The God Who Does Not Forsake His Steadfast Love and Faithfulness

29I am really grateful for our new elder Brian Dwyer, who just prayed my heart, said amen to that prayer. Let me pray again. Our father, help us now to see the truth about you. In this text, bolster our confidence in your steadfast love and faithfulness Enable us to see what it first seems unseeable, and after we've seen it, help us to not unsee it in Jesus' name. Amen. At the outset, I want to tie together four things. Number one, tomorrow's eclipse of the sun. Number two, last week's celebration of Easter, marked by the cross here. Number three, today's text, Genesis 24. And if you're using the pew Bibles, it's on page 17.

33And number four, how can a bucket like this be used to confirm the will of God? Four things I'm gonna try to tie together in this message. Number one is the eclipse of the sun. Number two is Easter. Number three is the text we're gonna look at. And number four, how can a bucket like this be used to confirm the will of God? And today we're resuming the series in Genesis that we began last September. We took a little break for Easter and now we're back. We're nearly halfway through the Book of Genesis At this point in the early going of Genesis, we discovered how on the fourth day God said, quote, let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night.

23And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. And God saw that it was good. Tomorrow, April 8th, those two great lights, the sun and the moon will line up in such a way that there will be a solar eclipse over portions of North America. A few chapters later in Genesis eight, God said to Noah, after the great flood quote, while the earth remains seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease. So those two great lights are right on time to this very day, April 8th, 2024. And Paul clarifies in his letter to the Romans quote, for since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly perceived since the creation of the world in the things that are made sun and the moon.

45So when people observe the predictable eclipse tomorrow, its appearance should evoke an appreciation for God's eternal power and divine nature. His reliability, his synchronized precision, his orderliness and David adds. In Psalm 19, the heavens declare the glory of God. The sky above proclaims his handiwork. The purpose of tomorrow's eclipse is that the glory of God be declared, be seen, be appreciated. Tomorrow, April 8th, God is showing the whole world something having to do with His glory. So that's thing number one. Now the God who ordained the exact minute that the path of the moon would intersect, the path of the rays of the sun is the same God who predestined the crucifixion of Jesus by Herod Pilate and the mob.

54They were there at just the right time. As Acts 4 28 says, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place and what took place Easter, God plans Easter, the arrest, the brutal crucifixion, and the resurrection of his son, just like he plans eclipses right on time. The same God who plans eclipses and Easter plans and carries out the remarkable details of Genesis chapter 24 in today's text and why, because of his steadfast love and faithfulness about which you just sang. Now since it's been three weeks since we left off our series from Genesis, I thought maybe it would be good to summarize where we've been.

53So what I did is I collected I, I collected the main point of all of the 19 sermons that we've had. I listed them all out and I tried to synthesize them into one sentence. And so here's the sentence, the sovereign creator, possessor of heaven and earth is faithful to his indestructible covenant promises and by his good and gracious and undeserved, mercy will redeem the worst failures and will provide blessing upon blessing. That's what I think we've heard for 23 chapters. Let me repeat it to you. See if you think that's what you've heard, the sovereign creator possessor of heaven and earth is faithful to his indestructible covenant promises and by his good and gracious and undeserved, mercy will redeem the worst of failures and will provide blessing upon blessing.

56Now though, these first 24 chapters don't mention Jesus Christ by name, they're governed by him And are laying the groundwork and setting the stage for his pivotal incarnation and preeminent place in history. So the book of Genesis is relentlessly looking forward. It's talking about events that happened there. But these events that are happening right there are about events yet to come. That's what Genesis is the beginning of, we'll see it again here in chapter 24. Chapter 24 is on its way to something. So let's look at it. Verse one, Genesis 24. Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years about 140 years old.

49And the Lord blessed Abraham in all things. Verse two. And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household who had charge of all that he had, that's quite a servant. And though this chapter ever mentions the name of this particular servant, he's probably Eliezer because back in chapter 15 when Abraham still was childless, Eliezer was named as Abraham's heir. This will become relevant in just a few minutes. So Abraham says, put your hand under my thigh. It's an Eastern gesture establishing an agreement. Verse three, that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven. We could put in there the God of eclipses and the God of earth.

43And here comes the meat of the deal, the mission, the servant's assignment. You will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I dwell, but will go to my country and to my kindred and take a wife for my son Isaac. Now though God doesn't speak to Abraham here in an audible voice saying, get Isaac a wife, Abraham nevertheless infers that it is the will of God. For one thing God had promised earlier that Abraham would have generations of offspring through Isaac. That's part of the promise. And Isaac is now 40 and Abraham thinks it's time to get going on this offspring business.

32And Isaac probably agrees. God is sovereign over ends. What he promises and means what he'll use to bring about those promises in their fulfillment, God will fulfill his covenant. But he may do it through man's instrumentality, namely in this case the actions taken by Abraham and his servant. And note, Abraham does not want Isaac to leave the promised land. If he leaves, there's a risk. He may not come back. So let's pick it up in verse five. The servant said to him, well, perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?

17Abraham said to him, see to it that you do not take my son back there the Lord, the God of heaven who took me from my father's house and from the land of my kindred and who spoke to me and swore to me, two your offspring. I will give this land. He will send his angel before meaning prior to you going in advance and you shall take a wife for my son from there. So the servant is not to take Isaac to the woman, but bring the woman to Isaac. And then Abraham addresses the servant's legitimate question. What if she doesn't wanna come? Verse eight. But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you'll be free from this oath of mine.

05So Abraham and I think the Lord do not require success but faithfulness. In fact, faithfulness is the success he requires. And then Abraham repeats for the third time in the end of verse eight, only, you must not take my son back there, verse nine. So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham, his master and swore to him concerning this matter. Verse 10, then the servant took 10 of his masters, camels and departed taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master, and he arose and went to Mesopotamia to the city of Nahar to find a wife. This servant goes to where the candidates are and those who are speaking godly spouses are wise to go where Godly candidates are demonstrating their godliness.

06Gentlemen, you're not gonna find her by hiding in your basement playing video games. Go to places where godly women are behaving like godly women, behave doing what Godly women do. I erased a whole bunch of applications I put in here and now I feel like I should, you know, you know guys, you could volunteer in the nursery. There's some godly women in there. And I'm not a matchmaker. I don't know God's will for you. Oh, I'm, I'm off my manuscript. Get back to that 11. And he made the camel's kneel down outside the city of the well of water at the time of evening, the time when the women go out to draw water.

55Now drawing water for camels is not a particularly religious thing, but it is a godly thing. And having arrived where the candidates are, the servant prays verse 12. And he said, oh Lord God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show steadfast love. There's the theme I think of this chapter show steadfast love to my master, Abraham, the servant asks for divine guidance. He prays he's not in a church service, but he prays right, right where he is as though God hears him right where he is.

38He hears you right now where you are. 13, behold, I'm standing now, he's still praying, he's talking to God. Behold, I'm standing by the spring of water and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Let the young woman to whom I shall say, uh, please let down your jar that I may drink and who shall say, well drink and I will water your camels. Let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. And by this I shall know that you have shown here it is again, steadfast love to my master. The servant doesn't ask for waters to part, he doesn't ask for a rod to turn into a snake.

24He doesn't ask for a camel to throw to crawl through the eye of a needle. He doesn't ask for a miraculous fleece. He does not ask for nature to be suspended. The guidance he requests is not supernatural in that sense. He just is looking for a woman willingly watering beasts of burden, which could be considered miraculous in a little different sense, A transformed nature and perfect timing. Those are God things as well. Let me insert here a word about divine guidance. All of us would like to know God's will for us. We'd like to know his will about marriage, which is in this chapter and went about employment and about where to live and which small group to participate in and a great many other things.

17And it's good and wise to ask God for guidance. I mean, here's an example from the Bible. Psalm 1 43 10, teach me to do your will for you are my God. Let your good spirit lead me on level ground. God does respond to such prayers for guidance. Psalm 25, 9, he leads the humble in what is right and teaches the humble his way. Psalm 48, tell the next generation that this is God our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever. Isaiah 30 21. And your ears shall hear a word behind you saying, this is the way walk in it.

03You know the voice that you hear behind you might be your parents or your wife or your pastor. It may be a very ordinary voice, not necessarily an audible deep baritone, Tim Frederick like voice from the Mount of Transfiguration Or the sound booth. And one more, one more principle about seeking guidance from the Bible. Interpret the historical in light of the didactic not the other way around. That means don't draw too directive a line between what people in the Bible do and what we're told we're supposed to do.

51The descriptive is not necessarily prescriptive. So kids, just because one person does something doesn't mean that everyone else should do it. Even if it was okay for that one person, Gideon put out a fleece. So I will, Moses carried a rod. So I will though I know there are a number of people who carry a rod, David used a slingshot. So I will, the disciples cast lots to select a replacement for Judas. So I'll roll dice at the casino.

31Let's get back to the text in verse 15 and observe God's timing before the servant had finished speaking, He answers before we cry, before he had finished speaking. Behold Rebecca who was born to Beel and she's mentioned briefly back in chapter 22, the son of Milah, the wife of Hor Abraham's brother, came out with her water jar on her shoulder. If you're a little confused here, join the club we have here in this text city called Hor. And we have two count him, two characters named Hor. One of the hors is grandfather to the other hor and to Abraham, who is that hors brother. So that would make Abraham Rebecca's granduncle and she would be Abraham's great niece if you're keeping a scorecard.

21To summarize it, this is my kindred. That was the assignment from Abraham to his servant. Go to my kindred. And this is just documenting that that's who these people are. So the servant has spotted a virgin candidate and wonders if this might be the one 16, the young woman was very attractive in appearance. A maid in whom no man had known. She went down to the spring and filled her, filled her jar and came up. And then the servant ran to meet her. Do you sense some eagerness here? Some enthusiasm, hopes are running high. And he said, please give me a little water to drink from your jar without hesitation.

06Verse 18, she said, well drink my Lord. And she quickly, again, no hesitation, let down her jar upon her hand and gave him a drink. And when she'd finished giving him a drink, she said, I'll draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking. Do you see the double confirmation? The servant asked God for a woman who would offer him a drink check. He also asked God for a woman who unsolicited for offer to water his 10 camels check verse 20. So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water. And she drew water for all his 10 camels. Now I had to look this up. A typical, typical camel can drink up to 53 gallons in three minutes.

08You know what a 55 gallon drum is? 10 of 'em. And I don't suppose her jar is any bigger than this bucket back here. So she's gonna take that bucket to the well to the spring and dip it in there maybe 25 times per camel per camel, 250 times. Now we could play this out and make this a really long sermon. She volunteered to do it. He didn't ask her if she would. This is remarkable in reflecting her character. And it's remarkable in confirming his prayer. I was gonna set it here, but then you folks down there, well maybe you'd rather not see me, I don't know, but alright, keep that in view. We're gonna come back around to it.

19Her willingness to use a bucket to water, 10 camels as God confirmation of God's direction. Verse 21, the man gazed at her in silence. What is happening before my eyes To learn whether the Lord had prospered his journey or not. I mean, no wonder he gazed at her. It said in verse 16, she's very attractive. And number two, she's hospitable offering him a drink and she's abundantly generous. I don't know what size container she's using. At first I borrowed from the custodians, one of their Home depot buckets. That's like six gallons. And I thought six gallons of water is really heavy. So I, I opted for a smaller, but I don't, I don't know how big her jar was, but it takes a lot of water to satisfy a caravan of camels.

17And number four, is God answering the servant's prayer or what? That's why he's gazing at her in silence. Swift to observe. Slow to speak. Verse 22, when the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing half shekel and two bracelets for her arms, weighing 10 gold shekels about a quarter of a pound and said, please tell me whose daughter you are, whose daughter she is. This is no trivial sidebar. Remember the assignment. Get a wife from my kindred.

56Is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night? And she said to him, I'm the daughter of Beth Huel. That's Abraham's nephew, the son of Milah, which is lot's sister whom she bore to hor. This is the brother of Abraham who are both grandsons of another Hor 25. She added, we have plenty of both straw and fodder and room to spend the night. Now, what is the servant's reaction to Rebecca's generous hospitality? He prays. 26, the man bowed his head and worshiped the Lord. Do you see God at work in these details? Do you see God at work in camels and buckets? The servant does. God is at work in the details in this room right now.

54Noah would be entirely appropriate for the servant to thank Rebecca. He thanks God for he understands that the work of God is behind the service. Rebecca renders. And here comes the main point of the story, I think verse 27 and said, blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his steadfast love and his faithfulness toward my master. As for me, the Lord has led me in the way to the house of my master's kinsman. And then the young woman ran and told her mother's household about these things. And Rebecca had a brother whose name was Laben and Laben ran toward the man to the spring.

35There's a lot of running in this family. Young ladies, you want a brother who's worth his salt, who hurries because he wants to know, who's this guy putting a ring in my sister's nose? 30 as soon as he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister's arms and heard the words of Rebecca, his sister. Thus the man spoke to me, he went to the man and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring and he said, come in, oh, blessed of the Lord. Why do you stand outside for I've prepared the house and a place for your camels. So the man came to the house and unharnessed the camels and gave straw and fodder to the camels.

16And there was water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. And then food was set before him to eat. But he said, I will not eat until I have said what I have to say. And the response speak on 34. So he said, I'm Abraham's servant and the Lord has greatly blessed my master and he's become great and he's given him flocks and herds and silver and gold and male servants of which I am one. And female servants and camels and donkeys and Sarah. Now deceased saw that in the last chapter, my master's wife bore a son to my master when she was old. And to him, he's given all that he has.

00He's just cataloged all this wealth and now it's all given to his son. Now do you remember how back in chapter 15 I said, Eliezer was Abraham's soul heir error. If this servant is Eliezer, and I think he is, he recognizes that the inheritance that was once his is now going to another. And yet he proceeds with humble faithfulness, even enthusiasm. 37, my master made me swear he keeps calling Abraham his master, get ready for a change to occur here in a little bit. At this point, the servant repeats for Rebecca's family, all the instructions he was given by Abraham and how he prayed in the spring.

50And Rebecca appeared as an answer to that prayer. And I'm gonna skip several verses here, but can you imagine the emotions of Rebecca's family as he tells them these things, saying it's an answer to prayer? Skip to verse 45, and before I had finished speaking in my heart, God hears the silent prayers of our hearts. What a God behold, Rebecca came out with her water jar on her shoulder and she went down to the spring and drew water. And I said to her, please let me drink. And she quickly let down her char from her shoulder and said, drink, and I will give your camel's drink also. So I drank and she gave the camel's drink also.

34And then I asked her, whose daughter are you? And she said, the daughter of hors son who milk a bore to him. So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms, and then I bowed my head and worship the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to take the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son. So the Lord has led him. Imagine if your assignment was to, let's say, go to to New Mexico and find a bride for your boss's boy, what are the odds? Oh, and it has to be a relative 49. Now then if you're going to show, here's that theme, steadfast love and faithfulness to my master, tell me.

26And if not tell me that I may turn to the right hand or to the left. And then laben and Beel answered and said, well, the thing has come from the Lord. Well we cannot speak to you bad or good behold, Rebecca is before you take her and go and and let her be the wife of your master's son. As the Lord has spoken. Now we've seen before what the servant's reaction has been. How do you think he responds at this news if you're thinking he prays. You're right. 52, when Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the earth before the Lord. And the servant brought out jewelry of silver and of gold and garments and gave them to Rebecca.

12And they also gave to her brother, to her mother, costly ornaments. And he and the men who were with him ate and drank and they spent the night there. When they arose in the morning, he said, send me away to my master. But her brother, her brother and her mother said, well, uh uh, let the young woman remain with us a little while. At least 10 days after that she may go. But he said to them, do not delay me since the Lord has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master. Now, in verse 21, back earlier, the servant wondered if the Lord would prosper him on his mission. And here we can see that the servant has concluded that God has indeed prospered him 57.

54They said, well, let us call the young woman and ask her. And they called Rebecca and they said to her, will you go with this man? She said, I will go. I will go. Do you hear courage? Do you hear decisiveness? Faith, just as years earlier, Abraham had left her of the kaldi's to go to a land that he knew not of. Now Rebecca is going to leave less than 24 hours notice, leave her home country and go to another place by faith 59. So they sent away Rebecca, their sister and her nurse, and Abraham's servant and his men, and they blessed Rebecca. And they said to her, our sister, may you become thousands of 10 thousands, and may your offspring possess the gate of those who hate him.

55Now I just wanna pause there. That offspring will include Jesus and what gates? Well the gates of hell will not prevail against him. 61. Then Rebecca and her young women arose and rode on the camels and followed the man. And thus the servant took Rebecca and went his way. Now, can you imagine the conversations that these women had riding camels for 450 miles? They haven't met Isaac yet. I what do you think? He's like 62. Now Isaac had returned from Erla, Laja Roy and was dwelling in the Negev, and Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening. Why did he go out in the field to meditate?

51He's got a lot to think about. I mean, his dad took him up on a mountain and nearly killed him one time. And now his dad is sent off for, for a bride. He might be wondering about his dad's judgment. His dad is an old man. He might have full confidence in the promises of God. I don't know what he's meditating on, but he's thinking. And he lifted up his eyes and saw and behold there were camels coming, cue the music, if you know what I mean.

2964. And Rebecca lifted up her eyes and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel, said to the servant, who is that man walking in the field to meet us? And the servant said, it is my master. He's been referring to Abraham as his master. Now he calls Isaac his master. So she took her veil and covered herself 66. And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. And then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah, his mother, and took Rebecca and she became his wife and he loved her. Now that word for love, there can be translated like it can be translated flirted, it can be translated endeared.

19He endeared himself to her and endeared her to himself. Arranged marriages need not be loveless or without affection. And Rebecca's not perfect. I mean two chapters later she's gonna conspire to deceive this man she just married. But you can develop love for someone imperfect So Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. Now, earlier I said that this chapter was forward looking. And at this point in this story, do you foresee children, generations?

04None of the characters in this story in chapter 24 died for your sins. Not Abraham, not the servant, not Isaac, not Rebecca or anyone. At this point in the historical narrative, the the payment for your sin and mine remains to be made by Jesus who's been appointed to do it at a different time than the appointments. In this 24th chapter, Jesus, who will be crucified and eclipsed by a tombstone and then burst forth like an eclipsed sun from behind the moon.

44As we reach the end of this chapter, we can ask now, did the Lord number one, did the Lord show steadfast love and faithfulness? What's the answer? Oh, come on. And number two, did Isaac discover that God was not only faithful to Abraham, but to a new generation as well? Yes, The same God who is behind eclipses and Easter resurrections is the God who plans and carries out the remarkable details in today's text because of his steadfast love and faithfulness.

25This may seem like a long chapter to make that one point that God is faithful. Meanwhile, I suspect many of you have experienced what took long seasons of life before you could see what was at first unseeable, that God was being faithful to you after all his love was steadfast. Abraham had to wait a lot of years before seeing some of God's promise fulfilled. Isaac lived 40 years before Rebecca enters the scene in partial fulfillment of God's promise. Sarah doesn't even live to meet her daughter-in-law, but steadfast love, God is being faithful right on time, operating on his timing, not ours. Trust him, worship him as the servant in our text did repeatedly.
