state that's just been devastated, what do you do?

30You don't just sit in the governor's mansion and watch college football or NFL football. You don't just give press conferences from the Capitol State room. What do you do? You go down to the affected towns and you listen to the people and you say, whatever obstacles are in the way, we're gonna clear them out. We're gonna get you help. And you sit with that weeping mother and you say, we're gonna find your children. You walk among the debris, you help with the cleanup, and you listen to people's heartache and loss. You identify with your people. And that's what Jesus is doing in his baptism. He doesn't stand there with John.

12And he says, yeah, you people repent. What does he do? He says, I'm gonna stand with you all sinners as one who will take on your sin. I'm gonna identify with a people desperate need of a savior, and I'm gonna get baptized even though I don't need it. I'm identifying with you. And that's what's happening here. I will be numbered with you sinners, so then I can then make sacrifice for your sins. Jesus baptism is the way in which he binds himself to his people. He's saying, I'm gonna be numbered with the transgressors. I'm gonna be numbered with sinners. And when we get baptized, what are we saying?

06We're bound to Christ in his death and resurrection. So Jesus baptism binds him to his people. It also affirms and endorses John's ministry, doesn't it? When when people come and they see John, uh, they don't say, well, Jesus didn't like John. They say, no, actually Jesus submitted to John's baptism. He validates his baptism. He shows everyone this indeed is the prophet sent from God in the Spirit and power of Elijah. Jesus baptism also reveals his perfect obedience to the Father in order to be the sinless lamb of God. If we look throughout the Bible, we also see that God's people often would have to go through judgment, waters by faith and to make it out on the other side, we think of the flood in Genesis, we think of going through the Red Sea.

57And so now Jesus baptism foreshadows his death and his resurrection, and later on the disciples will come to Jesus and say, well, we can drink from the cup that you drink. We can be baptized with the baptism you've received. And Jesus says, no, no, no, no, it's not just a cup, it's the cup of God's wrath. The baptism is a baptism into my death. So John's objection is right. He shouldn't baptize Jesus. But for now, for now, at this moment in salvation history, this fulfills all righteousness. Because Jesus needed to be found with his people. He needed to obey the Father. And he reveals himself in this inaugural moment when all eyes are on him, who is he?

44He's the suffering servant of Isaiah 53. He doesn't come in riding on a white horse with a sword on his side. He comes in saying, I'm gonna be numbered with the transgressors. Jesus inauguration is not marked by pomp and circumstance. No fanfare, no regalia. Jesus' inauguration is marked by humility, by obedience to the Father, submission in taking the form of a servant. And Jesus is the forerunner for his people. He goes before them. And because all of his people, all of his disciples, he's gonna tell them, be baptized, he goes before them and gets baptized. First. Jesus comes in this moment to reveal that he does not come to judge the world, but in order to save it, John three 17.

41And so in this seemingly pedestrian account of Jesus baptism, what it does is it reveals the infinite love of God in this is love. Not that we have loved God, but that he loved us. And in that love, what did he do? He sent his son to be the propitiation for our sins. And in this moment is the sending the love of God is displayed not only in the cross, but also in the sending of Jesus to show the infinite love of God that God so desires fellowship with his people. He looks out on his sheep who are scattered without a shepherd, living in the midst of darkness and glue marred by sin being torn apart by wild animals.

31And he says, we gotta do something about it. I'm gonna send Jesus to go and to be with my people, to bear their sins. Second Corinthians 5 21, for our sake, he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of Christ, become the righteousness of God. So when John objects, he says, Jesus, it should be the other way around. I can't baptize you. Jesus says to him, essentially, I know, I know it seems backward right now, but allow it. Because if I don't identify with my people, if I don't identify with their sin, they're not gonna get saved. And so I am here to identify with them and to go before them so that I might save them.

30So the call this morning, if you're not trusting in Jesus, is to see and believe and to receive this gift of salvation that is purchased by Jesus. And in that purchase at the cross, it began with this moment when Jesus perfectly gloriously humbled himself by taking the form of a servant, identifying himself with his people, being numbered among the transgressors. So what's happening? And what does this reveal about Jesus? Jesus baptism reveals that he identifies with his people in their sin, embraces his mission as the suffering servant who is going to take their punishment. Now let's turn to part two verses 16 and 17.

21And so here in verses 16 and 17, the spirit descends and the father speaks. Verse 16 says, and when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water and behold the heavens were opened to him and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him. This language here employs kind of apocalyptic language. In Mark's gospel, mark one 10, it says, the heavens were torn open, which kind of signals divine intervention. Ezekiel one, one says, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God. So something big is happening. And remember what John just preached in chapter three, verse two, repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

11And now in this moment, the heavens are opened up. It's here, it's in this moment, the last days. Now the spirit of God, which is the same as the Holy Spirit descends on Jesus like a dove. It says, now it could mean that the spirit looked like a dove or descended in the manner of a dove. Now, what does this mean? What does it mean? What's the significance of this? I think it's it's symbolic and it alludes to several possible kind of Old Testament passages. So here's some possible interpretations. The spirit of God hovered over the waters in Genesis chapter one, verse two at creation. And so in this same way, the spirit hovers descends.

53And so it's signaling creation, new creation or a dove is prominent in Noah's Ark, right? He, he goes, sends the dove out. And that's a new world at that point that's being reestablished. So here is this new world or dove signifies Israel. In Hosea seven 11, it says, Ephraim is like a dove. God's people are like a dove. So Jesus, it is being seen as like a dove in a sense. The spirit descends on him. So he's the new true Israel, or a dove is emblem of weakness. So it conveys Jesus power in gentleness. A dove was also the sacrifice for the poor. And so it could be signaling Jesus' humility. A dove could also be a messenger symbolizing the Father, giving his mission to Jesus.

45It's like the charge that you might find at an inauguration. So which is the right one? To be honest, I'm not entirely sure, but I'm inclined to think it means all of those things. This moment marks the inauguration of Jesus. It's new creation, it's a new Messianic age. It's the new true Israel. And Jesus does indeed come with power veiled in gentleness with great humility. He's come to carry out the father's mission and the spirit indwells Jesus to enable his obedience and his faithfulness. Next week in chapter four, we're gonna see it's the spirit that leads Jesus out into the wilderness in order to be tempted by Satan.

31And so the spirit is directing and empowering Jesus to fulfill exactly what's needed. Now in verse 17, we get this divine voice and behold a voice from heaven said, this is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased, both Mark and Luke's gospel say, you are my beloved son. Matthew says, this is my beloved son. I think what Matthew is trying to get us to see is that this is a public event, John heard and saw and the crowds did as well. Now, what's the significance of this word from heaven? I think it echoes two old temp, excuse me, two Old Testament passages. The first passage is Psalm two seven, which says this, the Lord said to me, you are my son.

32Today I have begotten you. Psalm two is this messianic psalm that celebrates this Davidic king and this spirit. And now this voice I think, reveal that Jesus is the character of Psalm two. He's the anointed one of Psalm two, two. He's the Davidic king of Zion, of Psalm two six. He's God's beloved son. Psalm two seven. So in the very next passage, Jesus sonship is going to come up as a point of contention. Satan is gonna come to Jesus. And what does he say? Well, if you truly are the Son of God, just like in the garden, well, if God said, did he really? He questions what God is making clear, beware of the lies of Satan.

23But here in this moment, God explodes with divine affirmation and satisfaction. This is my son. It's for Jesus to hear, and it's for all those around to hear in this moment. Don't doubt it for a moment. The second passage is Isaiah 42, 1 Isaiah 42. One says, behold my servant whom I uphold, my chosen in whom my soul delights, I have put my spirit upon him. You can kind of see all the different overlapping phrases. The spirit descends on him. I've put my spirit upon him in whom my soul delights. Jesus is again presented as the suffering servant who receives the spirit and brings joy and pleasure to God.

09It matches what we saw earlier in Isaiah 53. Now you might say, well, that's great, those two passages. Like, what does that mean? What's the significance? Like? What's the takeaway? These two Old Testament passages reveal that Jesus is the Davidic King, the anointed one, the suffering servant, the Spirit filled Son of God. And it's contrary to what John would've otherwise expected. He's like, I, I know there's someone coming who's gonna be a really good leader, a really good king. Like I, I'm ready for him. I'm not worthy to hold his sandals. But lo and behold, God comes in the flesh. It's not just a great man who's gonna lead God's people.

55It is God himself who's come to dwell among his people. God breaks into human existence limiting himself to time and space, humbling himself to become a servant, to lay down his life for his people. And don't miss the fact that this is the first occurrence in Matthew, where we see the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit all together, Trinity, the triune God, both mysterious and, and I think sometimes we can feel like maybe it's irrelevant, you know, maybe it's very philosophical. It's hard to understand. Let me just highlight one main thing. 'cause I, I think I understanding the triune God, the Trinity helps guard against false teaching like the Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons and other cults that deny the Trinity.

47But what I wanna do is not highlight sort of the reasons for it, make an argument for it. But I wanna show us once the dominant note at Jesus baptism, what's the dominant note here at Jesus baptism? It's delight, it's joy. It's God's pleasure. Before the foundation of the world, we know that God loves the Son. John 1724. Jesus says, I know that you've loved me even before the foundation of the world. So why do we have this moment where the Father tells that he loves the Son delights in him. So that we might see, I think it's this at this moment, God explodes in joy at the sending of his son in order to save sinners.

32God explodes in joy in the sending of his son in order to save sinners. God so delights to send Jesus, to bring them into the eternal infinite and everlasting love that is shared among the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit in salvation we're invited into the perfect loving fellowship and unity of the Father, son, and spirit. It's what often theologians teach that the Father has perfect love with the Son and the spirit, and the Son has perfect love for the Father and the spirit. And the Spirit has perfect love for the Father and the Son. And in this perfect communion, they say, we, we have so much love to share.

22What, what should we do? Let's make a people so that we might send the son in order to redeem them so that we would bring all of those people and invite them into the perfect expression and fellowship of this divine triune God, I'm so excited and eager to save sinners so that they would taste and see the joy that we have for one another, and that they would be invited into that joy. It's a little bit like this, those of you who have kids or had kids at some point, right? You're a parent. And recall the moment you held your newborn child for the very first time, very first moment.

09How do you feel indescribable awe and joy and delight. And this child has done nothing like less than nothing like maybe a little bit of meconium, right? And you're like cheering that on, like, whoa, that's amazing. How can you have so much love for this child and feel such joy and protectiveness that you've held for mere moments? That's just a small fraction of the love and joy that God has for Jesus in this moment. And he says, there's so much there, I wanna bring other people into sharing in it. And, and this is what is so amazing about this. Let me try to illustrate it this way. I, I really love my children.

57And so if I tell you I, I I really, really love Noel and Malachi and Ezekiel and Caris and Isaiah. Hey, you guys think, okay, that's great. Like, we're glad that our pastor does not hate his own children, right? Like it doesn't do much for you, but, and we might think that that's what's happening here in this moment. Yeah, of course the father loves the son, but that's not what's happening here. But when God says he loves Jesus and his pleasure is in him, it's because he loves and longs to be in relationship with us. When God the father says about this of his son, this is my beloved one. Not just that I love him, I'm delighting in him because I'm sending him to rescue a people that I might show my immeasurable riches of grace to them for a lifetime.

57And so in sending Jesus, we're rescuing people in this moment. And all of you get to share in this eternal, everlasting, infinite, never ceasing love that is shared between the Father, the son, and the spirit. And so when Jesus, when God the father says this about Jesus, I love him. It's not just for Jesus, it's for us. So that we would know the infinite, everlasting self-giving love of the Father, God does not save begrudgingly he saves out of the overflow of his generosity and of his self-giving love. So what he's saying in that moment is, I have so much love to give that I'm sending Jesus to save sinners, to bring them into the infinite expression of our love.

47This is why John three 16 begins. For God so loved the world, he gave his only son. And when Jesus saw what he was come to do, I gotta take on the role of the suffering servant. I gotta lay down my life. I gotta identify with the transgressions of these people. I gotta bear their iniquities. He saw the pain and the suffering of the cross. But what did he do? He saw the joy that was set before him. Jesus was no masochist. He didn't say, oh yeah, I can't wait for that flogging dying of as asphyxiation. He said, the joy of welcoming a people into the infinite expression of our love. That's the joy that he saw before him in making sinners, his sons and daughters.

41So what's happening and what does God reveal about Jesus? The Father and the Spirit reveal that Jesus is the Son of God and they display the infinite and eternal love that exists within the triune God. So the main point of our passage this morning is that the beloved son of God was baptized for us. This baptism is not just any old baptism, it was for us. Jesus didn't need a baptism of repentance. He was baptized in order to fulfill righteousness, to identify with sinners, to go as a forerunner of his people, to be the suffering servant who would lay down his life and bear the iniquities and the sins of his people.

30So the Father sends the son, the son obeys the Father, and the spirit empowers the son in order to accomplish this work of salvation. And our aim then, the reason this is in our Bibles is so that we would see that Jesus is a forerunner of his people and that he's for us, he's for us. He could bear the punishment of our sin exhibit perfect obedience to the Father, completely sinless in his humanity. He's gonna say, I have to do it this way so that I can then give my righteousness to my people, bear their sins in my own body, and that they would see the immeasurable love of the Father, son, and spirit.

19So this inaugural ministry fulfills righteousness and reveals his perfect obedience to the Father. I wanna make two applications for us this morning. The first application is this, the same spirit that in dwelt and descended upon Jesus and empowered Jesus for all of his ministry is the same spirit that dwells within us. The same spirit in dwells believers today, if if you feel down and out, you feel like I can't do it, I, I feel so weak, I struggle too much. You need to know that the very same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is the same spirit that dwells in every single believer this morning.

05Romans eight 11, if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead, will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit who dwells within you. So every believer this morning, you have God's spirit in dwelling you, empowering you so that you might walk in his ways, see him as he is and love him and trust him and obey him. God's spirit indwells you and empowers you right now. Uh, one other thing I wanna say. Last week I said that Jesus baptism with the Holy Spirit in fire is the normal indwelling and empowering spirit. So this was to teach against Pentecostalism, which teaches of two baptisms very often.

58So there's water baptism, and then you gotta get a spirit baptism where you start speaking in tongues. And we just don't think that's true. Baptism by the spirit is where God unites us to Jesus, his body and the church at conversion. But what I don't want that to mean is this, that we shouldn't ask or seek for a fresh filling, a fresh outpouring or a fresh experience of the spirit after our conversion. Every believer, every believer has the spirit. And at the same time we wanna ask, oh God, give me more of your spirit. I prayed like that at the beginning of the sermon. We pray like that every single week in the prayer room.

41God cause your spirit to fill us afresh so that we would see what you want us to see so that we would feel these very realities to the very depths of our core so that you would confirm it from your word and that we would know it. And so pour out your spirit afresh so that we would experience a unique outpouring and enabling of the spirit in a particular moment. The second application is this, that we are sons and daughters of the most high God. We are sons and daughters of the most high God. Jesus identifies with his people and goes before us as a forerunner. So Colossians three, three says, for you have died.

26And your life now because of what Christ has done, is hidden with Christ in God. So every believer has been brought into union with Christ. We're hidden in Jesus. Jesus needed to identify with his people. And in his death and resurrection, we get baptized into Christ. And now we are brought into union with him. And so we are now sons and daughters of God. This is mind blowing that were sons and daughters of God. Jesus praise in John 17 I and them and you and me speaking of Him and the Father that they, his people, his disciples may become perfectly one so that the world may know that you sent me and that you love them even as you loved me.

16Do you see that? That the world and his disciples would know that God the Father loves his people in the same way that God the Father loves Jesus, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them and I in them, it, it's almost unfathomable to think that we are loved by the Father in the same type of love that the Father loves the Son. It's like someone saying to you, I really love you. I I lively like you were my own child. We know instinctively what that means, don't we? Because they love their own child more. We have more love for our own biological or adopted children. And to say, I, I love you as if I love my own child.

12You might say that to an in-law like, man, that's a lot of love. And in that same way, Jesus says, God loves you, like God the Father loves me. So the same heart that says, this is my beloved son in whom I am. Well please, that same heart looks out on every single one of his children. And he says, you are my beloved sons and daughters in whom I take great delight. This is why the baptism of Jesus is so stunning. Jesus identifies with sinners. The Father says, you're doing exactly what I want. I I'm so delighted that we're sending you in order to save sinners. And my love is upon you, but it's not just upon you.

04The same love that I have for you is gonna be for all those whom you will bring in as sons and daughters. JI Packer says this, if you wanna judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God's child in having God as his father. If you understand Christianity, you're gonna make much of being a son or daughter of the most high King. We are adopted children grafted into the vine. We are co-heirs with Christ. We are Jesus brothers and sisters, and we are God's children. So this morning, this passage is not just any old inauguration, God revels in sending his son of righteousness full of the spirit to save sinners, to do his will, to bring us to him.

08And so this morning, we wanna marvel at the fact that Jesus came for us. He shed his blood for us, and he makes us sons and daughters and brings us into the eternal fellowship of the triune God. Let's pray. Father in heaven cause these truths to resonate deep into our souls, bearing much good fruit. Oh, we wanna behold you more clearly, we wanna delight in you more fully. We wanna walk out of here knowing that we are sons and daughters of the most high King. So thank you for sending your son Jesus. Oh, thank you for the gift of Christ. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Matthew 3:13-17
