The Pattern for Gospel Advance

Listen on

Steven Lee
Pastor for Preaching & Vision

16So this morning is the second Sunday of global focus. So last week Pastor Nick looked at the bookends of chapter 13 and chapter 14. And this morning we're going to look at what transpires in the middle this missionary journey. So we have nearly 70 verses to cover. I just had Cyrus just read a few of them and if you think I'm going too quickly, you have Pastor Nick to blame. So we're gonna look at these two chapters and see the pattern that emerges, particularly the centrality of God's word in missions. Would you join me now as we pray and ask the Lord for help? Father in heaven, we ask that you would work as we open your word, that you would cause us to see by the power of your spirit what you want us to see in this word and enliven our hearts so that we would love your word more and delight in Christ more fully and that you would have your way among us.

19We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. I was once invited to attend this conference that was sponsored and put on by the largest international Christian humanitarian organization in the world. So they have a $3.4 billion budget. They employ 34,000 staff. If I said their name, you would probably know their ministry. You might even support their ministry. They work worldwide to to to provide clean water and sanitation and hygiene. They promote child development. They're most well known for their child sponsorship program, 2.3 million child sponsorships in 54 countries. Humanitarian aid has reached 36.4 million people in response to various disasters around the world.

16And I pulled up their 2023 annual report and there was no mention of proclaiming the gospel, no mention of preaching the good news, no mention of the Bible or the Christian scriptures or the word of God in their 24 page report, the name of Jesus showed up just once and it was in a passing reference that we want these children to become all that Jesus created them to be. There was a very surprising lack of emphasis on Jesus and his word for this Christian organization. So why is a Christian organization seemingly so allergic to Jesus? Its former president, said that they have a strict rule against proselytizing, which means to seek to convert someone to the Christian faith.

13Now I will concede that I don't see the inner workings of this organization. I don't see what goes on in their internal memos. I don't know if the gospel is being proclaimed in their ministry, but it seems odd that a Christian humanitarian organization is so allergic to talking about Jesus and the gospel. Why might this be? Well, I imagine that it's a little bit more marketable. It's less offensive to avoid the name of Jesus. They'll get less criticism from secular voices. They can open themselves up to more grants and foundations. No one gets mad at you for caring about children, impoverished children around the world and and child development and education and clean water and humanitarian aid.

03But people will get mad at you if you say that Jesus is the only way, the truth and the life. So when we look at the pattern of the early church, particularly Paul and Barnabas, they were not allergic to the name of Jesus. Quite the opposite. Last week we saw the centrality of the church at the bookends of chapter 13 and 14. Missions is from the church and for the church. What we wanna see this morning is the central role of the word of God in missions. What we wanna see this morning is the central role of the word of God, the gospel, the good news in missions, a pattern emerges in our text that shows that the gospel advances as God sends his disciples to proclaim the word of God in the face of great opposition.

04And so we have a lot of verses to cover nearly 70. And so I'm gonna have to give more of an overview this morning. And what I wanna do is walk through the four stops that take place in chapter 13 and 14 and show the pattern of gospel, advance the pattern of gospel advance and they make four main stops. You can kind of see it in the headers in your Bible. They stop in the island of Cyprus. That's four to 12 that we just heard. Read Antioch in Pisidia. That's 13 to 52 of chapter 13. And then the first seven verses of chapter 14, they stop in Iconium and then Lyra eight to 20. So we're gonna look at those four stops and see the pattern for gospel advance and then apply this to our church today.

53And I'm just gonna tell you on the front end the pattern that I see and then as we walk through each of the passages, you can see if that is indeed the case. So in every text I see God directing his people five elements. God directing his people to proclaim God's word in power for salvation amid opposition. God directing his people to proclaim God's word in power for salvation amid opposition. Five elements in all four of these stops. And if we wanted to put it in a sentence, we could say God directs the mission of the church to proclaim the word of God in the power of the spirit to gather Christ's bride, both Jews and Gentiles amid enemy opposition.

42And what we should be thinking in this first missionary journey is that there's a spiritual war that is taking place here. There's spiritual warfare. And what Paul does is he gives us a blueprint on how this war is to go, how we're to fight this war. God sends his soldiers to wield the word of God in the power of the spirit to rescue prisoners that are captured in bondage to Satan while enduring the darts and arrows of the evil one. So let's look at verses four through 12, this gospel advance on the island of Cyprus. If you look at verse four, notice who sends Paul and Barnabas being sent out by the Holy Spirit.

26Then in verse five, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogue of the Jews. So this was their pattern. Whenever they would go to a new place, they would establish contact with the Jewish community and it would've been very natural for these visitors, these Jewish visitors that are gathered in the synagogue. Do you have a word? Why don't you share a word of encouragement with us? And so Paul and Barnabas use this opportunity to proclaim the word of God. I think what that phrase means is that they tell the Jews that the Messiah has come and that the Messiah is Jesus. We'll see in greater depth some of what they talk about when they, whenever it refers to the content of this word in the second stop.

10But for now we see God by his spirit sends, and then the people proclaim the word of God. Now throughout the whole region, they encounter finally a magician. This false prophet bar Jesus who served the Roman ProCon serius paulus. Verse eight says, but elemis, the magician opposed them seeking to turn the ProCon away from the faith. But Paul filled with the Holy Spirit in verse nine, calls him a son of the devil leaving him blind and groping about. So despite opposition, God displays his power and the ProCon gets saved. Look in verse 12, it said the pro consul believed when he saw what had occurred, but he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

02It's not just the power encounter, but it's actually the proclamation of the word of God that saves. So at Cyprus we begin to see this pattern. God sends his people to proclaim his word in power for salvation. Amid opposition, God's word accomplishes God's mission in saving sinners. Now let's see this same pattern in stop two in verses 13 to 52. So the second stop they get to Antioch in Pisidia. This is a much longer passage and the reason for that is from verse 16 all the way to verse 41. This is Paul's sermon, what would've been kind of a sampling of his sermon here. So we're gonna look at the pattern first and then we'll look at Paul's sermon.

54We'll come back to it. So they get to the synagogue, they're invited to share a word of encouragement. Verse 15 Brothers, if you have a word of encouragement for the people, say it now, skip down to verse 42, after Paul gives this extended sermon, this word of encouragement, verse 42 says, and they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath like come back and tell us more. Paul verse 43. And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism. So Jews and Gentiles followed Paul and Barnabas, who as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.

38You see the pattern again, Paul proclaims the word, many get saved, he urged them to continue in the grace of God, meaning as they left the synagogue they wanted to follow Paul, he kept telling them about Jesus the Messiah and and it says that they likely received the grace of God. And so as he sends them away, he says, continue in the grace of God. So they received the grace of God and forgiveness of sins and justification. Now look at verse 44. Here comes the opposition, the next Sabbath. Almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul Reviling.

20Him and Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly saying it was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. But since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold we are turning to the Gentiles. So this huge crowd gathers the following week, opposition arises, they revile God's messengers and they get kicked out of the synagogue. Paul and Barnabas say that they're gonna go to the Gentiles. Look at verse 47. This is how they respond for, so the Lord has commanded us saying, I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.

04So what's taking place is that Jesus' disciples continue Jesus' mission in order to not only proclaim the gospel to Jews, but also to go to the Gentiles. He's quoting from Isaiah 49 verse six. They're to proclaim the light which symbolizes the gospel or salvation and he's to do it to both Jews and Gentiles. This gospel message missions is an all peoples and all nations endeavor, both Jews and Gentiles. The the mission we talk about of spreading a passion for the supremacy of God is a global mission. It is for all peoples. Now how did the Gentiles respond? Look at verse 48. And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord.

58And as many as were appointed to eternal life believed and the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region. So again, we see this gospel advance God's people proclaiming his word, enemies, opposing the word God, directing his mission to the Gentiles and through the boldness of Paul and Barnabas and then God's power to save. And we see salvation come so that as many as we're appointed to eternal life believed. That last phrase there in verse 48 is an amazing encouragement for us this morning. It reveals that God is sovereign in the work of salvation. He irresistibly draws people to faith in Christ.

51As many as God had planned or appointed or ordained to believe, believed he's decisive in this work of belief and salvation. And so yes, God absolutely uses the means of prayer and evangelism and preaching and proclaiming the gospel and acts of love and service. And yes, even humanitarian assistance, holistic ministry. And yet God has ordained and planned and appointed some to eternal life. And so this should be an encouragement for us this morning. Don't grow weary in praying and evangelizing and preaching Christ. God has sovereignly and assuredly appointed many to eternal life. Now let's take a moment to back up to look at the content of Paul's message in verses 16 to 41.

53I don't have time to break it all the way down, but let's just notice the broad categories of what Paul preaches. And I think we see three main things. The first thing is Paul re re uh, recaps or rec recapitulates salvation history in verses 16 to 25. So he begins with God choosing Israel, leading them up out of Egypt with the wilderness wandering for 40 years. Then the promised land, then he refers to the judges, Samuel, Saul, king David, all the way to John the Baptist. And then Jesus, this is 16 to 25. What he does is he shows them that Jesus is the climax of salvation history. Try to situate them within the context of redemptive history.

39The second thing we see in Paul's message is that Paul then tells them of Jesus' death and resurrection right at the heart of the gospel. This is verse 26 to 37. He said The rulers in Jerusalem didn't recognize Jesus. They condemned him, they crucified him to a tree. And then in verse 32 he says, now we bring you good news that what God promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus. And then he quotes three old Testament passages, Psalm two, seven, Isaiah 55, 3 in Psalm 1610 to show three things about the nature and work of Jesus. That Jesus is the son of God from Psalm two, seven, that he's the messianic son of David from Isaiah 55, 3 and he's the holy one who will not see corruption in Psalm 1610.

35So what Paul is doing is he's arguing from the scriptures that Jesus is the resurrected Lord and Savior. The scriptures validate and reinforce the scriptures. If you preach a message that does not have Jesus, you have a powerless message. Third thing Paul does is he calls for repentance. In verse 38 to 41, verse 38 says, let it be known to you therefore brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you and by him, everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. And then he quotes Habakkuk one five as a warning to not reject what he's just said.

25So the proclamation of God's word that I think we get summarized here, takes place at every single one of these stops where we get this extended account here in this section and it shows us that he gives the context of salvation history. Then he preaches Christ's death and resurrection and then he calls for repentance. It shows us the centrality of the word of God, particularly the gospel of Jesus Christ, what Jesus has accomplished in his life and death and resurrection, and then this call to repentance. So this morning, are we ready? Are we able? Are we equipped to share the gospel? Like Paul, if someone were to ask you, now let's turn to see the same pattern in stop three and stop four.

19And I'm gonna move quickly through these last two stops because you now know the pattern and guess what, it's the same in stop three and stop four. So chapter 14, they stop at Iconium. Verse one says, now at Iconium they entered together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed. So we again, we see preaching of the gospel and then we see people coming to faith, salvation, but the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brother. So again, we get opposition, all three elements of that pattern. Yet the disciples remained for a long time.

03Verse three, speaking boldly for the Lord who bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands. So again, we see this pattern unfold. God directs his people by granting them boldness and then he reveals his power through signs and wonders to testify to the authenticity of the word that they just preached. We get all five of these elements once again and look how the people respond. In verse four, some sided with the Jews and some with the apostles. What we see in in this stop is that the gospel, the preaching of the gospel is in fact divisive, that it divides people.

51Some agreed, some sided with the Jews, some with the apostles. If you say that Jesus is the only way, the only truth, the only life people will get upset at you. That's so narrow-minded, that's so intolerant. Part of preaching Christ is that preaching him is an aroma of life to some and aroma of death to others. Some will smell it and be like, Paul, tell us more. Come back next week and others will say, we, we should pick up stones and kill you. You either believe or you reject. And the the same is true today. Nothing's changed. If you go around telling people about Jesus, some people will say, boy, I think you should tell me more, like you should come over for coffee sometime.

49I wanna hear more about that. And others, they'll give you the cold shoulder, the icy stare, and they will have nothing to do with you. After remaining a long time. The eventually depart after discovering plans to stone them to death. This leads to our fourth and final stop. Stop four, the gospel advance at Lystra again. We see the same pattern emerge, though the details are different, a crippled man listens to Paul as he's proclaiming this good news. Paul sees that the man has faith and so he heals him. He sprang up and began walking. That's verse 10. The people thought that Paul and Barnabas were like Gods, Zeus, Hermes Paul restrains them from sacrificing to him in verse 18.

42But opposition comes once again. The Jews come from Antioch and Iconium and persuade all the people and they stone Paul nearly to death. And yet verse 21 tells us that they had made disciples at Lyra in Iconium and Antioch. So again, we see this pattern of gospel advance God's people proclaim the gospel. God directs Paul to see the cripple man had faith to be made well, God's power in healing the man. And then we get opposition from the Jews and God once again grants salvation to some. In each of these four stops, we get the blueprint for how the gospel advances. And the thing we're to see is the centrality of God's word.

38It's indispensable, it's essential, it's vital. We have to preach Christ. We have to tell people and teach people about who Jesus is. The gospel advances as God directs his people to proclaim his word in power for salvation amid opposition. And in every single instance some people get saved and some people hate these disciples and want to kill them. We should expect the same today. Every time the gospels preached, someone Lord willing is gonna have seeds planted that God is going to use to bring about new life. And every time there will be some who say, I want none of it.

30So the main point is that the gospel advances is God directs his people to proclaim his word in power for salvation. Amid opposition. Missions exists to proclaim the gospel of Jesus. Missions exist to proclaim the gospel of Jesus. It's the primary means God uses to rescue the blind and crippled and deceived. Our primary weapon in spiritual warfare is wielding the word of God in the power of God. So why say all this chances are in a gathering of Christians? You guys all believe this. Well, one of the reasons is that we need to be reminded to be unashamed of the gospel. We need to be reminded to be unashamed of the gospel.

32Romans one 16, for I'm not ashamed of the gospel. Why? Why is Paul unashamed of the gospel? For it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes to the Jew first and also to the Greek, it's God's means of bringing about worldwide global transformation. The gospel sits right at the center. May we be a people that never moves on or abandons this gospel. May we not be allergic to this gospel.

14This truth motivates us all the more to pray and to proclaim and to invite others to read God's word with us. Because God's word has the power to save. Sadly, many Christians and even churches are ashamed of this gospel. And there are churches who, who continually talk about let's unhitch ourselves from the Old Testament, meaning let's leave the Old Testament behind. It's really kinda confusing and inconsequential and we don't need it. We just need the New Testament. In fact, they would say, let's just minimize all of the obstacles that prevent people from believing miracles of Jesus, including the virgin birth.

01All you really have to do is believe just two miracles, that Jesus died for our sins and that he rose again. And in the process as they keep removing all the obstacles for people to believe in Jesus, they've lost the gospel altogether and they've lost Jesus as well. May it never be so among us here the gospel is offensive because it tells each and every single one of us that we are sinners, we are enemies of God, we are estranged, and we have no hope Apart from him, there's nothing you can do. There's nothing you can say. There's nothing you can kinda work at in order to make it right. Once again, your only hope is believing in God's son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

51You can be as devout as you possibly want and you can be a devout Muslim. You can be a devout Hindu, you can be a devout Buddhist, you can be a really moral and ethical atheist. You could live up to the world standards of whatever is really, really good. I gave lots of my money away. I treated everyone nice. I didn't kick cats walking down the street. I, I was really kind. You know, I, I drove the speed limit. I picked up my litter and none of it will save you. You must believe that Jesus alone is Savior and Lord, this is the aroma of life and death and our prayer that if you're watching or if you're here and you're not trusting in Jesus, that you would surrender yourself and trust in him this morning.

47How do we apply this to our church though in the midst of global focus, the centrality of God's word to accomplish God's mission, to usher in God's people into God's kingdom for God's glory? How do we apply this? I have three main applications for us this morning. The first is this. We send global partners who will prioritize the proclamation of God's word. We send global partners who will prioritize the proclamation of God's word. As many of you know, I think I talked about this last year when I did the global focus sermon, is that we've been on a 18 to 24 month reassessment of all of our global partners.

31We wanted to ensure theological like-mindedness and to ensure the priority of the proclamation and the teaching of God's word. Now don't hear me wrong. Holistic ministry is important. It's often the primary way most of our global partners get into these various countries. And yet the proclamation of the gospel is our urgent priority. Lots of people will care about human suffering, but only Christians care about eternal suffering. So the overwhelming sense after doing most of this reassessment is that our global partners love the centrality of God's word and the church in their ministry, they are engaged in evangelism and church planting and church strengthening both on the front lines and from the back office.

24And so we praise God for their labors. If you come across a global partner today, you should say praise God for your ministry. And then hear about how their efforts and labors either directly or indirectly advance gospel proclamation. I wanna share a word with our global partners who are here this morning or perhaps watching as well. I know there's many of you here and chances are it feels like your work is slow going. You don't see as many conversions as quickly as you would like. You don't see the results of your labors. You may never see the results of your labors in this life. The soil feels rocky every time you put the shovel down into the dirt.

11It just clangs on a rock. And so what you need to do this morning is hear the word of the Lord Galatians six, nine. And let us not grow weary in doing good for in due season. We will reap if we do not give up. And so the word I wanna share with our global partners this morning is press on, press on. In fact, Isaiah 55, 10 and 11 is often the promise I go to most when I get into this pulpit. And I wanna commend it to you. You probably know it, but let me just read it again. Let's all listen in Isaiah 55, 10 and 11, for as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there, but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater.

58So shall my word says the Lord God. So shall my word that goes out from my mouth, it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose and it shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. It tells us that God's word is never failing. It is unstoppable. It will go forth and it will do precisely what God has ordained it would do. And the sad thing is that it may be hardening some they smell this aroma of death and they want less and less and less of it. And yet in the process, God is making it a aroma of life for others. Planting seeds that perhaps someone else a decade from now will come and be like, man, working here is so easy.

53People are coming to faith left and right and you will have tilled that soil for decades in order to enable it to happen. So take heart global partners. God's word does its work, it is unstoppable. You don't need to find a new method. God's word is it. It is sufficient to do his work for his glory, for his purposes, to gather people into his kingdom. And, and some of you this morning. And God is stirring in your heart to take steps to become a goer. And we're gonna have no altar call, no manipulative music while I talk over it. No hard sell. If God is stirring you to consider going to the nations to make much of Jesus, we would love to talk with you.

42Pastor Nick would love to meet with you. You can come to this mission's exploration luncheon and we would love to see what it looks like for you to think about what it might mean to proclaim Christ for Christ's glory among the nations. So that was the first applications we seek to send global partners who will prioritize God's word. Second application is, let's be all about God's word. Let us be all about God's word. It's not just missionaries who should know and love God's word, but it's all of God's people. So do we prioritize knowing God's word this morning? Do we read it? Do we study it? Do we memorize it?

28Do we, can we defend it? Do we obey it? Do we teach it? Do we proclaim it? And there's several ways we could talk about this, but let me just highlight just a few. If a friend said to you tomorrow or on Tuesday or on Wednesday, Hey, you're a Christian, aren't you? You go to church. What's this Christianity thing all about? What would you say in that moment? Do you have an answer? Are you ready to make a defense for the hope that lies within you? If, if not, I would encourage you to write down what you might say. What what would I point to and practice it? Who can you invite to read and study the Bible with you this season?

11I, I've shared this often. You know, one of my most joyous moments is studying the Bible with an unbelieving neighbor, rich, where he came to faith and, and it was just reading the word week after week, uh, that caused the scales to fall from his eyes. And so who can you invite? You don't have to be great at knowing the word. You just have to say, I'd be willing to read it with you and answer questions. Do you have two or three key questions to discover someone's spiritual background or worldview? Or do you have a verse memorized that you could share if someone is talking so that it becomes a pebble in their shoe and every time they take a step, they feel that pebble once again.

53And then maybe they come back months, years, weeks later and say, you said that thing from the Bible. What, what's, what's that mean? God has appointed many to eternal life and he uses our prayers and the proclamation of his word for salvation. So let's not be ashamed of the gospel. Our our world is putting its hope in lots of different things and yet we have hope. So let's open our mouth and tell people of that hope. Third application. Let's exhibit patient endurance. Let's exhibit patient endurance opposition to God's people. Proclaiming God's word is very real. And so pray for our global partners to patiently endure opposition or according to the words of Revelation two 10, that they would be faithful until death and thus receive the crown of life.

57But it's not just missionaries who suffer. If we hold fast to God's word, we will likewise experience opposition. People don't like it if you say what the Bible has always said, that abortion is murder. There are only two sexes or genders, male and female. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and marriage is to be between one man and one woman. For some it will mean you will get passed up for promotions at your workplace. For others you may get fired. Others it will be cold shoulders or your family won't want to have Thanksgiving dinner with you. They'll, they'll, they'll say, just, just play along.

39Share your pronouns, apologize for your whiteness. Fly the rainbow flag and let's just all get along. And in those moments, we are gonna draw upon our unshakeable confidence that comes from God's word and we refuse to lie and we will proclaim Christ all the more. This is the message that brings life. So we draw upon our confidence that is rooted in Christ to patiently endure opposition. Sink your roots deep into Jesus now so that when opposition comes, we'll be ready. You make those decisions now, not in the moment. I will not lie in order to play nice, but I will be faithful to God and his word.

30Yes, we need to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves Matthew 10 16. And that may mean different things, but we will also need to patiently endure the cold shoulders, the icy stairs, the awkward interactions with our family at work and at school and in our neighborhood. It also means that despite however winsome, however gentle, however, loving your witnesses, some people are still going to hate it. And it doesn't mean that you're somehow doing something wrong.

05Rather it's an aroma of death to some all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. Two Timothy three 12. So hold fast to God's word. Hold fast to Jesus and let the chips fall wherever they may. It also means that in a church this large, as we think about all the children that we're raising up to be oaks of righteousness, there are also arrows in our quiver. And someday when they're grown up and old and sharp at the tip, we're gonna shoot 'em out in order to be lights in a crooked and twisted generation. And so we're gonna need to put our baby dedication language to the test, surrendering all worldly claim upon their life in the hope that they will follow Jesus and Lord willing, proclaim Christ to the nations.

00The the biggest obstacle for people going often is parents, grandparents, you're gonna take my grand babies to this far away God-forsaken country. And so may we be a people who fans the flame of those who want to go, those that God is called to go. And our unshakeable hope in all of this is that all those are sovereign Lord has ordained or appointed or planned to eternal life, will indeed assuredly unfailingly. Unstoppably believe this mission is going to get done. And Jesus tells us, I am with you always to the end of the age. So the gospel is advancing. We have the blueprint for the victory.

56We need to be willing to pay the cost and pray that the Lord Jesus would come quickly. Join me as we pray. Father, make us participants in this pattern of gospel advance in far away places like Pakistan and in our neighborhood and backyard, at our workplaces and in our communities. We pray this in Jesus' name and amen.
